Former Georgia LB re-enters the transfer portal

Former Georgia Bulldogs linebacker enters the transfer portal again after one season at UCF

Former Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Rian Davis has re-entered the NCAA transfer portal after spending the 2023 college football season at UCF.

Davis recorded 14 tackles for UCF in 2023 and likely has two years of eligibility remaining (only appeared in one game in 2021 and played during the 2020 season, which did not count against eligibility). Davis appeared in seven games for UCF during the Knights’ first season in the Big 12.

Rian Davis played in 14 of 15 games as Georgia won back-to-back national championships in 2022. Davis started in two games and contributed 15 total tackles.

Rian Davis, who is from Apopka, Florida, is a former four-star recruit. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker faced stout competition at the inside linebacker position during his time at Georgia.

Georgia does not have as much experienced depth at inside linebacker this year, but the Dawgs do have young talent in sophomore linebackers CJ Allen and Raylen Wilson. Georgia also returns senior Smael Mondon. Georgia inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann has a close relationship with Rian Davis and could look to target him in the portal if Georgia ends up looking for an experienced transfer linebacker this spring. 247Sports reported that Rian Davis entered the transfer portal.

Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Rian Davis helped the Dawgs win back-to-back national championships in 2022. Davis played in 14 of 15 games. He started in two games and contributed 15 total tackles.

Rian Davis, who is from Apopka, Florida, is transferring to the UCF Knights. Davis will be closed to home and should earn a starting role with UCF.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker is a former four-star recruit. He faced stout competition at the inside linebacker position during his time at Georgia. Ultimately, Smael Mondon and Jamon Dumas-Johnson primarily started at inside linebacker over players like Rian Davis and Trezmen Marshall. Marshall transferred to Alabama earlier this offseason.

Where does Georgia stand at inside linebacker after Rian Davis’ departure?

Xavian Sorey is likely the Bulldogs’ top back-up inside linebacker. Additionally, E.J. Lightsey, C.J. Allen, and Raylen Wilson all are talented pieces of depth, but none of them have the experience of a Rian Davis or Trezmen Marshall.

Rian Davis joins UCF for its first season in the Big 12. He should see the field a lot under head coach Gus Malzahn as the Knights adjust to playing in a Power Five football conference.

Georgia inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann and the Bulldogs will miss Rian Davis.

Georgia ILB enters transfer portal

UGA’s Rian Davis enters the transfer portal. Where Georgia stands at ILB here…

Georgia inside linebacker Rian Davis has entered his name into the transfer portal, allowing the former four-star prospect to be recruited by other programs.

The rising senior came to Athens out of Apokpa, Florida, rated as the No. 5 outside linebacker and the No. 89 player overall in the 2019 recruiting class, according to 247Sports.

Davis suffered a torn ACL in his senior season at Wekiva High School, which, along with other ailments, held him out of the 2019 season.

In 2020, Davis appeared in seven of 10 games after spending the start of the season hampered by injuries. After appearing in the second game of the 2021 season, Davis suffered a ruptured quadriceps that knocked him out for the rest of the Bulldogs’ championship year.

Davis saw the most action of his career in 2022, appearing in 14 of 15 games with two starts, totaling 15 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and five quarterback hurries

Davis is the second Georgia inside linebacker to enter the portal. Trezman Marshall transferred to Alabama during the first transfer portal window in January.

The Dawgs return both starting inside linebackers from the 2022 season, Jamon-Dumas Johnson and Smael Mondon Jr. The duo led the Bulldogs in tackles.

Rising redshirt sophomore Xavian Sorey Jr., a former four-star prospect, and rising redshirt freshman E.J. Lightsey, a former three-star prospect, both saw extensive action on the first-team defense during Saturday’s scrimmage.

Co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Glenn Schumann signed an impressive group in 2023, featuring three of the top-six linebackers in the country: Raylen Wilson, C.J. Allen and Troy Bowles.

Georgia Bulldogs spring practice injury report

A long list of injuries for Georgia this spring

Coming off of their first national title since 1980, the Georgia Bulldogs will be returning many of the key players from their 2021 championship team.

However, several stars and incoming recruits are expected to miss significant time during spring practice due to injury. While this does not mean that these players will not be ready come September 3 for Georgia’s opener against Oregon, their recoveries will be closely monitored as the season approaches.

Rian Davis, Linebacker (No. 0):

Class: Redshirt sophomore

Height: 6-2

Weight: 230 pounds

Hometown: Apopka, Florida

High School: Wekiva High School

Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Davis played in seven games during the 2020 college football season. He recorded one tackle and primarily contributed as a special teams player. Davis changed to jersey No. 0 from No. 12 this offseason.

The Wekiva High School star redshirted during his freshman year in 2019. He appeared in the home loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Davis came to Athens as a four-star recruit and a top 100 prospect. He tore his ACL as a senior in high school (four games in). Davis, an Orlando-area recruit, enrolled early at the University of Georgia and was healthy enough to participate in spring practice before his freshman season.

Davis will be a depth piece on Dan Lanning’s defense, which rotates a high number of defenders every season. Georgia has a stacked linebackers room once again.

The former four-star recruit will compete with returning linebackers Quay Walker, Nakobe Dean, Trezmen Marshall and Channing Tindall for playing time at the inside linebacker position.

Davis should be much more like himself this season. Most severe lower body injuries take two years to fully recover back to 100%. Davis will be a depth piece on Dan Lanning’s defense, which plays a high number of defenders every season. Don’t be shocked if Davis, now healthy, can crack the rotation for consistent playing time.

Davis has been training hard this off-season and looks strong:

Georgia fans must check out his incredible spin move from high school. You rarely see a spin move end up as a pancake:
