Giants’ Rashaan Gaulden calls out Perry Fewell

New York Giants defensive back Rashaan Gaulden called out former Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell on Thursday.

After the Carolina Panthers fired Ron Rivera in early December of last year, defensive backs coach Perry Fewell was promoted to interim head coach.

Fewell, of course, is a long-time coaching veteran at the NFL level, having broken onto the scene with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1998 under then-head coach Tom Coughlin, whom he later followed to New York.

Given the old school environment in which Fewell is accustomed to, it should come as little surprise that’s become a staple of his leadership. And for some — just as it was for Coughlin — that doesn’t sit well.

On Thursday, Giants defensive back Rashaan Gaulden called out Fewell on Twitter, claiming the 57-year-old tried to “steal his love of the game,” but ultimately just provided him with more motivation.

Gaulden was a third-round pick of the Panthers in the 2018 NFL Draft, but after appearing in 15 games as rookie, managed to make just nine appearances before being waived by Carolina last season.

At the time of Fewell’s hire, Jalen Ramsey, who had worked under Fewell during the coach’s second stint with the Jaguars from 2017-2018, tweeted a warning to Gaulden and other Jacksonville defensive backs.

Ramsey was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2019, a year after Fewell’s departure, while Gaulden was signed by the Giants just a week after being waived by Fewell and the Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers turned over almost their entire coaching staff this offseason. Ron Rivera has taken most of the team’s former coaches with him to the toxic dumpster fire that is the Washington franchise. Others have moved on to different positions around the league.

After Rivera was fired, defensive backs coach Perry Fewell was promoted to interim head coach. Unlikely as it was, the Panthers managed to get worse during that run and finished the season 0-4 under Fewell.

Now, one of his old players is calling him out. Former Panthers safety Rashaan Gaulden says Fewell tried to steal his love for the game in a tweet this morning.

Gaulden was a third-round pick by Marty Hurney in the 2018 draft, but he didn’t last long in Carolina. He was cut nine games into last season.

While Gaulden isn’t the greatest athlete the Panthers have ever drafted, he’s not alone in his sentiments towards Fewell. If you’ll recall, Jalen Ramsey warned Carolina’s DBs in a tweet when he was first hired.

Ramsey was later traded to the Rams, Gaulden got signed by the Giants, and Fewell has now has taken a new position overseeing the NFL’s officials. He has been replaced by Jason Simmons, formerly of the Packers.

Matt Rhule has his work cut out for him.

Giants sign DB Rashaan Gaulden off practice squad

The New York Giants have signed defensive back Rashaan Gaulden off of their practice squad.

The New York Giants made a series of roster moves on Tuesday, including placing tight end Evan Engram on season-ending injured reserve, but remained one player short on their 53-man roster after the shuffling had concluded.

That additional spot was created last week when the team parted ways with veteran cornerback Janoris Jenkins after he used a term one Twitter that some perceived to be offensive.

On Wednesday morning, ahead of their first Week 16 practice, the Giants closed that gap by signing defensive back Rashaan Gaulden off of their practice squad.

Per the team release:

Gaulden, 6-1 and 200 pounds, played in 24 games in two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, including nine this year, most recently on Nov. 24 at New Orleans. He was released the following day.

Gaulden was credited with 14 tackles (10 solo) and returned one punt for the Panthers. He was a 2018 third-round draft choice (85th overall) by Carolina, from the University of Tennessee.

With an open spot on their practice squad, the Giants signed defensive end Kevin Wilkins (6-foot-2, 304 pounds), who played at Rutgers before joining the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted rookie free agent.

Giants add DB Rashaan Gaulden to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed DB Rashaan Gaulden to their practice squad and lost OL Evan Brown to the Miami Dolphins.

The New York Giants added defensive back Rashaan Gaulden to their practice squad on Wednesday. Gaulden fills the void left by the promotion of long snapper Colin Holba to the active roster last week. Holba served as the team’s long snapper in their 31-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Gaulden (6-foot-1, 200 pounds), as per the Giants:

“Played in 24 games in two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, including nine games this season. He was released on Nov. 25….Gaulden was credited with 14 tackles (10 solo) and returned one punt for the Panthers. He was a 2018 third-round draft choice (85th overall) by Carolina, from the University of Tennessee.”

Another Panther joins the fold here with the Giants. Many fans are interested if the Giants will be seeking the services of Ron Rivera this offseason. Rivera was fired by the Panthers this week after almost nine seasons as head coach.

Gaulden is the third defensive back on the practice squad, joining cornerback Derrick Baity and safety Sean Chandler.

Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins signed offensive lineman Evan Brown off of the Giants’ practice squad to their 53-man roster.

Rashaan Gaulden waived by Panthers

Rashaan Gaulden waived by Panthers.

CHARLOTTE — Former University of Tennessee defensive back Rashaan Gaulden was put on waivers Monday by the Carolina Panthers after a rough outing in the teams 34-31 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Gaulden, a defensive back and third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, had played sparingly in 2019.

And he won’t soon forget his last game in a Carolina uniform.

He ran into teammate D.J. Moore on a kick return causing Moore to fumble and New Orleans recovered.

Gaulden, who played mostly on special teams in 2019, was also flagged for a personal foul after being in a scuffle with a Saints player.

In his brief career with the Panthers, Gaulden appeared in 24 games. He made 18 tackles, including just four this season.

Panthers cut DB Rashaan Gaulden after Saints loss

The Carolina Panthers released defensive back Rashaan Gaulden, their third-round pick in the 2018 draft. The Panthers announced his release on Monday; it followed a rough day against the New Orleans Saints in which Gaulden ran into teammate D.J. Moore on a punt return, disrupting the catch and giving the ball back to New Orleans. He later started a brief fight after a kickoff return by shoving Saints safety Justin Hardee to the ground after the whistle.

These mistakes were the latest in a series of problems Gaulden has had this year, per a report from The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue. Gaulden at one point walked out of practice and did not travel with the team to a road game against the Arizona Cardinals. At the end of the day, his growing list of unforced errors and lacking discipline became too much for Panthers coach Ron Rivera to put up with.

It’s not the first time a bad outing against the Saints made an opposing team show a defensive back the door. The Houston Texans released cornerback Aaron Colvin after Saints quarterback Drew Brees victimized him in an end-of-game sequence to set up a last-second Wil Lutz field goal (sound familiar?). It’s just further proof that opponents need to be on top of their game when facing New Orleans, because the Saints won’t hesitate to take advantage of players who can’t keep a cool head.

Panthers release DB Rashaan Gaulden

The Panthers waived the second-year defensive back on Monday.

[jwplayer 32rDCp7e-ThvAeFxT]

The Panthers have released defensive back Rashaan Gaulden after an awful game against the Saints, the team announced Monday.

Gaulden ran into D.J. Moore on a punt return, which led to a fumble and a recovery by New Orleans. That mistake helped put Carolina in a 14-0 hole. Later, Gaulden committed a boneheaded penalty on special teams by shoving a Saints player long after the whistle had blown.

Mental errors are hard enough for any NFL player to overcome. In the end, Gaulden’s lack of athleticism and discipline made it impossible.

No corresponding roster move has been announced as of yet.
