WrestleMania 39: 5 best non-Rhea, Sami or KO moments of night 1

Rhea Ripley, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens deserve all their props, but we picked 5 other moments we loved from WrestleMania night 1.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — It’s not all that often that any pro wrestling event, even WrestleMania, has two instant classic matches almost back to back. Night 1 of WrestleMania 39 was an exception.

In the penultimate scheduled match, Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair went back and forth in a physical, unforgiving and dramatic battle for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. It was the best match of Ripley’s career, one that made her a worthy new titleholder, and while Flair has had many big moments throughout her career, this was right up there with any of them.

That gave the main event much to live up to, but all four men involved in the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship pulled it off. Seeing Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens standing triumphant in the ring after ending The Usos’ record reign was a pitch perfect note on which to end Saturday night.

If you ask any member of the (announced) crowd of more than 80,000 at SoFi Stadium to pick their favorite moment of the night, it’s almost certain to be from one of those two matches. That’s understandable since both were so spectacular.

But the matches that came before them all had great bits of entertainment. Here were five of the best that don’t involve Ripley, Zayn or Owens.

WrestleMania 39 results: Rey Mysterio gets aid from LWO, Bad Bunny to beat Dominik Mysterio

Who prevailed in a battle of father vs. son at WrestleMania 39? Get Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio results and details here.

Dominik Mysterio‘s entrance includes lots of prison imagery, and he’s in handcuffs being led to the ring from a police van by fake police officers. He also briefly wears one of his father’s masks, enraging Michael Cole on commentary.

Not to be outdone, Rey Mysterio is driven to the ring by Snoop Dogg in a low rider, with Eddie Guerrero’s entrance them eventually making way to Rey’s own. This match is also sponsored by Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Dom shoves his father away and flexes, then takes Rey down to the mat. Rey flips his son between the ropes to the floor, and this time he’s not getting pushed without retaliation. Rey snaps off a hurricanrana, and Dom begs off as the crowd cheers.

After whipping Dominik into the second turnbuckle, Rey takes off his belt and starts lashing his son. When Dominik throws a drink on his sister, Rey comes over and walks into an ambush, getting smashed into the ringpost as well.

A springboard senton earns Dominik a near fall, so he stays on the attack and drops his dad in a corner. Dom locks in an abdominal stretch, and he looks in complete control, to the dismay of the fans at SoFi Stadium.

Delighting in beating up his father in front of his mother, Dominik finally goes too far and gets a slap from Angie, who then offers Rey a kiss as he has recovered. A cross body back in the ring gets Rey a two count.

A flipping piledriver out of the corner is good for another near fall for Rey. There’s Damian Priest, right on cue, and Finn Balor as well, coming out of the crowd. Rey takes a huge shot but is able to kick out at two.

The booing picks up as Dom tries for Three Amigos, but Rey counters and hits a 619. He heads up top but Priest and Balor interfere, and Dom is able to knock his father down to the canvas.

Both Mysterios end up out on the floor, but help is finally on the way for Rey in the form of Legado Del Fantasma, or the LWO.

Their arrival has Rey and Dom ready to settle things among themselves, with Dominik hitting his dad with his own 619. A frog splash finds the target but Rey kicks out at two.

Undeterred, Dominik exposes a steel turnbuckle and gets out a steel chain … but is stopped by Bad Bunny. That gives Rey a chance to hit a 619 and a frog splash, and true to his word, he has taken care of business.

WrestleMania 39 results, night 1: KO, Sami climb the mountain, Rhea Ripley gets her moment

Full WWE WrestleMania 39 results from Los Angeles, including John Cena vs. Austin Theory, and Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn vs. The Usos.

The wait is over. WrestleMania 39 is ready to descend on SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and it promises to be not just the biggest WWE event of 2023, but truly one of its biggest of all time.

As with the past few years, WrestleMania will once again be spread over two nights, which means a pair of main events. The intrigue on night 1 is which match will occupy that coveted spot. John Cena vs. Austin Theory has been announced as the headliner, but will kick off the show instead of going on last.

That’s led many to look toward the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship bout between titleholder Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley as the potential closer. The much anticipated Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship match featuring Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn trying to topple The Usos is another real possibility.

Even the non-title matches on night 1 have some real emotional resonance. Seth Rollins has made it clear how much he dislikes Logan Paul — and many members of the WWE Universe seem to agree — but the Maverick has been able to one-up him several times to date. And the most personal of grudge matches will see father battle son as newly minted WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio looks to “take care of business” against Dominik Mysterio.

There’s also a six-woman tag team match packed with both enmity and star power with Becky Lynch, Lita and Trish Stratus on one side and Damage CTRL on the other. It’s a potential show stealer to be sure.

The action all begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. local time in Los Angeles on Saturday night. If you’re not able to tune in on Peacock in the U.S. or WWE Network internationally, think of this post as your hub for the evening, as we’ll post links to results posts for each match as they become final.

WrestleMania night 1 card: Every match set for April 1

We know John Cena vs. Austin Theory will kick off WrestleMania night 1, but which match will close it?

WrestleMania 39 is almost upon us — the first half of it, anyway.

WrestleMania night 1 on Saturday, April 1 will be headlined by a battle of legend vs. rising star, as John Cena takes on Austin Theory for the WWE United States Championship. However, that match will kick off the show, so the main event on the first night is still a bit of a question mark.

A leading candidate to close Saturday night is the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship match between Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley. Another possibility is one of the emotional highlights of the entire two-day event, with Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens reuniting to try to end the record-setting run of Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos.

It’s possible that night 1 could run longer than night 2, with seven matches compared to six, though there are several bouts slated for Sunday that could be lengthy. Here’s a look at the entire WrestleMania night 1 card, and if you’re looking for what we think will happen, please check out our full WrestleMania predictions for both nights.

WrestleMania 39: Start time, matches, predictions, how to watch

WrestleMania 39 is less than a week away, and we get you set to watch all of the action in Los Angeles.

For pro wrestling fans, there’s no better time of year than WrestleMania. Even people who wouldn’t call WWE their favorite variety of the art form get excited for the company’s biggest show of the year, descending on whatever city is hosting.

In this case of WrestleMania 39, it’s Los Angeles, where SoFi Stadium will play host to two nights of the best WWE has to offer. Historically, that’s often meant a number of older stars who may only wrestle once or twice a year.

Not so much this time, where with the exception of John Cena (and yes, including him in that category makes you wonder where time has gone) and a couple of all-time women’s division greats, the focus is very much on the talent and stories WWE has around on a regular basis.

The headlining attraction will see Cody Rhodes attempt to knock Roman Reigns off his perch atop WWE. The emotional high point of the event may come when Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens take on The Usos for their tag team titles in the culmination of one of wrestling’s grandest longform narratives. And there are plenty of other title bouts and matches with compelling hooks up and down the card.

Will that be enough to make it feel special if WWE plays it pretty straightforward throughout? The guess is that the answer will be yes, as the venue and crowd will ensure the event feels larger than life. Here’s a rundown on everything you need to know as WrestleMania Goes Hollywood.

WWE WrestleMania 39

  • Start time: 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT both nights

WWE Raw results: Cody Rhodes is ready for WrestleMania

WWE Raw results for March 27, 2023 from Phoenix, where Cody Rhodes took on Solo Sikoa in the main event.

Can you feel that? It’s WrestleMania 39, coming up quickly now. The final WWE Raw prior to the Show of Shows is tonight in Phoenix, and while it’s probably not wise to expect anything Earth-shaking, there are still some big things happening.

We mean that literally, too. Brock Lesnar and Omos will collide in Los Angeles, providing fans with the rare site of Lesnar being the smaller man in a fight. The WWE Universe will find out how much smaller on Raw, as the two titans will have a pre-WrestleMania weigh-in. And yes, that’s not usually a thing in pro wrestling, but you can’t deny it’s somewhat fascinating in this context.

Want big matches instead? This show will have one of those for sure. Cody Rhodes is less than a week away from his chance to “finish the story,” but he’s got a big test in the form of Solo Sikoa. Will Cody’s attempt to get inside Solo’s head the past few weeks pay off, or will the street champ be able to soften up the American Nightmare to make things easier for the Tribal Chief?

The Miz has certainly been letting us know whenever possible what a big deal it is to be the host of WrestleMania 39, and he’s going to head into Hollywood with one final episode of Miz TV. His guests will be none other than a trio of legendary women’s division champs, and you can probably guess who we mean: Becky Lynch, Lita and Trish Stratus.

WWE Raw results in 90 seconds:

  • Miz TV welcomes three legends, yet Damage CTRL isn’t going to let them go without a confrontation
  • Becky Lynch def. IYO SKY by pinfall
  • A video package plays up the accomplishments of Asuka and looks ahead to her WrestleMania challenge of Bianca Belair
  • We see Logan Paul boasting last Monday before Seth Rollins is interviewed backstage, and he’s not crazy about Mustafa Ali trying to put his positive spin on things, which leads to them facing each other tonight
  • Seth Rollins def. Mustafa Ali by pinfall, then cuts a promo on Paul
  • Baron Corbin complains to Adam Pearce, who has to break away to deal with Chelsea Green, who finally gets into the WrestleMania Showcase match with a partner who is equally disgruntled with AP: Sonya Deville
  • Omos and Brock Lesnar hit the scales … well, one of them does, anyway
  • A video package is shown for Charlotte Flair before Rhea Ripley says Charlotte’s unmatched legacy will not define her destiny — and she needs Charlotte’s championship for that
  • Finn Balor warns Edge there’s nothing more dangerous than a caged demon
  • Street Profits, Braun Strowman and Ricochet def. Alpha Academy and Viking Raiders by pinfall
  • Cody Rhodes is asked if he put himself in a vulnerable position by taking this match against Solo Sikoa, and he insists that he will make Solo realize he’s not ready before going on to beat Roman Reigns this weekend
  • A video package is shown to promote Bianca Belair
  • Austin Theory cuts a promo in an empty arena to prove he doesn’t do it for the fans, he does it for himself, and he’s going to make the fans stop believing in John Cena this Saturday at WrestleMania
  • Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green def. Michin and Candice LeRae by pinfall in a WrestleMania Showcase qualifying match
  • Heyman says flat out that Solo isn’t there to compete, but to ensure Cody isn’t at 100% come Sunday
  • Rey Mysterio def. Damian Priest by DQ thanks to interference by Dominik Mysterio, and Legado Del Fantasma has to save Rey fafter a short post-match beating
  • The contestants for the Andre the Giant Battle Royal are posted on the wall, and Rick Boogs is really excited to be in it while Elias is less thrilled after seeing some of the others who are too
  • Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens talk about how their match against The Usos is extra special because L.A. is where they got their first big break
  • Gunther def. Dolph Ziggler by pinfall
  • Cody Rhodes def. Solo Sikoa by pinfall

WrestleMania 39 guide for lapsed WWE fans: Everything you need to know for WrestleMania Goes Hollywood

Been away from WWE for a while? We get you ready for WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles in just a few minutes.

If you don’t watch WWE regularly but are going to check out one event a year, WrestleMania is it. Not only is it the culmination of everything the company does for one whole trip around the sun, it’s also a spectacle the likes of which no other pro wrestling event can match.

We’re talking sold out crowds in huge stadiums, which is the case again this year. WrestleMania 39, also known as WrestleMania Goes Hollywood, will take place April 1-2 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. It will once again be a huge deal, likely setting multiple WWE records for revenue and ticket sales, though probably not attendance.

There’s always the chance for extra attention for the wider world of entertainment at WrestleMania as well, though the talent involved in this year’s show is almost all from the roster of men and women who perform on WWE TV every week. One notable exception comes to mind, and we’ll get to him in a bit.

So if you haven’t watched WWE in a while, or even years, no worries. We’re going to get you up to speed with a quick summary of everything you need to know to watch on Peacock (or WWE Network if you’re outside the U.S.) without feeling lost.

WWE SmackDown results: Dominik pushes Rey past the breaking point, The Usos spoil the WrestleZaynia reveal

WWE SmackDown results from Vegas, as Dominik Mysterio finally pushed his father too far, and The Usos reminded KO and Sami they’re the 1’s.

The most mentally exhausting WWE storyline may finally come to a head tonight on WWE SmackDown from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

That’s not to say that there hasn’t been entertaining father-son drama between Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio. The former has been appropriately tortured as a man who doesn’t want to lay his hands on his own child, no matter how far they’ve gone to the dark side, while the latter has definitely grown as a performer since linking up with The Judgment Day.

But man, is it taking forever to play out, with Dominik essentially repeating himself over and over in his promos about how Rey was never there for him growing up.

Yes, we get it.

With Rey so dug in about refusing to fight Dom even after a challenge was made for WrestleMania, that’s led many to wonder what the straw will be that finally breaks the proverbial camel’s back. Lo and behold, WWE says the entire Mysterio family, including Rey’s mother, will be in Las Vegas.

This is the best chance yet for their inevitable WrestleMania match to be made official, and to that we can only say this: Thank you, because it’s about time.

Speaking of Rey, he’ll be in action in Vegas, taking on LA Knight. Those two have had a few run-ins as of late, and Rey will undoubtedly have other things on his mind, so … maybe Knight will actually be allowed to win?

In contrast, Cody Rhodes knows exactly what he’ll be doing at WrestleMania. But he’s been staying busy leading up to the biggest show of them all, as he will tonight when he faces Ludwig Kaiser.

WWE SmackDown results in 60 seconds:

  • Cody Rhodes def. Ludwig Kaiser by pinfall …
  • … but is told by Paul Heyman after the match that he’ll be facing Solo Sikoa next week on Raw and seeing Roman Reigns one more time next week on SmackDown
  • Charlotte Flair explains exactly how she’s overcome fear, insecurity and charges of nepotism throughout her championship-studded career
  • LA Knight def. Rey Mysterio by pinfall thanks to interference from Dominik Mysterio …
  • … and after Dominik menaces his own mom, Rey finally hits him and agrees to a match at WrestleMania
  • Natalya and Shotzi def. Xia Li and Lacey Evans by submission in a WrestleMania Showcase qualifying match, one that Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler announce they’ve already been added to
  • Drew McIntyre, Sheamus and Gunther are all unhappy for different reasons but end up signing the contract to meet at WrestleMania, but Butch gets a little overexcited, leading to …
  • Gunther def. Butch by pinfall, then gets smashed by a Claymore from McIntyre
  • The Street Profits and Braun Strowman and Ricochet exchange pleasantries ahead of WrestleMania
  • Sami Zayn is the guest on The KO Show, where he learns about WrestleZaynia before getting laid out by The Usos

WWE Hall of Fame 2023: Inductees, date, time, how to watch

Everything you need to know about the WWE Hall of Fame 2023 before the new class is inducted in L.A.

WWE waited longer than usual to start announcing WWE Hall of Fame inductees this year, leading some to question whether the ceremony was even happening at all.

Never fear, however, as the Class of 2023 is very real, just a bit smaller than usual. That appears to be by design, as the induction ceremony will also not be a standalone event like it has been in some previous years.

Instead, the honorees will get their time in the spotlight right after SmackDown the night before WrestleMania 39 begins in earnest in Los Angeles. Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s ceremony.

WWE Hall of Fame 2023

  • Date: Friday, March 31, 2023
  • Location: Crypto.com Arena
  • Start time: 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT
  • How to watch: Live on Peacock in the United States or on WWE Network in the rest of the world

Note that this is a not a separate event for live attendees, so fans with tickets to SmackDown the night of March 31 will also get to see the Hall of Fame ceremony.

WWE Hall of Fame 2023 inductees

(Last update: March 30, 2023, 7:45 p.m. ET)

  • Rey Mysterio – Widely considered the most famous luchador of all time, Mysterio is a three-rime world champion, WWE Triple Crown and Grand Slam champion, and won the 2006 Royal Rumble. He performed in ECW, AAA, CMLL, NJPW and WCW as well, and likely has the most recognizable wrestling mask ever. He will reportedly be inducted by Konnan, his long-time friend and former tag team partner in multiple promotions.
  • The Great Muta – Whether under the Muta name of his real name of Keiji Muto, he influenced wrestlers all over the world during a career spanning nearly four decades — and one that just ended earlier this year. One of just a handful of wrestlers to win the top titles in all three of Japan’s biggest promotions, Muta is credited with inventing or popularizing many maneuvers that are commonplace in the ring today. Interestingly, he never wrestled a WWE match, and admitted to being surprised by this honor. Nevertheless, he will be inducted by fellow icon Ric Flair.
  • Andy Kaufman – WWE almost always includes a non-wrestler in each Hall of Fame class, and Kaufman straddled that line more than most. The offbeat comedian displayed an understanding of pro wrestling that was ahead of his time during a feud with Jerry “The King” Lawler that extended to TV and fooled many into thinking it was real. Kaufman passed away young in the 1980s and many believe this recognition is long overdue. He will be inducted by Lawler, though it’s unclear if The King will be in L.A. in person as he continues to recover from a stroke suffered earlier this year.
  • Stacy Keibler – A familiar face to anyone who was around for the last days of the WWE Attitude Era, Keibler first made her name in WCW — originally as a Nitro Girl, then as a manager and wrestler. She migrated to WWE during the Invasion storyline and became a fixture in the early 2000s, competing with and against the likes of Trish Stratus, Lita and Torrie Wilson. Keibler left WWE after finding crossover fame as an early contestant on “Dancing with the Stars,” but has returned periodically since then. She inducted Wilson into the Hall of Fame several years ago and will join her friend in Los Angeles.
  • Tim White – Originally getting his exposure to pro wrestling as the agent for Andre the Giant, White became a referee in 1993 and went on to a long career with numerous highlights. White was the third man in the ring, or rather, cage, for the famous 1998 Hell in a Cell match between The Undertaker and Mankind. Injuries forced his retirement from active in-ring work in 2004, but he remained with WWE in different capacities until 2009. White passed away last summer but will join Kaufman as a posthumous inductee and was also named this year’s Warrior Award recipient.
