Seahawks’ young safeties getting reps in offseason with veterans out

With veterans Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs out with injuries, the Seattle Seahawks’ young safeties are getting more reps this offseason.

The Seattle Seahawks have been without a number of veterans during OTAs as they recover from injuries. With safeties Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs still sidelined, defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt gets to get a closer look at some of the other players in the position. For him, he sees the positive in the young guys getting the chance to get some reps.

“They’re getting valuable reps that obviously if Jamal and Q were here, they probably don’t see,” Hurtt told reporters after Tuesday’s practice. “So now you have an opportunity to develop young talent behind them and create some depth. I always look at things not from a negative standpoint, but from a positive and what we can do that’s going to help us be better forward.

The younger defensive players will get more opportunities to step up into leadership roles as well, able to find their voices with the established players still absent.

Because Q (Diggs) is such a dominant, great player, dominant personality, when he speaks, everybody’s going to listen naturally,” Hurtt said. “But with him not being here, guys like Ryan, guys like Josh, guys like Ugo, it forces those guys to have to speak, get out of your comfort zone. You don’t have (No.) six back there. You don’t have (No.) 33 back there to be the quarterback right now so you got to go ahead and handle it. It kind of speaks to the development part I was talking about.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to expand their game.”

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson hoping to get reps against Denver

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is hoping to get reps Saturday night against Denver in the team’s preseason home opener.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson sat out the team’s preseason opener in Las Vegas as did most of the starting offense but he’s hoping things are different this Saturday at Lumen Field.

Like he does every game day, Wilson went through the pregame warmups and his mental reps against the Raiders – even though he ultimately ended up watching from the sidelines with his headset on.

“Throughout the game I’m always playing a game as if I’m out there,” Wilson told reporters Wednesday. “Physically not being out there is one thing but to mentally get the reps is the most important thing to be honest with you. To be there and have the crowd there in Vegas and all that and to hear it all, and feel it all, and get your emotions going. I think to prepare your mind to win; to prepare your mind to play is such a critical part of it all, that’s the best part of it.”

The Seahawks are set to square off against the Broncos at home on Saturday night and although Wilson will go through his same pre-game routine, there is no confirmation yet on whether or not he will take the field with his teammates.

“I’m always hoping to play,” Wilson said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, it’s coach’s decision. I’m always ready to play, and obviously being in front of the 12s is always great so we’ll see what happens.”

Seahawks resting left tackle Duane Brown at times to keep him fresh

The Seattle Seahawks will be resting starting left tackle Duane Brown at times during training camp to keep the 13-year-veteran fresh.

The Seattle Seahawks are giving starting left tackle Duane Brown a little downtime during training camp. He sat out Sunday’s practice but not because of an injury.

“We’re trying to take care of him over the long haul,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters during his Zoom press conference on Monday. “He’s in incredible shape. He’s just pumped, looks quick as ever. He can get by with a lesser workload. Long-haul thinking for us.”

But taking care of the 13-year-veteran over the long haul isn’t the only reason Brown might be sitting out some reps.

“And the young guys need the work,” Carroll continued. “Cedric [Ogbuehi] needs to be able to get as many reps as he can to show us what he can do.”

The Seahawks practice again on Tuesday before breaking on Wednesday for this week’s day off.

Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney got reps in Friday’s practice

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (core injury) sat out practice to start the week but got reps in Friday’s walkthrough.

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney will be a game-day decision Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles when the two teams square off in the wild-card round.

Clowney has been battling a core injury over the last month of the season and did not practice to start the workweek. He was a limited participant in Friday’s walkthrough.

“We’re just getting him to game time is all we can get done right now,” coach Pete Carroll said after practice. “He worked today. He got his reps in today and was able to demonstrate the game plan and that he knew what was going on. If this is what we got, this is what we got. We got to work with it.”

Clowney was not listed on the injury report as even questionable to play this weekend and Seattle is hoping he is able to go.

Here’s a look at the current injury statuses as the Seahawks head off to Philadelphia. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 1:40 p.m. PT.
