Broncos beef up defensive line with 14th reserve/future signing

The Broncos added some depth to their defensive line by signing Rashard Lawrence (308 pounds) to a reserve/future contract.

The Denver Broncos added some depth to their defensive line on Wednesday by signing Rashard Lawrence to a reserve/future contract. Lawrence was eligible to sign a future deal because he was not on an active roster at the end of his 2023 season.

Lawrence (6-2, 308 pounds) will officially join Denver’s 90-man offseason roster when the NFL’s new league year begins in March. He entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of LSU with the Arizona Cardinals in 2020.

Lawrence played under Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph in Arizona from 2020-2022, totaling 30 tackles (four behind the line) and one forced fumble in 25 games (13 starts). He spent time with the Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans in 2023.

Denver’s list of upcoming in-house free agents includes defensive linemen Mike Purcell and Jonathan Harris. Meanwhile, D.J. Jones is set to have a salary cap hit just shy of $13 million in 2024 and the Broncos could save almost $10 million if they part ways with Jones this spring.

Denver needed more depth on the defensive line, and Lawrence is a good start. The team previously signed 13 other players to reserve/future deals. View all of the offseason additions below.

Panthers’ updated practice squad after Tuesday’s return of Matthias Farley

S Matthias Farley is back in the fold for the Panthers’ practice squad.

The sideline will look extra different for the Carolina Panthers this weekend.

As the team continues its transition from head coach Frank Reich to interim head coach Chris Tabor, they made an adjustment to their practice squad this afternoon. In is safety Matthais Farley, who has played five games for the Panthers this season, and out is defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence.

So, let’s take an updated look at the 15-player group:

Panthers bring back Matthias Farley to practice squad

The Panthers have added S Matthias Farley back to their practice squad.

After yet another loss, the Carolina Panthers will be forced to deal with even more injuries. So, they made an adjustment on their practice squad this afternoon to patch themselves up.

As first reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, the team has signed safety Matthias Farley back to the group. The 31-year-old defender, who was released back on Nov. 15, has appeared in five games for Carolina this season.

Farley initially signed on with his hometown team on Sept. 19. The Charlotte, N.C. native spent his seven previous NFL seasons between the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders.

He recorded nine total tackles over his five outings, which included a start in Week 6 against the Miami Dolphins. Farley’s return comes after starting safety Vonn Bell exited this past Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans with a shoulder injury.

To make room for Farley on the practice squad, the Panthers released defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence—who joined the team on Nov. 10.

Panthers’ updated 16-man practice squad after addition of Rashard Lawrence

Here’s how the Panthers’ practice squad now looks after the addition of Rashard Lawrence:

The Carolina Panthers’ practice squad got a bit beefier on Friday.

6-foot-2, 208-pound defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence signed on with the group earlier this afternoon. The big defender will take the spot now left vacant by rookie cornerback Mark Milton, who was released one week after his return to the organization.

So, let’s take an updated look at Carolina’s 16-man squad:

Panthers sign DT Rashard Lawrence to practice squad

The Panthers signed former Cardinals fourth-round pick Rashard Lawrence to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers made an adjustment to their practice squad fresh off their Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Joining the group will be defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence, who signed with the team on Friday. The 6-foot-2, 308-pounder played each of the prior three seasons as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.

Before making it to the pros, Lawrence was a standout defender at Louisiana State University from 2016 to 2019—where he totaled 120 combined tackles (20.5 for a loss), 9.0 sacks, seven passes defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. His senior campaign would end with a Second-team All-SEC selection and a national title victory.

Lawrence was then selected in the fourth round of the 2020 draft by Arizona. He appeared in 25 for the Cardinals from 2020 to 2022, amassing 30 combined tackles.

To make room for the addition, the Panthers released cornerback Mark Milton. Milton, who spent the summer with the team as an undrafted free-agent, had been inked to the practice squad a week ago.

Dolphins swap DL on the practice squad

Miami moves on from a DL, brings another back.

On Saturday, the Miami Dolphins had to do some roster managing with left tackle Terron Armstead returning from injured reserve.

To open a spot for him on the 53-man roster, Miami chose to waive undrafted rookie defensive lineman Brandon Pili, who had impressed in camp.

Now, on Tuesday, they’ve opted to re-sign Pili to their practice squad after he went unclaimed. However, to open up a spot for him, they had to release someone, and the team chose defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence.

Lawrence was signed to Miami’s practice squad following roster cuts after a three-year stint with the Arizona Cardinals. He was never elevated to the active roster for a game.

Players recently cut that could interest the Detroit Lions

Here are some recently cut players that stand out as guys Lions GM Brad Holmes could go after.

Roster cutdowns can be an opportunity to build up a roster. Players who didn’t make one team, for whatever reason, might wind up being a good fit for another. For the Detroit Lions and GM Brad Holmes, it’s an opportunity to potentially churn the bottom of the roster even after the initial 53-man unit has been established.

Waiver claims right after the roster cutdown aren’t terribly common. but they do happen. This is how the Lions added Romeo Okwara to the roster back in 2017. There is now an opportunity for another player or two to join Okwara as a roster cutdown waiver claim who can become a long-term Lion.

The Lions are 18th in the waiver wire order by virtue of their 9-8 finish in 2022; the waiver wire order is based on the final result of the prior season at this point. Remember: players claimed on waivers go directly to the 53-man active roster, which means someone who initially made the Lions would have to be removed from the active roster — be it a cut or a move to the injured reserve.

While I don’t expect the Lions to be very active on the waiver claim front, there are a few players who got cut by other teams that could fit roles in Detroit. Here are some that stand out as players GM Brad Holmes could go after.

Cardinals place DL Rashard Lawrence on IR, sign K Rodrigo Blankenship to roster

Lawrence will be out at least a month with his shoulder injury and might be done for the season if he needs surgery.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a pair of roster moves on Wednesday. Defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence, who injured his shoulder in Thursday’s 42-34 win over the New Orleans Saints, was placed on injured reserve.

To replace him on the roster, the team signed kicker Rodrigo Blankenship from the practice squad to the active roster.

Lawrence will miss at least the next four games. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Wednesday his shoulder could need surgery but they won’t know right away if he can return or if his season will be over.

“It’s going to be a wait-and-see,” he said. “I’d say it’s a month before we’ll know anything — whether we can rehab it and play or just go to IR.”

It is the third time in three NFL seasons Lawrence has landed on IR.

Blankenship’s addition to the active roster suggests the Cardinals plan on using him for a second straight game. Kingsbury said that Matt Prater could return to kick field goals but Blankenship would at least be used for kickoffs.

Cardinals DL Rashard Lawrence to miss time after hand surgery

The Cardinals will be down a starting defensive lineman at least one week as Lawrence had hand surgery Monday.

The Arizona Cardinals will be down a defensive lineman this next week as they prepare to take on the Carolina Panthers. Defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence will miss time with a hand injury.

Lawrence had hand surgery Monday, Kliff Kingsbury told reporters Monday.

“I’m not sure of the exact timetable, but he won’t play this week,” he said.

Lawrence injured his hand in the second half of the Cardinals’ 20-12 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He played 19 defensive snaps in the game.

He landed on injured reserve each of his first two seasons in the NFL. Hopefully, he only has to miss a game or two. With him out, Jonathan Ledbetter will get to play. He has been inactive for each of the last two games.

Lawrence did nor register a tackle in the game on Sunday. Through three games, he has four tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
