Eagles sign former Saints WR Shaquan Davis to reserve/future deal

The Eagles signed former Saints wide receiver Shaquan Davis, a fan favorite from the 2023 preseason:

The Philadelphia Eagles signed former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Shaquan Davis to a reserve/future contract on Thursday, the team announced. Davis signed with the Saints last year as an undrafted rookie out of South Carolina State, having received more guarantees than many other first-year pros around the league.

Davis spent his rookie year on the practice squad and was sidelined by an injury at one point, but returned to health and was active in practice by the end of the season. But he never got into a game. It was a disappointing showing after he quickly became a fan favorite during the 2023 preseason.

It’s never good for an older team to lose young talent, though you have to wonder how much of this was Davis’ decision. It’s just as possible the Saints chose to let him go. With wide receivers coach Kodi Burns being shown the door, Davis would’ve returned to a very different situation in 2024 than what he experienced in 2023.

The Saints will need to start signing receivers at some point just to fill out the roster. They have only three under contract for 2024: Chris Olave, A.T. Perry and Michael Thomas, whose contract effectively contains a poison pill that will require him to be extended or released in March. Rashid Shaheed will be back as an exclusive rights free agent, but the Saints need to add more players here — fast.

Steelers sign former Saints wide receiver Marquez Callaway

The Steelers signed former Saints wide receiver Marquez Callaway to a reserve/future deal:

There’s one member of the 2023 New Orleans Saints playing elsewhere in 2024. The Pittsburgh STeelers announced that they signed wide receiver Marquez Callaway to a reserve/future deal; Callaway was one of three players on the Saints practice squad who were not brought back after the season ended.

Callaway, 25, totaled just 28 snaps on offense in three games this year without drawing a single target. He impressed with 46 receptions for 698 yards and 6 touchdown catches for the Saints back in 2021 but has not returned to those heights. He followed Sean Payton to the Denver Broncos last year but couldn’t make the team.

Now he’ll be trying his hand in Pittsburgh. As for the Saints, they have just three receivers under contract for 2024 in Chris Olave, A.T. Perry, and Michael Thomas, who is likely to be released in a procedural move in March. All-Pro returns specialist Rashid Shaheed is an exclusive rights free agent and is expected to return on a minimum salary, not being eligible for a real extension until 2025. Lynn Bowden Jr. (restricted) and Keith Kirkwood are also Saints free agent receivers of note.

Packers sign 3 linebackers to 2024 reserve/future contracts

The Green Bay Packers began building out the 2024 offseason 90-man roster on Tuesday, signing linebackers Deslin Alexandre, Deandre Johnson and Christian Young to reserve/future contracts.

The Green Bay Packers began building out the 2024 offseason 90-man roster on Tuesday, signing linebackers Deslin Alexandre, Deandre Johnson and Christian Young to reserve/future contracts.

Alexandre and Johnson are both edge rushers. Young is an off-ball linebacker.

Reserve/future contracts are placeholder deals until the start of the new league year in March and provide the player with a spot on the 90-man offseason roster. They are not eligible to play for the Packers this season.

Alexandre went undrafted out of Pitt in 2023. He spent time with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears during his first NFL season. At Pitt, Alexandre produced 16.5 sacks and 29.5 tackles for loss over 58 games.

Johnson went undrafted out of Miami in 2022. He spent time with the Dolphins as a first-year player before playing in the XFL in 2023. Over five collegiate seasons, Johnson produced 14.5 sacks and six forced fumbles.

Young previously spent time on the Packers practice squad this season but was released in November. A college safety at Arizona, Young transitioned to linebacker. He also spent time with the Seattle Seahawks in 2023.

When the Packers season ends, the team can start signing current practice squad players to reserve/future contracts.

Chiefs sign 12 practice squad players on reserve/future contracts

The #Chiefs have signed 12 of their practice squad players to reserve/future contracts for the 2023 NFL season.

The Kansas City Chiefs front office has brought back a dozen practice squad players from the 2022 NFL season on reserve/future contracts.

If you’re unfamiliar with reserve/future contracts, these players won’t officially rejoin the team until the new league year begins in March. That’s when teams are permitted to expand roster size to 90 for the upcoming off-season. These are the players who will help fill out the off-season roster and compete for a role during the 2023 NFL off-season.

The practice squad players who are left unsigned are S Ugo Amadi, S Zayne Anderson, RB Melvin Gordon, TE Jordan Franks (injured), WR Marcus Kemp and DT Phil Hoskins. It’s possible all of those players could be re-signed at a later date.

Below you’ll find outlooks for each of the players signed to reserve/future deals:

Chiefs sign C Austin Reiter on reserve/future contract, per report

The #Chiefs have begun to sign practice squad players on reserve/future contracts, beginning with veteran C Austin Reiter per report.

With Super Bowl LVII in the rearview, the Kansas City Chiefs front office has turned its attention to constructing the 90-man offseason roster.

As practice squad contracts expire for Kansas City, the team will look to retain many of those players on reserve/future contracts. According to NFL reporter Ari Meirov, the Chiefs have signed veteran C Austin Reiter on a reserve/future deal.

Reiter is a two-time Super Bowl winner with Kansas City, having started 38 games for the Chiefs from 2018-2020. He was the team’s starting center in both Super Bowl LIV and Super Bowl LV. This past year, he spent most of the season on the team’s practice squad.

Reiter was elevated from the practice squad during the AFC divisional round and during Super Bowl LVII, but he wasn’t made active for either game.

If you’re unfamiliar with reserve/future contracts, Reiter won’t officially rejoin the team until the new league year begins in March. That’s when teams are permitted to expand roster size to 90 players for the 2023 NFL offseason. That said, he’s still going to be part of the Super Bowl LVII festivities along with his practice squad teammates.

Reiter joins former Bengals first-round draft pick John Rossformer Indiana WR Ty Fryfogle and DL Daniel Wise as the players who have signed reserve/future contracts with Kansas City.

Saints sign a new kicker among four reserve/future deals

The Saints signed new kicker Alex Quevedo among four reserve/future deals while bringing back practice squad wide receiver Kawaan Baker:

The New Orleans Saints filed a couple of roster moves on Thursday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire, reporting four new reserve/future signings. These are low-cost additions to the offseason roster largely made up of players who were on practice squads around the league at the end of the 2022 season.

And there are a few familiar names on the list of new arrivals. Wide receiver Kawaan Baker is returning from the Saints practice squad, and they’ve brought back second-year kicker Alex Quevedo for another tryout after giving him a look last summer. Here’s what you need to know about the newest members of the black and gold:

Koda Martin signs reserve/future contract with the Saints

Former Cardinals and Syracuse right guard Koda Martin signed a reserve/future contract with the Saints, adding him to their offseason roster:

Here’s another reserve/future contract signing for the New Orleans Saints. The Saints announced Wednesday that offensive lineman Koda Martin signed with them to join their 90-man offseason roster, bringing more depth up front. That’s key for a unit facing more upheaval during the 2023 offseason with starters like left guard Andrus Peat looking like a potential salary cap casualty.

Martin, 29, hasn’t seen many reps in the NFL since signing with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent back in 2019, though he played a handful of snaps on the field goal units and at right guard for the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. He finished his collegiate career at Syracuse, where he started all 13 games at right tackle as a senior in 2018; that’s after transferring from Texas A&M, where he started at left tackle as a junior.

So he has experience lining up on each side of the line and he’s moved inside as a pro. That could help his case for a roster spot over the summer, though he’ll be competing with other players like second-year backup Lewis Kidd for snaps in practice. The more competition, the better off this Saints team will be.

Saints re-sign half their practice squad for 2023, but not one of their 2022 draft picks

The Saints re-signed half of their practice squad for 2023, but the list of returning players doesn’t include one of their 2022 draft picks:

Here’s a bit of housekeeping from the New Orleans Saints. Practice squad contracts expire at the end of the regular season for teams that don’t qualify for the playoffs, though they have the option to bring those players back on reserve/future deals — and the Saints have already taken advantage of that opportunity.

New Orleans re-signed half of their practice squad for 2023, but the list of returning players doesn’t include one of their 2022 draft picks: defensive tackle Jordan Jackson, selected in the sixth round out of the Air Force Academy. Jackson spent his rookie year on the practice squad and never got into a game, but that’s not to say he won’t be re-signed. These reserve/future contracts are typically handled in batches so he could be part of the next wave of signings. It’s something to watch out for.

In the meantime, here are the eight practice squad players who have already been re-signed:

Chiefs to sign former Indiana WR Ty Fryfogle on reserve/future contract

The #Chiefs are reported to have made their first reserve/future signing after hosting WR Ty Fryfogle on a successful tryout on Monday.

We have the first official report of the Kansas City Chiefs signing a player to a reserve/future contract for the 2023 NFL season.

According to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo, the Chiefs are signing former Indiana WR Ty Fryfogle to a reserve/future deal. Fryfogle signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2022, but he was waived with an undisclosed injury back in August. He landed on injured reserve before coming to terms with the Cowboys on an injury settlement.

Fryfogle was among the several players the team hosted for tryouts on Monday, including former Alabama WR Slade Bolden and BC Lions QB Nathan Rourke.

In his five-year career with the Hoosiers, the 6-1 and 206-pound receiver appeared in 45 games. Fryfogle recorded 158 catches for over, 2,200 yards, and 14 touchdowns during that span.

If you’re unfamiliar with reserve/future contracts, here is an explanation from our primer:

Players signed on (reserve/future) deals won’t count toward the team’s current active roster while they play in the postseason this year. When the 90-man offseason roster opens up at the beginning of the new league year in March, players signed to reserve/future contracts will officially be considered members of the team.

Expect more reserve/future signings from the Chiefs in the coming days now that they’re permitted.

Chiefs can now sign free agents to reserve/future contracts for 2023

The #Chiefs can add current free agents on reserve/future contracts for the 2023 NFL season beginning on Monday, Jan. 9.

The Kansas City Chiefs can begin adding unrestricted free agents on reserve/future deals beginning today.

On Monday, Jan. 9, the NFL permits teams to sign current free agents on reserve/future contracts for the 2023 NFL season. Players signed on these types of deals won’t count toward the team’s current active roster while they play in the postseason this year. When the 90-man offseason roster opens up at the beginning of the new league year in March, players signed to reserve/future contracts will officially be considered members of the team.

Expect that Kansas City will make moves to add recently-released practice squad players like Justin Hilliard and Bryan Edwards on reserve/future contracts. They could also scour the league and find some players whose practice squad contracts with their teams expired following the conclusion of the 2022 NFL regular season. Last season, the team signed a former CFL defensive back on a reserve/future contract. There are quite a few possibilities for Brett Veach and his staff to explore.

Two players who are on the Chiefs’ active roster this season — WR Justin Watson and LB Darius Harris — were reserve/future signings last season. Others include TE Matt Bushman (practice squad) and TE Jordan Franks (practice squad-injured).
