Thoughts and Things To Know: Lonnie Walker IV ices Warriors late in Game 4 as Lakers take 3-1 lead

Lonnie Walker IV broke out in the fourth quarter to ice the Warriors in Game 4 to give the Lakers a commanding 3-1 lead in the second round series.

With a seven point lead heading into the final frame, the Golden State Warriors were just 12 minutes away from evening the series against the Los Angeles Lakers at 2-2 and flying back to the Bay Area for a home game in Game 5.

While the series will still shift back to San Francisco for Game 5, things won’t be tied at 2-2 with the Lakers and Warriors. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers leaned on an unexpected hero alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis to steal a late comeback 104-101 win in a thriller over the Warriors to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.

Before the Warriors face elimination in Game 5 against the Lakers on Wednesday, here’s some thoughts and things to know from Game 4 on Monday night.

NBA Twitter reacts to Warriors falling down 3-1 after dropping late battle vs. Lakers in Game 4

The Warriors had no answer for Lonnie Walker IV in the fourth quarter as they fell down 3-1 to the Lakers with a 104-101 loss in Game 4.

If the Golden State Warriors were going to fall down 3-1 to the Los Angeles Lakers, it would likely come by the hands of LeBron James or Anthony Davis. While the Lakers duo did their job, it was an unlikely hero who stunned the Warriors in the fourth quarter on Monday night in Hollywood.

After a strong third quarter, the Warriors carried a seven-point lead into the final frame with a chance to even the series before heading back to the Bay Area. Despite not taking a shot through 15 minutes of playing time, Lonnie Walker IV came alive off the bench for the Lakers in the fourth quarter.

Walker IV tallied 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field in the fourth quarter alone. Walker IV continued to knock down clutch shots while helping the Lakers deplete the Warriors’ advantage.

After the Lakers took control late behind Walker IV’s surprise breakout performance, Steph Curry had back-to-back looks at hitting game-tying jumpers. Yet, the defending NBA Finals MVP’s shot went cold in the final seconds as the Warriors fell to the Lakers, 104-101.

Following the Warriors’ loss in Game 4 to drop to 3-1 in the second-round series to the Lakers, the NBA community on Twitter chimed in with different reactions. Here’s a look at what fans and analysts were saying on Monday night.

Cowboys rookie class features 2 of nation’s Top 5 in key defensive stat

From @ToddBrock24f7: One was a 4th-round pick; one wasn’t drafted at all. But both Viliami Fehoko and Durrell Johnson do one thing better than almost everybody.

Creating havoc up front is the name of the game for defensive linemen- blowing up the plans of the opposing offense and not just holding the line of scrimmage but pushing it backward.

The Cowboys were tied for third in the league last year with 93 tackles for loss, just four behind the top-ranked Eagles. But Dallas may make even further improvements in that particular category in 2023 if two members of the incoming rookie class stay on the trajectories that have brought them to the Cowboys.

Fourth-round pick Viliami Fehoko finished last season with 19 tackles for loss with San Jose State. That was the fifth-highest total in college football; more than Will Anderson Jr., more than Tyree Wilson, more than Calijah Kancey- all of whom were Top-20 selections in this year’s draft.

But the Cowboys believe the 23-year-old Fehoko is capable of performing well beyond his selection slot.

“We’ve got a definition that fits that fourth round,” Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay said over draft weekend. “It’s a guy that can come in and play and potentially start. And if they achieve that, then we’re hitting a home run. When you go in the first three rounds, people are looking for the prototype, but when the prototype runs out, you continue to go and look for football players that have the traits to play the position that you want them to play.”

And the Cowboys like what they saw in Fehoko’s play for the Spartans in the Mountain West Conference.

“You look at his stats, you look at his production, you look at the tape,” McClay said of the East Palo Alto native. “He does some unique things in getting edges, winning, attacking the football when he goes after the quarterback. He’s got a mission when he gets off on the snap. He gets off on the ball, and he makes big plays.”

Sharrif Floyd, the Cowboys’ new assistant defensive line coach, predicts that Fehoko will step in and contribute immediately at defensive end, but he hinted that the team may have a bigger plan for him in the future.

“I think this guy can can easily get into our rotation this year,” Floyd told The Draft Show, “and then within the next year or so, I see him moving inside to be a true 3-tenchnique. He’s got the quickness and the get-off and the power to do so, so we’ll probably get a little more weight on him and let him play inside and be disruptive for us.”

Along with Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Sam Williams, and Osa Odighizuwa- all of whom registered double-digit TFLs last season, Fehoko will look to end up in the opposing backfield as often as possible.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

But they might all be able to pick up a thing or two from one of the Cowboys’ undrafted free agents.

Durrell Johnson went unselected over the draft’s seven rounds. But Dallas still managed to land the Liberty defensive end who led the entire FBS in 2022 in total tackles for loss. His 27.5 mark was 5.5 TFLs higher than the second-place guy, USC’s Tuli Tuipulotu, who played one more game than Johnson and was a Friday-night draft pick.

But Johnson’s not just a one-year wonder. He was Top-30 in the nation in 2020 in sacks and made the Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik watchlists, before a knee a knee injury slowed his 2021 production and caused him to miss four games for the Flames.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic said the 250-pound Johnson “needs to continue getting stronger, but he has developmental traits in a 3-4 scheme with closing burst for a superpower.”

Sounds like he and Fehoko are custom-built for coaching up within the Dallas system as coordinator Dan Quinn continues to tinker with the Cowboys defense.

Add in fellow newcomers Mazi Smith and DeMarvion Overshown, continued excellence from Johnathan Hankins and Dorance Armstong and the veterans named above, and increased usage for youngsters Damone Clark and Jabril Cox, and it all points to the Dallas defense doubling down on their current standing as agents of chaos up front.

247Sports predicts Auburn’s upset, letdown games of 2023 season

These two teams will keep Auburn on its’ toes says one college football analyst.

The college football season is just under four months away, but Auburn fans are feeling positive about their team for the first time in several years.

A new coach with new ideas, as well as upgrades to several positions via the transfer portal, could send Auburn bowling in 2023. However, as is the norm in college football, there will be several games across the nation that will not go as planned. The same can be said for Auburn and its’ fellow SEC brethren.

Because of the unpredictability of the college football season, BamaOnLine’s Kirk McNair broke down each SEC team’s schedule to find the best chance for upsets. For Auburn, he sees the Tigers knocking off an SEC West contender while suffering a letdown game on the road to an SEC East foe.

Some chastised me last year for predicting Auburn to be 6-6 overall and 2-6 in the SEC, and I’ll admit to being only partially right. AU was 2-6 in the conference, but only 5-7 overall. As for this year with a roster that was left depleted by Bryan Harsin, the jury is out on the Tigers. We’ll go with the upset win at Texas A&M Sept. 23, upset loss to Vanderbilt Nov. 4 just when the Tigers’ ship seems to be righted en route to bowl eligibility.

Auburn’s history with Texas A&M is favorable, as the Tigers boast a 4-1 record in games played at Kyle Field. The prediction for an upset appears to be due to the hype surrounding Jimbo Fisher’s squad. College football experts feel that Texas A&M will make a run for the SEC West title by challenging Alabama this season. The jury is still out on Texas A&M, so it is still too early to declare an Auburn win over the Aggies as an “upset.”

As for the Vanderbilt prediction, it will be a good thing that the game will be played in November. Because of this, we will get a chance to see just how each team has improved over the season, or if they are relatively the same as the season before. If Auburn were to have played the Commodores during October of last season, I would call the game a toss-up. However, with a new staff and new headlining players, this game should be easily winnable by the Tigers.

Falcons ranked 27th in PFF’s post-draft power rankings

The #Falcons landed at No. 27 in Pro Football Focus’ new post-draft power rankings

The Atlanta Falcons were among the most active teams throughout the 2023 NFL offseason. Not only did the team go on a spending spree in free agency, the Falcons came away from the draft with arguably the biggest impact player in the entire class.

First-round pick Bijan Robinson is expected to take Atlanta’s ground game to another level this season. The trio of Robinson, Tyler Allgeier and veteran Cordarrelle Patterson should help open things up for second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder.

While the Falcons are undoubtedly a better team than they were last season, did they do enough to snap their current five-year playoff drought?

Since we still have plenty of time to kill before the 2023 season kicks off, let’s check out what some of the national analysts are saying. Pro Football Focus released their post-draft power rankings and Atlanta remained near the bottom of the league, coming in at No. 27:

The Falcons signed one of the best safeties in the league in Jessie Bates III after their 2022 safeties ranked 26th in defensive grade, so this is a much-needed upgrade. In the front seven, Atlanta went with a platoon approach, adding interior defenders David Onyemata and Calais Campbell, edge rusher Bud Dupree and linebacker Kaden Elliss.

While Robinson will produce right out of the gate, the Falcons still have other positions they need to address with top-end talent, including edge rusher, wide receiver and outside cornerback. Amelia Probst & Arjun Menon, Pro Football Focus

The Falcons are continuing to apply their platoon approach in the secondary, signing Jessie Bates III’s former teammate, Tre Flowers, to a one-year deal on Monday. Flowers brings some depth and experience to that outside corner spot.

The team traded for Jeff Okudah prior to the draft, but his contract is up after the season since the trade negated his fifth-year option. Atlanta also added Utah defensive back Clark Phillips III in the fourth round of the 2023 draft.

Make sure to check out the team’s complete post-draft roster and our starting lineup projection for next season.

Bears might not be playing Chiefs in Germany after all

According to Peter King, the Chiefs have requested the Bears game not be played overseas.

While we’re still waiting for word on the NFL’s schedule release, there’s been plenty of speculation about one of the Chicago Bears’ 2023 games.

There have been multiple reports that the Bears will face the Kansas City Chiefs in Germany this upcoming season, including most recently by German newspaper Bild. But that might not be the case.

According to NBC Sports’ Peter King, the Chiefs requested to not have the Bears game played overseas.

When a team gives up one of its home games to play overseas, it has the option of requesting to the league one home game on its schedule the team does not want moved. I’m told Kansas City requested that the Chicago game not be played overseas.

Considering the draw of the Chicago fanbase, it would make sense why the Chiefs would like to keep this game in Kansas City.

The Bears have played in London on three different occasions — their last time being against then-Oakland Raiders in 2019. But this would mark their first time playing in Germany, if that winds up being the case.

The Bears-Chiefs matchup features a number of intriguing storylines, including Justin Fields vs. Patrick Mahomes and the Bears facing off against former head coach and current Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

PFF moves Browns up significantly in their power rankings

PFF agrees with the moves the Browns have made.

By all accounts, it has been a great offseason for the Cleveland Browns, on paper anyways. Additions like Juan Thornhill, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo should make the defense significantly better.

PFF has released their post-draft power rankings and the Browns saw a jump from 21 pre-draft to ninth with everything they have done.

“The Browns shored up their defense this offseason by adding safety Juan Thornhill, defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and edge Ogbonnia Okoronkwo. Drafting Siaki Ika, who posted a 76.4 PFF pass-rushing grade and an 11.6% pass-rush win rate in 2022, will morph their defense into a force to be reckoned with. Cleveland also added to its receiving corps by drafting Tennessee wide receiver Cedric Tillman.”

Allen Flanigan officially enters transfer portal

Flanigan will look for a new home after receiving his undergraduate degree last weekend.

In news that was somewhat expected, Auburn forward [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] announced Monday that he will enter the transfer portal as a graduate student.

ESPN’s Jeff Borzello was the first to report the news of Flanigan’s decision and says that he will likely follow his father, Wes, to Ole Miss. Wes Flanigan departed Auburn’s staff last month in order to reunite with Chris Beard, whom he coached under at Arkansas-Little Rock during the 2015-16 season.

Flanigan played in 114 games during his four-year career at Auburn, where he averaged 8.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. He connected on 52% of two-point field goals, and 29% of three-pointers. Flanigan made the decision to enter the transfer portal following Auburn University’s graduation ceremonies last weekend, where he received his Bachelor’s degree.

Auburn transfer target Jaden Muskrat to announce decision soon

Could another former Tulsa player follow Philip Montgomery to Auburn?

After a successful week of landing three new players from the transfer portal, Auburn could receive good news from another target in the upcoming days.

[autotag]Jaden Muskrat[/autotag], an offensive lineman who entered the transfer portal last month from Tulsa, says that he is close to making a transfer decision.

Last weekend, the Bentonville, Arkansas native visited his in-state school, Arkansas. While on his visit, he told Otis Kirk of Pig Trail Nation that after visiting Auburn and Arkansas, he is unsure of where, or when, his next visit will be.

“I’m not for sure,” Muskrat said. “The time frame is pretty short in this.”

Muskrat received an offer from Auburn on April 15 and was on campus for a visit during the weekend of April 22 alongside former Cincinnati linebacker Jaheim Bell, who recently committed to Arkansas.

Muskrat’s ties to Auburn involve one member of the current coaching staff, as well as a new member of Auburn’s roster. Muskrat played for new Auburn offensive coordinator and former Tulsa head coach [autotag]Philip Montgomery[/autotag] and played alongside Tulsa transfer [autotag]Dillon Wade[/autotag] on the Golden Hurricane offensive line last season.

Muskrat played 848 snaps last season at Tulsa, primarily at right tackle, opposite Wade. He allowed just three sacks and four quarterback hits in 2022.
