Fishing games that’ll get their hooks in you

Fish games aren’t at the beating heart of the video game industry, unless you count COD.

Fishing video games aren’t at the beating heart of the video game industry, it’s fair to say. Well, not unless you count COD.

But this ancient activity crops up quite a lot in games that don’t otherwise profess to be simulators of it, often providing a welcome diversion from the tiring business of saving worlds. Then there are the more laser-focused titles that accept their niche appeal and simply do their damndest to convey every detail of the sport in a palatable and enjoyable fashion.

Not to mention the unfathomable spike in fishing minigames that have popped up over the years in even the most high-budget titles. It’s a practice that started off as a bit of a meme, but so many games have done it that the whole thing has come full circle and people really like them.

Like a trawler using banned EU nets, we’ve scoured the very depths and then picked out only the very best depictions of fishing in games for your delectation. Please enjoy, and forgive that earlier COD pun. Just be thankful I scrapped my first idea about It Takes Tuna.

Take-Two has ‘heard the frustration’ regarding Red Dead Online

Fans have been pleading for an acknowledgment, and CEO Strauss Zelnick is aware of the frustrations.

Anyone still playing Red Dead Online will tell you that Rockstar’s support has been nearly nonexistent. While GTA Online gets massive collaborations with Dr. Dre, its old-west counterpart gathers dust. The lack of significant updates had fans in an uproar, desperate for a response from either Rockstar or Take-Two. Well, the long-awaited comment from higher-ups finally came.

On Monday, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the #SaveRedDeadOnline initiative during the company’s quarterly earnings call (thanks, IGN).

“Rockstar Games talks about the updates that are coming, and we’re working on an awful lot at Rockstar Games,” Zelnick said. “I’ve heard the frustration, it’s flattering that they want more content, and more will be said by Rockstar in due time.”

[mm-video type=video id=01fssk69f7mwg65dmyf3 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fssk69f7mwg65dmyf3/01fssk69f7mwg65dmyf3-236503b217e203515f27e509293355f5.jpg]

Zelnick then went on to confirm that Red Dead Online will receive long-term support. Sounds promising, right? Well, Take-Two then clarified that the comment was “solely referring to the online servers” and that Rockstar would have the final call on content updates. Not exactly an encouraging follow-up statement, that’s for sure.

Red Dead Online came out back in 2018, and while it’s not as popular as Rockstar was likely hoping for, it would be a crying shame if it slowly faded from existence. After all, decent cowboy games are in short supply.

GTA 6 development is “well underway”, according to Rockstar

Grand Theft Auto 6 (or VI?) is well into development, according to Rockstar Games’ latest GTA Online blog post.

Grand Theft Auto 6 development is “well underway” according to Rockstar Games in a new GTA Online community update, with “official details” coming to the Rockstar Newswire in the future.

Grand Theft Auto 6 has been speculated on endlessly for years, and with Grand Theft Auto V‘s next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series update delayed, fans assumed it’d be a while longer before anyone gets the chance to play Rockstar’s next big open world adventure.

This new information comes shortly after Red Dead Online fans were dismayed with how little content had been added to the game since launch, with very little being added even after Red Dead Online was released as a standalone digital game.

[mm-video type=video id=01fm7bsdg4e7hwk3yb3b playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fm7bsdg4e7hwk3yb3b/01fm7bsdg4e7hwk3yb3b-a249c3e5a3471a0187b8d432924aeae0.jpg]

Rockstar hasn’t had it easy lately, as it was only mere weeks ago that Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy Definitive Edition remastered the PS2 trio of GTA games, and it was met with a mostly negative response thanks to issues relating to visuals, bugs, and performance.

The confirmation that GTA 6 is in development, with the promise of more information coming soon, will have fans feeling relieved and hopeful for the first time since GTA Online‘s The Contract heist was launched, which saw Dr. Dre making an appearance in the game, complete with new music featuring Eminem.

Elsewhere Rockstar’s blog post confirms that the PS5 and Xbox Series versions of GTA Online will be coming this year with new features alongside a standalone GTA Online digital launch. That standalone version will be free for three months for PS+ subscribers on PS5. Game Pass subscribers can hope for a similar deal coming their way.

There’s still plenty of time to speculate on what Grand Theft Auto 6 could be, but for now Rockstar has given fans a reason to be patient, and get excited for the future of Grand Theft Auto.

Fans are furious about Red Dead Online’s lack of content

Fans expect more from Rockstar Games.

Rockstar Games announced Red Dead Online’s update for January, and fans are thoroughly disappointed.

On Thursday, Rockstar Games revealed that all Red Dead Online would be getting in terms of an update is experience points bonus for existing missions and events. Specifically for A Land of Opportunities, Call to Arms, and Gang hideouts — some of which are two years old by now.

Red Dead Online fans have long been unhappy with how Rockstar Games treats the multiplayer  wild west cowboy simulator, especially compared to other live-service games under its umbrella. Grand Theft Auto Online, for instance, just had a  massive storyline update with Dr. Dre. It seems a bit unfair, considering Red Dead Online  came out a full five years after its current-day brethren, wouldn’t you say?

Fans of Red Dead Online  certainly think so, especially after learning that the first thing they’re getting from Rockstar Games in 2022 is an experience point event that runs for a whole month. Typically, that sort of thing goes for a weekend at max.

Naturally, the community took to social media to voice their disappointment. Many posts are accompanied by the hashtag “SaveRedDeadOnline,” hoping they can get it trending. Below, you’ll find several of the more outspoken and prominent community members explaining why they aren’t happy.

The best cowboy games for virtual gunslingers

Looking to don your best shooting irons for a virtual trip to the Wild West? Here are the best cowboy games of all time.

From stirrups to shooting irons, the Wild West is laden with all kinds of iconic imagery we’ve seen dozens of times before. Whether it’s Unforgiven or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, most people have a pretty good idea what they’re in for when they decide to stick a Western on TV. When it comes to the best cowboy games though, things get a bit more… weird.

There are plenty of video game Westerns that are clear homages to their cinematic predecessors, although some of them carve out their own wacky identities by indulging in ideas like monsters, the occult, and bobbleheads that have over time evolved into $30 Funko Pops. While the majority of these games might seem inferior to the works of Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, they’re still intriguing in their own special way – hell, some of them might even be good enough to stand off against history’s greats.

If you’re looking for a good old-fashioned hog-killin’ time, giddy up: here’s our list of the 10 best cowboy games you can play right now.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

A video game cowboy picks off his last opponent outside a saloon

Call of Juarez was always going to appear on the list somewhere. Although Bound in Blood is also pretty great, we went with Gunslinger on account of the fact that it’s newer and more easily approachable for people tackling the series for the first time. If you already know Call of Juarez, then obviously you’re here for another one of the games below – if you’re new though, this is a great starting point.

Played from a first-person perspective, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger puts you in the boots of a bounty hunter and sees you shoot your way through bars and boneyards as you track down all kinds of drifters and desperados. It’s a high-octane freight train of bullets and belligerence that’s perfect for aspiring cowboys from all walks of life.

West of Loathing

West of Loathing's cowboy holding a gun and a beer

Aside from the fact they’re both about cowboys, Call of Juarez and West of Loathing couldn’t possibly be more different. Here, you play as a cowboy in the Kingdom of Loathing, making your way through hilarious, hand-drawn, black-and-white panels flaunting a stick-person style. Where Call of Juarez gives you a double-barrelled shotgun to take down outlaws, West of Loathing asks you to punch idiot cows in their idiot bovine faces.

There’s also a very drunk horse – if that doesn’t sell you on it, nothing will.

West of Dead

A cowboy walks into a bar in West of Dead

Once again, we should probably debunk any similarities that might appear between this game and the last one. Yes, they’re both “west of” something, and yes, they’re both Westerns. Instead of drunk horses though, West of Dead tasks you with gunslinging your way through Purgatory. As in, yes, the enemies here aren’t just other cowboys or weird cows – they’re lizardmen and wendigos. Nice!

It’s an inventive indie cover shooter that takes place in a procedurally generated world, and makes excellent use of twin-stick shooting to keep the combat chaotic in the best possible way. Also it stars Ron Perlman, the only man in the world who is both Hellboy and a bona fide Son of Anarchy.

Desperados 3

A look at the cowboy combat in Desperados 3

Stealth? Check. Real-time tactics? Check. Cowboys roaming the frontier with akimbo revolvers and a penchant for gunslinging? You guessed it! Check.

Desperados 3 was one of the most surprisingly beloved games of 2020, garnering enormous critical acclaim despite a lukewarm reception to 2006’s Desperados 2. While some diehard fans of the series might cite Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive as the entry that belongs on this list, those same people don’t know dung from wild honey. They’ve got ten-dollar Stetsons on five-cent heads. If all their brains were dynamite, there wouldn’t be enough to blow their noses. Just a few cowboy jokes for you there. Hope you liked them.

Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath

Stranger holding his cowboy crossbow in Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

Stranger’s Wrath is an exceptionally good cowboy game, but with the added benefit of also being an exceptionally weird Oddworld game. Instead of metal slugs, you shoot bad guys with… well, actual slugs, as well as spiders, bats, fuzzles, and more.

Like many of the games on this list, Stranger’s Wrath places you in the boots of a bounty hunter scouring the Wild West for outlaws in exchange for moolah. It’s got slick platforming, solid FPS gunplay, and some pretty weird octopi. It also got ported to Nintendo Switch last year, meaning it’s more easily accessible than several of the other games on this list.

Hunt: Showdown

A player holding a rifle in Hunt: Showdown

While people might contest whether or not this pick belongs on a list of the best cowboy games, it’s important to look at Hunt: Showdown for what it is. For all its grimdark grit, this shooter is undoubtedly rooted in a Wild West setting that’s been reappropriated to accommodate the supernatural.

When you’re out with your pals, skulking through quagmires while enemies attempt to do the same, there is a very cowboyish quality to the duel that eventually ensues. It’s not necessarily just about who’s quickest on the draw, meaning there’s a little less respect for your foes here, but then again, this is a world that’s been infested by bloodthirsty zombies. There’s far less honor among thieves once the dead start walking.

Red Dead Online

A cowboy on horseback in Red Dead Online

A massive, open-world Wild West filled with many friends and more enemies, where you can listen to the sauntering of a breakaway creek or dive into the depths of all-out war. Red Dead Online is, in many ways, arguably the best cowboy game out there depending on what exactly you want to get out of virtual gunslinging. While we’re more interested in Rockstar’s single-player efforts, it’s hard to look at a game this good and deny it its rightful place on the list purely because we’re sick of getting robbed by veteran players who get a kick out of being nasty.

Red Dead Online has all the magic of a typical Rockstar world in that it’s dense, realistic, and ridiculously gorgeous. The main difference is obviously that instead of playing through a linear story, you get to explore this world with your pals and make it your own. It’s a must-play for anyone who can stomach their moonshine.

Fallout: New Vegas

A Fallout: New Vegas cowboy analysing his opponent

You might be thinking to yourself, “Fallout: New Vegas? A cowboy game? Bit of a stretch.” And to be fair, it could definitely seem that way when you look at its Super Mutants and nuclear bombs. In a world of whiskey, watering holes, and weapons for wranglers, however, it’s difficult to see yourself being anywhere other than the Wild West.

Fallout: New Vegas is one of the most beloved RPGs of the last 20 years and is widely considered to be the finest entry in Bethesda’s beloved series, likely because it was actually developed by powerhouse studio Obsidian. This is probably the best game on the entire list for carving out your own cowboy story in that it starts with you being shot in the head, left for dead, and finding yourself on the cusp of inventing a whole new identity – I wanna be a cowboy, baby.

Red Dead Redemption

John Marston on horseback in Red Dead Redemption

Nobody will ever forget that first ride into Mexico, where Jose Gonzalez’ Far Away accompanies the steady sauntering of your trusty steed. Red Dead Redemption is generally esteemed as one of the greatest games of all time, acting as a perfect showcase of that Rockstar X-factor that separated it from other studios in 2010 and continues to distinguish it today.

If you’re this far into the list, you’ll probably already know a whole lot about Red Dead Redemption – the premise, the characters, the critical consensus pertaining to it. Still, if you haven’t yet experienced it for yourself, this is your cue to change that. And if you have? Well, then you’ll know perfectly well why you should do it all over again. Unless…

Red Dead Redemption 2

Arthur Morgan wearing a balaclava in Red Dead Redemption 2

The only cowboy game capable of topping Rockstar’s 2010 classic is Rockstar’s 2020 masterpiece. While bigger is not always better, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the kind of game you’d show aliens to prove that us lowly humans are actually alright. It’s written with drive and restraint in equal parts, built with an unprecedented amount of care, and designed with such brilliant cohesion that typing this now makes us want to quit our job mid-sentence and downl-

Sorry, we got distracted for 100 hours. Anyway, you should probably play Red Dead Redemption 2, the single greatest cowboy video game ever made. You know you want to, boah.

Henry Cavill wants to be in a Red Dead Redemption movie

You just yeed your last haw, Geralt.

During a red carpet event for The Witcher  Season 2, Henry Cavill expressed some interest in a silver screen adaptation of  Red Dead Redemption

A brief interview with  GameReactor  reveals that Cavill recently began playing Rockstar Games monumental cowboy simulator, and he’s eager to see what that world could be like on film.

“Well, that’s a tricky one because you’re tying both an IP and a company together, which is a tricky thing to do, so I certainly don’t want to put myself in any corners with that, but there are plenty of games out there,” Cavill said. “I’ve actually started playing Red Dead Redemption 2  (I know I’m a little bit late to that party) but I started playing it and I’m really enjoying it. And so, something like that I think would be fun to turn into a movie”.

Cavill knows how to do fictional characters justice. At least we thought he did as Geralt of Rivia in  Season 2 of The Witcher.

Anyone all caught up on the series might want to look at our  explainer for the finale. Bit of a head-scratcher, that one.

Cavill also  recently expressed interest in the rumored Mass Effect  TV series. There is still no official word on that yet, though some  former Bioware staffers aren’t big on the idea  of an adaptation.

Modders add zombies to ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ on PC

Red Undead Redemption, more like.

A duo of passionate modders have added zombies to Red Dead Redemption 2  on PC, PCGamesN  reported Wednesday.

The Undead Nightmare II – Origins  mod by Dick Hertz and Eki is an obvious callback to the original Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare  DLC. Unlike the first game, Red Dead Redemption 2  never had an official zombie expansion from Rockstar Games. So Hertz and Eki wanted to change that! If you crave swarms of zombies roaming about the old west, this mod should satisfy your undead desires.

There’s no trailer for Undead Nightmare II – Origins, but YouTuber Quarantine Gamer did a showcase of the mod, which you can watch below.

The mod adds changes the behavior of NPC characters in Red Dead Redemption 2 too. Some take shelter on high ground, while others board-up shops to keep zombies at bay. There’s also the blood moon, which carpets in landscapes in blood-red light and fog. Spooky stuff!

If you want to give Undead Nightmare II – Origins a shot, it’s available for free  here. There are installation instructions on that page if you need a hand to sort out the backend of things.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s modding scene is slowly growing, especially since Rockstar Games have yet to add single-player content. The studio is knee-deep in work for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and presumably Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR
