After beating Jeremy Stephens at 2022 PFL 1, Clay Collard eager for revenge vs. Raush Manfio

“I just want to fight Raush whenever, wherever. I want to get it back, man.”

ARLINGTON, Texas – Before the 2022 PFL season is over, [autotag]Clay Collard[/autotag] wants an opportunity to rematch [autotag]Raush Manfio[/autotag].

Collard (21-9) lost a controversial decision to Manfio in last year’s semifinals, putting an end to his 2021 title hopes. Manfio went on to become the lightweight champion and after both men emerged victorious Wednesday at 2022 PFL 1, Collard hopes they can run things back.

“I just want to fight Raush whenever, wherever,” Collard told MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight. “I want to get it back, man.”

He continued, “I felt like I won the fight, the fans felt that I won the fight, the computer system had me winning the fight, both veteran commentators had me winning the fight, so he’s delusional.”

Manfio (16-3) came from behind to knock out Don Madge on Wednesday, but it was Collard’s barnburner against Jeremy Stephens that received the headlining spot on the night, which doesn’t surprise the professional boxer.

“It was a snoozefest until that last punch,” Collard said of Manfio’s win.

“I knew it was going to be the most exciting fight on the card,” Collard said of his fight with Stephens. “That’s why there were two returning champions, and they were on my undercard because I’m the most entertaining guy period.”

Video: Raush Manfio knocks out Don Madge in comeback win at 2022 PFL 1

Watch PFL champion Raush Manfio pull off comeback KO against Don Madge at 2022 PFL 1.

It was a close call for [autotag]Raush Manfio[/autotag].

The 2021 PFL lightweight champion picked up an impressive comeback win, putting away his opponent Don Madge at the 2:42 mark of Round 3 in a bout that he was likely losing on the scorecards. The 155-pound contest took place in the co-main event of 2022 PFL 1 event in Arlington, Texas.

The win earned Manfio four points in the season.

Although Manfio (16-3) was hanging with Madge (11-4-1), it seemed the Brazilian was behind the scorecards, as Madge was landing the bigger shots and had the most volume throughout the fight. But that all changed when Manfio connected with a hard right hand that dropped Madge. From there, Manfio followed up with ground-and-pound, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Below you can watch Manfio’s knockout:

Manfio win the 2021 PFL lightweight title and $1 million prize after entering the tournament as an alternate. The 30-year-old is on a five-fight winning streak, which includes notable names such as Clay Collard and Anthony Pettis.

The PFL is back for the start of another season, and lightweights and light heavyweights open the 2022 campaign.

PFL 2022, Week 1 takes place Wednesday at Esports Arena in Arlington, Texas. The main card airs on ESPN/ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, longtime UFC fighter [autotag]Jeremy Stephens[/autotag] (28-19) makes the move to the PFL for a shot at the lightweight title. He takes on [autotag]Clay Collard[/autotag] (20-9) in the season opener. It’s the most contentious fight in the picks from our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers, who have Collard with just a 6-5 lead.

In the co-feature, 2021 lightweight winner [autotag]Raush Manfio[/autotag] (15-3) meets [autotag]Don Madge[/autotag] (10-3-1) in the first fight in his quest to win another season. Manfio is a near-unanimous pick at 10-1.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Antonio Carlos Junior[/autotag] (13-5) opens the light heavyweight season against [autotag]Delan Monte[/autotag] (8-1). Junior is the only unanimous pick from our staff members at 11-0.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Olivier Aubin-Mercier[/autotag] (13-5) takes on two-time lightweight winner [autotag]Natan Schulte[/autotag] (21-4-1). Schulte has a big 9-2 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Collard (50.1 percent), Madge (54 percent), Junior (83 percent) and Schulte (52 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

MMA Junkie’s 2021 awards: A complete list of winners

Check out our complete list of 2022 award winners in MMA.

The MMA Junkie staff came together to hand out 15 awards for the 2021 calendar year. Congratulations to all the winners. The complete list can be seen below.

MMA Junkie’s 2021 Newcomer of the Year: Raush Manfio

From alternate to PFL champion, Raush Manfio is MMA Junkie’s 2021 Newcomer of the Year after a monumental PFL season.

If it feels like [autotag]Raush Manfio[/autotag] came out of nowhere in 2021, it’s because he basically did.

The Brazilian fighter had one of the most remarkable years not only in the PFL, but across any organization, and maybe even in all of sports. Manfio (15-3) entered the 2021 PFL lightweight season as an alternate. It was a Hail Mary in a fighting career that wasn’t panning out the way he hoped.

Manfio was working as a janitor and teaching MMA classes on the side. He hadn’t fought since the summer of 2018 and was coming off a loss to Sidney Outlaw that saw him lose his Titan FC title. In a nearly three-year layoff, Manfio had a tough time getting opponents, and that was made even more difficult when the pandemic hit.

The Brazilian was disappointed in his career, to say the least, and was on the brink of retirement. But his manager,, Brian Butler, talked him off the ledge and told him to give him a chance at getting him into the PFL before making a final decision. The PFL came calling when it needed someone to replace an injured Olivier Aubin-Mercier to fight Joilton Lutterbach on short notice.

In the first event of the season, Manfio got the ball rolling when he edged Lutterbach with a split decision and notched three points to enter among the qualifying top four.

But his work wasn’t done. The lightweights came back on centerstage seven weeks later in June for the final regular season bouts. Manfio was set to fight friend and two-time PFL champion Natan Schulte. But Anthony Pettis, who was headlining the event, was forced to withdraw from the card. Schulte then was matched up with Pettis’ opponent, Alexander Martinez, and Manfio was removed from the card and scheduled to fight former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Pettis later that month.

In the biggest fight of his career, Manfio pulled off an upset in a tough, gritty battle. He eliminated Pettis from the season, edging him out in a split decision in the co-main event. It was a high-profile victory that punched his ticket to the PFL playoffs and gave him a chance to become a champion and win a $1 million prize.

Although it was a monumental win for Manfio, he still had his work cut out. He was paired against fan-favorite Clay Collard, who was looking good and on a four-fight winning streak. And on the other side of the bracket, 2019 PFL runner-up Loik Radzhabov faced Paraguay’s Martinez.

Manfio’s 2021 PFL lightweight season conquest seemed like it was destined.

Once again, the Brazilian defied the odds. In a competitive and close bout, Manfio knocked off Collard in the semifinals to put himself one win away from the title. Radzhabov beat Martinez on the other side of the bracket, setting up Manfio for a tough finale.

In one of the best PFL fights of the year, Manfio and Radzhabov went toe-to-toe for 25 minutes. Both fighters had their moments and there were dramatic shifts of momentum in the fight. But Manfio finished strong and imposed himself on a fading Radzhabov. He won the championship fight by unanimous decision with scores of 49-46, 48-46 and 48-46.

At the start of the 2021 PFL season, Manfio largely was an unknown figure in MMA. He hadn’t fought since 2018 and had yet to test himself in a major promotion. In just one year, “Cavalo de Guerra” notched four consecutive wins, upsetting Collard and Pettis in the process to win the 2021 PFL lightweight title and a $1 million prize.

Manfio defied the odds. Hs he was a +1000 underdog to win the 2021 PFL season. He also let his presence be known to the entire MMA world and is MMA Junkie’s 2021 Newcomer of the Year.
