Garrett Nussmeier gets chance to make some noise in ReliaQuest Bowl

Garrett Nussmeier can put on a show in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

With [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] opting out of the bowl game, LSU’s offense now belongs to [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag].

By now, LSU fans and much of the college football world is familiar with Nussmeier.

He made an impression in last year’s SEC title.Throwing for 294 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Daniels. He followed it up in the bowl game, rotating in, and going 11/15 for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

Nussmeier did all of that in a backup role. Now shifting to QB1, Nussmeier is going to get the first team reps. He is the starter.

When LSU takes the field against Wisconsin, all eyes are going to be on No. 13. This is a guy that many thought could hit the portal and start in 2023. Yet, he elected to stay at LSU despite [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] continuing to say [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] was the starter.

Nussmeier’s been around a while now. He saw time as a freshman in 2021 and has 174 attempts under his belt.

But he’s never gotten a chance like this. To prep as the full-time starter with this supporting cast.

The expectations for LSU shouldn’t come down to how Nussmeier looks on Jan. 1. But if he manages to put on a show, the expectations for the offense, and the team as a whole, will once again be high.

It’s rare a QB of his caliber sits around and waits his turn for three years, but he did. UGA QB Carson Beck took a similar path, and it paid off this fall.

The expectations for Nussmeier next year will be similar. Everyone is expecting a big year and that starts with a big game in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Could LSU DL Mekhi Wingo play in ReliaQuest Bowl vs. Wisconsin?

Mekhi Wingo hasn’t announced his draft decision, but he reportedly practiced without limitation on Tuesday.

LSU saw one major opt-out ahead of the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin as quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] will sit out the game to prepare for the upcoming draft.

But coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said Daniels is the only player he expects to opt out, raising significant questions about several players facing draft decisions.

One of those is injured defensive tackle [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag]. He hasn’t announced his draft decision yet, and he missed the final five games of the season after undergoing surgery for a lower-body injury.

However, Wingo said he would return for the playoffs, and that could also include LSU’s bowl game. According to The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander, Wingo was spotted practicing on Tuesday without limitation.

Alexander also reported that other players facing draft decisions were also practicing.

If Kelly is correct about no other players opting out and Wingo is cleared, it seems he will attempt to play against the Badgers on Jan. 1.

Jayden Daniels will attend ReliaQuest Bowl despite opting out

Jayden Daniels will be there to support his teammates even though he’s skipping the game to prepare for the draft.

On Monday, [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] officially opted out of LSU’s ReliaQuest Bowl match with Wisconsin.

While Daniels left the choice up in the air for some time, this comes as no surprise given he’s done about all he can do for his draft stock and according to some mocks, already a top 10 pick.

However, Daniels said he will remain with LSU and travel with the team for the bowl.

Daniels continued, saying he wanted to support his teammates.

According to Brian Kelly, Daniels is LSU’s lone opt-out not related to the transfer portal. That confirms that [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] will both play, despite being potential first-round picks as well.

Jayden Daniels ranked fourth overall on Mel Kiper’s latest big board.

“Daniels has rare ability as a dual-threat playmaker,” Kiper wrote, “He can evade, elude and blow by defenders, but he also impressed with the way he can run through contact.”

With Daniels out, expect [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] to take over QB1 against Wisconsin.

The Heisman Trophy winner will not play in ReliaQuest Bowl vs Wisconsin

The Heisman Trophy winner will not play in ReliaQuest Bowl vs Wisconsin

Wisconsin is dodging a bullet, if you’re heavily invested in the result of the ReliaQuest Bowl between the Badgers and No. 13 LSU Tigers. LSU star quarterback and 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels announced yesterday he was forgoing the game to prepare for the 2024 NFL Draft.

This would’ve been the second matchup between Daniels and the Badgers, the first being the 2022 Las Vegas Bowl when he was at Arizona State. In today’s era of the College Football Playoff and bowl-game opt-outs, this news shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

LSU will now turn to redshirt sophomore Garrett Nussmeier to start the January 1 contest.

Nussmeier has appeared in 17 games over three years at LSU. He’s tallied a 56.3 completion percentage, 1325 yards, 7.6 yards per attempt, eight touchdowns and six interceptions.

While Daniels is out, Nussmeier will still be throwing to top wide receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr., as head coach Brian Kelly recently said both will play.

Luke Fickell got the Badgers into a New Year’s Day bowl game in this first season as head coach, just not the New Year’s Day game you necessarily want to be in.

It will be the 7-5 Badgers and No. 13 9-3 LSU Tigers in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida.

For those considering a trip and wondering about the ticket prices, it doesn’t appear to be the toughest ticket in the world to get.

As of Tuesday, December 19, SeatGeek has tickets listed from $51 to $1,334. Raymond James Stadium in Tampa does not lack for space, so numerous second-level seats are going for under $100.

The ReliaQuest Bowl, formally known as the Hall of Fame Bowl and the Outback Bowl, has been won by the Badgers twice: a 34-20 victory over Duke in 1995 and the famous 34-31 overtime victory over Auburn in 2015.

It may not be the game Badgers fans hoped for at the start of the season. But knowing how both the LSU and Wisconsin fanbases travel, I’d expect an underrated atmosphere in Tampa for the game.

Brian Kelly not expecting any more opt outs for LSU’s bowl game against Wisconsin

Jayden Daniels is the only player Brian Kelly expects to opt out of the ReliaQuest Bowl.

LSU will be without its Heisman-winning quarterback when it faces Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Jan. 1 as [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] announced Monday that he will be opting out to prepare for the upcoming 2024 NFL draft.

The rest of the team, however, will remain intact. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said on Monday that he expects Daniels to be the only opt-out with the rest of the available players set to participate in the bowl game.

That means we’ll see at least one more LSU appearance from [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag], with the former needing just 17 yards to set the program’s all-time receiving yards record.

LSU will look to reach the 10-win mark for the second year in a row when it takes on the Badgers on New Year’s Day in what will be quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s first career start.

Current ticket prices for LSU’s ReliaQuest Bowl matchup against Wisconsin

If you’re trying to watch the beginning of the Garrett Nussmeier era in person, it’s not going to break the bank.

LSU will head down to sunny Florida on Jan. 1 as it takes on a Big Ten squad in the Wisconsin Badgers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

[autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] is expected to make his first career start at quarterback in the New Year’s Day showdown as Heisman winner [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] announced that he would be declaring for the draft and opting out of the bowl game.

If you’re looking to catch the first glimpse at LSU’s future under center, you’re in luck. As far as college football games go, tickets to the ReliaQuest Bowl are relatively affordable.

As of Monday, tickets begin as cheap as $54 on SeatGeek, though some of the premium seats are going for $400 or more. Still, there are plenty of cheap options in the lower bowl, including available seats near the middle of the field for under $150.

While it’s an intriguing matchup, it’s not a premier bowl game. So if you’re looking to make a winter trip down to Florida to watch the Tigers, getting in the gate at Raymond James won’t hurt the wallet too much.

Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers make ESPN’s All-American team

Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers make ESPN’s All-American team as the honors continue to pile up.

[autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] and [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] continue to pile up the honors this award season, this time making ESPN’s All-America team.

It comes as no surprise given the numbers these two put up. Daniels led the country in total yards and touchdowns.

Nabers’ 1,546 receiving yards led the country, over 100 more than Washington’s Rome Odunze in second place, despite playing one less game.

“Daniels was nothing short of spectacular in a record-setting campaign that saw him pass for 3,812 yards, rush for 1,134 and account for 50 touchdowns,” ESPN’s Chris Low rote.

On Nabers, ESPN highlighted his big play ability with 34 catches for 20+ yards and 17 for 30+ yards.

Nabers could add to those numbers if he elects to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl next month. Nabers was seen at LSU practice earlier this week and previously mentioned wanting to set the program receiving record, which he’s closing in on.

Daniels’ status for the ReliaQuest Bowl remains unclear. LSU will face Wisconsin on Jan. 1.

Wisconsin starting cornerback opts out of ReliaQuest Bowl to prepare for NFL Draft

Wisconsin CB opts out of ReliaQuest Bowl to prepare for NFL Draft

Wisconsin cornerback Jason Maitre announced on Instagram yesterday he is opting out of Wisconsin’s ReliaQuest Bowl matchup with LSU and will prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Maitre transferred to Wisconsin after five years at Boston College. He played in all 12 of the Badgers’ regular season games, totaling 33 tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and three pass breakups.

“To Badger Nation, there is nowhere like Madison and I am blessed to be able to wear that motion ‘W’ for the rest of my life,” Maitre wrote. “With that being said, after a lot of thought, prayer and talks with my family, I have decided to forgo the bowl game and declare for the 2024 NFL Draft.”

Wisconsin’s updated cornerback depth chart for the bowl game now includes Ricardo Hallman, Nyzier Fourqurean, Alexander Smith and Jonas Duclona.

A look back at LSU’s football history with Wisconsin

Here’s the shared history between LSU and Wisconsin as the two prepare to meet again.

LSU is set to face Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year’s Day.

If the ReliaQuest Bowl doesn’t sound all that familiar to you, its because this was formerly known as the Outback Bowl.

This is just LSU’s second trip to this bowl game. The first one came on New Year’s Day in 2014, where [autotag]Jeremy Hill[/autotag] led LSU to a win behind his 216 yards and two touchdowns.

As for LSU’s history with Wisconsin, it’s also limited, but the two have faced each other twice in the last decade.

Let’s take a look back at the series before they meet in Tampa.
