Commanders signed former Chiefs RB Derrick Gore on Monday

Eric Bieniemy added another former #Chiefs standout to the #Commanders roster on Monday when Washington signed running back Derrick Gore.

Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy added a familiar face to the Washington Commanders roster on Monday by signing talented running back Derrick Gore.

Gore, who was a free agent heading into training camp, was a member of Bieniemy’s offense in 2021 and a member of the Chiefs’ roster that season.

Bieniemy is looking to emulate Kansas City’s strategy for success in Washington in his first year as an NFL head coach and has added several former Chiefs to the team’s 90-man roster to compete for spots as the Commanders restructure their depth chart ahead of the 2023 season.

Gore joins former teammates Byron Pringle, Marcus Kemp, and Andrew Wylie in the Commanders’ offense, which should look drastically different with Bieniemy calling the shots.

Watch for Washington to take every page they can out of Andy Reid’s playbook over the course of the coming months as the Commanders look to rejuvenate their recently-sold franchise and return to relevance over the course of the next several years.

Commanders sign running back Derrick Gore

Gore adds more depth to the offensive backfield for the remainder of camp.

The Washington Commanders again have 90 players on their training camp roster.

On Monday, Washington announced it had signed veteran running back Derrick Gore.

Gore, 28, first entered the NFL back in 2019 as an undrafted free agent from Louisiana Monroe. Before his time at ULM, Gore played two seasons at Alabama, where he was teammates with Washington defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.

Gore initially signed with the Los Angeles Chargers but was waived during final cuts. He actually signed with Washington’s practice squad in Dec. 2019 but never spent any time on the 53-man roster. In May 2020, he re-signed with the Chargers. He was waived again and re-signed to the practice squad.

In 2021, Gore signed with the Kansas City Chief, where he played under current Washington offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. He received his first NFL action that season, appearing in 11 games, carrying the ball football 51 times for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

The Chiefs waived Gore in August 2022. He signed with the New Orleans Saints practice squad later that year.

Washington has some depth in the backfield with Brian Robinson Jr., Antonio Gibson, Chris Rodriguez Jr., Jaret Patterson and Jonathan Williams. So Gore figures to add more depth through the remainder of training camp as we don’t have any reports of injuries to any of the team’s running backs.

Saints release two former practice squad players in post-draft roster moves

The New Orleans Saints released two of their former practice squad players, RB Derrick Gore and QB Jake Luton, amid post-draft roster moves:

The New Orleans Saints released two of their former practice squad players amid a wave of post-NFL draft roster moves, having already brought in upgrades at their position groups. Mid-round draft picks and undrafted free agent pickups at running back and quarterback made some players expendable.

It’s a tough part of the business, but these things happen. The good news is  that running back Derrick Gore and quarterback Jake Luton will both have an opportunity to try out for other teams at upcoming rookie minicamps around the league. Spring leagues like the USFL and XFL are also options, as is the Canadian league. First they’ll test waivers after being listed on Tuesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire.

Gore, 28, signed with the Saints practice squad last season after bouncing around the league on a couple of different teams, most recently the Kansas City Chiefs. He played college ball at Alabama and Louisiana-Monroe where he led the Warhawks in rushing in both 2017 and 2018.

Luton, 27, also signed with the Saints practice squad last season in the wake of Jameis Winston’s injuries, though he was rarely active on gameday. Like Gore, he signed a reserve/future deal to stay with New Orleans in January. He played collegiately at Idaho and Oregon State with his most prominent pro experience coming with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Good luck to both young men in their next opportunities. These departures, taken with the signing of Montana returns ace Malik Flowers, put the Saints at about 85 players against the 90-man offseason roster limit.

Saints re-sign half their practice squad for 2023, but not one of their 2022 draft picks

The Saints re-signed half of their practice squad for 2023, but the list of returning players doesn’t include one of their 2022 draft picks:

Here’s a bit of housekeeping from the New Orleans Saints. Practice squad contracts expire at the end of the regular season for teams that don’t qualify for the playoffs, though they have the option to bring those players back on reserve/future deals — and the Saints have already taken advantage of that opportunity.

New Orleans re-signed half of their practice squad for 2023, but the list of returning players doesn’t include one of their 2022 draft picks: defensive tackle Jordan Jackson, selected in the sixth round out of the Air Force Academy. Jackson spent his rookie year on the practice squad and never got into a game, but that’s not to say he won’t be re-signed. These reserve/future contracts are typically handled in batches so he could be part of the next wave of signings. It’s something to watch out for.

In the meantime, here are the eight practice squad players who have already been re-signed:

Saints release both of their practice squad running backs

The Saints released each of their practice squad running backs on Tuesday, parting ways with both Jordan Howard and Derrick Gore:

Well that’s something. The New Orleans Saints released both of their practice squad running backs on Tuesday, parting ways with Jordan Howard and Derrick Gore, which comes as a bit of a surprise given how much effort the team put into restocking the depth chart at this position.

They’ve cycled through running backs including Latavius Murray, Tony Jones Jr., and James Funk, each of whom are currently on other rosters around the league. The Saints just managed 29 rushing yards in their Week 10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, their lowest single-game total since a loss to the Baltimore Ravens back on Dec. 19, 2010. Their running game hasn’t exactly been reliable this season.

But it may suggest good news is coming for Mark Ingram II, who has been sidelined in recent weeks with a knee injury. Howard has been elevated for each of the last two games while Ingram was on the mend, though he logged just a handful of snaps on offense (gaining a single yard on his lone rushing attempt). Gore had not gotten into a game prior to his release.

This leaves Ingram, Alvin Kamara, and Dwayne Washington as the only running backs currently under contract, though the Saints do have a pair of fullbacks on the 53-man roster in J.P. Holtz (active for six games this season) and Adam Prentice (active for the first time since Week 3 last Sunday). Maybe more additions are coming, or the Saints are simply comfortable working with who they have. We’ll keep an eye out for movement.

Former Alabama walk-on RB Derrick Gore signing with Saints’ practice squad

Former Alabama running back Derrick Gore was signed to the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad on Tuesday.

Former Alabama walk-on running back Derrick Gore signed with the New Orleans Saints practice squad on Tuesday. He last played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021.

Gore spent two seasons at Alabama as a walk-on running back. In his time at Alabama, he rushed for 93 yards and one touchdown. He also contributed on the Tide’s special teams unit. Soon after his redshirt-sophomore season, he decided to transfer to Louisiana-Monroe.

He went on to be the Warhawks’ leading rusher in his final two seasons. In 2019, he would sign with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. He also spent time with the Washington and Kansas City. In his NFL career, he has 51 carries for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

Now, the New York native will have the opportunity to earn himself a spot on the Saints’ active roster. He will be returning from a pre-season injury that caused him to be placed on the Chiefs’ injured reserve.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Gore’s professional career as well as other former Alabama players.

Saints sign former ULM running back Derrick Gore after free agent tryouts

Saints sign former ULM running back Derrick Gore after free agent tryouts

There’s a new name on the New Orleans Saints depth chart at running back. Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson first reported that the team signed Derrick Gore after trying out a group of free agents, which was confirmed by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Gore, 27, logged 51 carries to gain 256 rushing yards with 8 receptions and another 105 receiving yards last year for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Gore might be familiar to some Saints fans as an alum out of the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks program, having begun his college career at Alabama. He led ULM in rushing in each of his two seasons as their starting running back, and that helped get him on the NFL’s radar — though New Orleans is his fourth team after turning pro in 2019.

Now, whether Gore signed with the Saints practice squad first or is going directly to their 53-man roster is unclear, though it’s more likely he’ll join Jordan Howard on the practice squad. New Orleans has some openings on each list so they could choose to take it differently. We’ll see. At any rate, Gore joins a depth chart featuring Alvin Kamara, Mark Ingram II, and Dwayne Washington on the active roster with Howard on the practice squad.

Saints host several free agent running backs on Tuesday

The Saints hosted several free agent running backs on Tuesday after parting ways with practice squad runner Jake Funk, in light of an injury to Mark Ingram II:

We can’t say the the New Orleans Saints aren’t looking for help. The team hosted several free agent running backs for a group tryout on Tuesday after parting ways with practice squad runner Jake Funk, and in light of an injury to Mark Ingram II — Jordan Howard was called up from the practice squad to back up Alvin Kamara and Dwayne Washington in Monday night’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but they could use more depth at the position. At least they’re trying after choosing to stand pat at the trade deadline last week.

Chiefs waive RB Derrick Gore from IR with injury settlement

The #Chiefs have waived RB Derrick Gore from injured reserve with an injury settlement. If he clears waivers, he’ll become a free agent. More here:

A few days after placing him on injured reserve, the Kansas City Chiefs have waived RB Derrick Gore with an injury settlement according to the NFL’s daily personnel notice.

Gore suffered a fractured thumb during the preseason Week 2 game against the Washington Commanders. He was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday when the team had to make two additional roster moves to get the roster down to the new 80-man player limit.

Should Gore clear waivers and become a free agent, it’s possible that he rejoins the team at a later date when he is fully healthy. This is a bit of a roster workaround that Brett Veach has done in the past (Gehrig Dieter in 2019) to subvert the NFL’s injured reserve rules. If you place a player on injured reserve prior to 53-man roster cuts, they’re not allowed to be designated to return during the season. Waiving them from injured reserve with an injury designation opens up the possibility that they can be re-signed and play.

Gore first caught on with the Chiefs in February of 2021 when he first signed a reserve/future deal with the team. He was a standout during the preseason in 2021, but he didn’t make the active roster initially. Gore was called up to the 53-man roster from the practice squad when starting RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire was injured in Week 5 against the Buffalo Bills. He stuck on the team for the remainder of the season, recording 51 carries for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

Former Alabama walk-on running back placed on Chiefs’ injured reserve

Derrick Gore formerly played running back at Alabama. On Tuesday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced that Gore had a fractured thumb causing him to be placed on injured reserve.

Alabama has a share of former running backs on NFL rosters. One of those is former walk-on running back Derrick Gore. On Tuesday, ProFootballTalk’s Charean Williams reported that Gore was placed on the Chiefs’ injured reserve seamlessly ending his 2022 season before it started.

Gore joined Alabama by way of Coffeyville Community College. He joined the team as a walk-on. The New York native went on to have 24 carries for 108 rushing yards and one touchdown. He spent two seasons in Tuscaloosa before transferring to play at Louisiana Monroe.

With the Warhawks, he had 295 carries for 1,247 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. After his senior season with the program, he entered the 2019 NFL draft. He would sign as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Chargers. Since joining the league, he has since spent time with the Washington Commanders and Kansas City Chiefs.

In his lone season on an NFL active roster, he had 51 carries for 256 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Unfortunately, Gore is set to miss the entire 2022 NFL season as a result of a fractured thumb that was stated by Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in a press conference on Tuesday.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to track Gore’s injury status as well as other former Alabama football players in the NFL.
