Chiefs TE Travis Kelce shows support for teammate Kadarius Toney

Kansas City #Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce showed support for Kadarius Toney during comments to the media this week.

The countdown to Super Bowl LVIII is underway as the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers head into the bye week before their February 11th showdown. The drama surrounding the status of wide receiver Kadarius Toney is still up in the air following his expletive-heavy rant on Instagram before the AFC Championship game.

Toney was notably comforted by tight end Travis Kelce following his last game played on Week 15 against the New England Patriots. During Friday’s press conference, Kelce opened up about his recent conversations with Toney.

“I want him to know it’s always love in this building, and I know guys go through things both in this building and in their personal lives,” said Kelce. “He just had a baby girl, a beautiful baby girl, so shout out to Kadarius for that one, but I think you know what’s real is what happens in this building and how we can channel that, and I just wanted to make sure he knew that we were all still behind him and ready to go get this Super Bowl.”

There hasn’t been much indication as to whether or not Toney will be available for Super Bowl LVIII. The positive sign from the team facility indicated by Kelce is that there is plenty of support for the third-year player to turn things around and contribute to the team moving forward.

Twitter reacts to Kadarius Toney’s expletive-ridden rant about injury status

Twitter users were quick to make their voices heard about #Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney’s expletive-ridden rant about his injury status on Sunday.

Kadarius Toney won’t be participating in the Kansas City Chiefs’ matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday, but he gave fans plenty to talk about with an expletive-ridden post he made on social media before kickoff.

Toney, who welcomed a child into the world on Saturday, took to Instagram Live to tell fans that the Chiefs are lying about his injury status.

Check out his profane rant below, but be warned: the graphic nature of his language isn’t suitable for all audiences.

At this juncture, it is hard to tell whether Toney’s assertions are being made in good faith, or if he is merely frustrated by his status as a no-go for Sunday’s game. The Chiefs could be punished by the NFL if they are lying about their injury report but the team made it clear that Toney’s status for the game was impacted by a “personal” matter, ostensibly the birth of his child.

Fans on Twitter were quick to respond to Toney’s accusation against his team and had a variety of responses to the bizarre situation.

Happy 15th anniversary, college football fans and Mike Gundy

What is your favorite football coach rant of all-time?

15 years ago today wasn’t a particularly memorable day if you’re a Notre Dame fan as the 2007 Fighting Irish squad was beat up by Michigan State 31-14 and fell to 0-4 for the first time in program history.  That team was bad, it got worse before it got better, and ultimately finished 3-9.

On that day however it wasn’t [autotag]Charlie Weis[/autotag] who went on a legendary postgame rant that still gets played on countless sports radio shows to this day.  It was instead a young head coach by the name of [autotag]Mike Gundy[/autotag] who met the media following a shootout victory over Big 12 rival Texas Tech.

The rest as they say is history.

I’m not sure how many of us thought Gundy, who improved to just 13-15 as Oklahoma State’s head coach on this day, would still be leading the Cowboys by the time he was 55, but having led Oklahoma State to 16-straight bowl games and a Fiesta Bowl victory over Notre Dame a year ago, it certainly doesn’t appear that he’ll be slowing down anytime soon.

Tristan Thompson made a pretty great point about playing in the NBA during his NSFW rant

Points were made.

The Sacramento Kings have been one of the more disappointing teams in the NBA so far this season.

They’re off to a 6-9 start and are just outside of the play-in range behind the Oklahoma City Thunder (!!!!) and Memphis Grizzlies. And, look, it’s still early. But being behind the Thunder in anything is not a great look for any team. That’s why Luke Walton is on the hot seat now.

Things got worse for the Kings on Wednesday night when the team lost 107-97 to the Timberwolves.

Tristan Thompson was asked about the team’s effort and whether they needed to be more motivated by Walton after the loss. He teed off on a NSFW rant that…he actually made some pretty good points in.

He says it’s not about Walton. It’s not his job to get players ready to play — they should already be ready.

“It’s not about coach Walton inspiring you…You’ve got to be ready to play. Your number is called, you’re in the damn game. I don’t need to f****** coach to inspire me. Never that, never have, never will. The day I need a coach to inspire me is the day I’m retiring. I’ll go play with my kids in the park.”

Sheesh. Well, clearly, points were made here.

Thompson is right. Needing a coach for inspiration sounds good, but at the end of the day these are professional basketball players playing at the highest level. It’s not about inspiration at that point — it’s about execution.

If people want to blame Walton for something, blame him for his system. Blame him for the X’s and O’s not playing out how they should.

But inspiration? That’s not on him. That’s on the player, as Thompson said in more than a few colorful words. Walton shouldn’t be blamed for that.
