Jaguars sign QB Jake Luton to Reserve/Future contract

The Jaguars are bringing back Luton, who started three games in place of an injured Gardner Minshew in 2020.

Jake Luton is coming home.

The Jacksonville Jaguars shored up their quarterback depth on Friday morning by bringing Luton back on a Reserve/Future contract. The former Oregon State passer was a sixth-round pick for Jacksonville in 2020, and when starting quarterback Gardner Minshew went down with an injury, Luton saw some action down the stretch in addition to Mike Glennon as the team finished 1-15.

He started in three games as a rookie, completing 54.5% of his passes for 473 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions. He spent this offseason with the Jags but was released during final roster cuts on Aug. 31. He landed in Seattle, where he spent most of the regular season bouncing between the practice squad and the active roster when starter Russell Wilson was hurt.

Luton was released by the Seahawks on Nov. 15, and he finished the season on Miami’s practice squad. Now, he’s coming back to Jacksonville where he will aim to push C.J. Beathard for the backup spot behind Trevor Lawrence. The Jags likely won’t keep three quarterbacks on the active roster, but he could be a practice squad candidate if he can’t earn the No. 2 role.

Chiefs sign 13 players to reserve/future contracts

The #Chiefs signed 13 of their 16 practice squad players from 2021 to reserve/future contracts.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed the majority of their practice squad players from the 2021 NFL season to reserve/future contracts per the NFL’s personnel notice for Wednesday.

Like clockwork, at the end of every NFL season, the Chiefs often re-sign the majority of their practice squad players on reserve/future deals. This means they’ll be a part of the 90-man offseason roster when it opens in March and they’ll have a chance to compete for a roster spot in 2022 during the course of the offseason.

Only three players from the practice squad, DT Andrew Billings, DE Joe Jackson and RB Darwin Thompson, were not retained. Here’s a look at the 13 players signed to reserve/future deals by Kansas City and their outlook for 2022:

Chiefs sign RB Brenden Knox to reserve/future contract

The #Chiefs have signed RB Brenden Knox to a reserve/future contract after multiple tryouts with the team during the 2021 NFL season.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed their first player to a reserve/future contract.

According to agent Aston Wilson, the Chiefs have signed RB Brenden Knox to a reserve/future contract. Knox tried out for the team twice during the 2021 regular season, as the team dealt with injuries at the RB position. They maintained a steady level of interest in Knox and now he’ll have a chance to prove himself in the 2022 NFL offseason.

If you’re not familiar with reserve/future deals, they allow teams to sign players before the end of the current league year. Each of these players won’t count against the Chiefs’ roster until the new league year begins and the 90-man offseason roster is opened up.

Knox played collegiate football for the Marshall Thundering Herd, amassing over 3,000 yards from scrimmage and 25 total touchdowns during his three-year college career. Listed at 6-foot and 225 pounds, he’s got the ideal size at the RB position for Chiefs GM Brett Veach.

An undrafted free agent following the 2021 NFL draft, Knox signed on with the Dallas Cowboys where he spent the offseason and preseason. Despite posting a strong performance in the preseason with 29 touches for 110 yards, Knox was cut by Dallas during 53-man roster cuts and he didn’t catch on with any teams on the practice squad.

We’ll see if the Chiefs can develop Knox where the Cowboys could not.

Report: Chiefs sign WR Antonio Callaway to a reserve/future contract

A new report says the Kansas City Chiefs have added a talented receiver on a reserve/future contract.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to get a headstart on their 90-man offseason roster, this time signing an intriguing receiver.

Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor reports that the Chiefs have signed WR Antonio Callaway to a reserve/future contract. Callaway was selected out of the University of Florida in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. He appeared in 16 games for the Browns in 2018 with 11 starts, recording 43 receptions for 586 yards and five touchdowns.

In 2019, Callaway was suspended for the first four games of the season due to a violation of the NFL’s policy on substance abuse. He’d appear in just four games that season, recording 8 receptions for 89 yards. After a number of issues in practice, team meetings, and off the field the team would waive Callaway.

Most recently, Callaway spent the 2020 season with the Miami Dolphins on their practice squad. He faced a suspension again to start the 2020 season, serving three games while on the practice squad. He appeared in a total of five games this season for the Dolphins, including one start. He faced the Chiefs in Week 14 and was targeted twice, but failed to record a reception. He did, however, return two punts for a total of 12 yards. On Monday, Callaway’s practice squad contract in Miami expired, making him an unrestricted free agent and free to sign with any team.

Callaway has always been immensely talented, but off-field issues have stifled his NFL success. Andy Reid, of course, has a history of working with players like this and turning them into success stories. We’ll see if that’s what the future holds for the Chiefs and Callaway.

Kansas City already signed QB Anthony Gordon to a reserve/future deal on Tuesday. This would make the second of such signings by the Chiefs, though, they did report a number of players in for visits on Tuesday. Remember, reserve/future deals do not count toward the roster until the league year changes and the 90-man offseason roster is opened.
