Trinity Rodman glad to get USWNT roster shout-out from ‘Uncle Shaq’

What connection could a USWNT forward have to an NBA legend?

Even U.S. women’s national team players lean on a family connection every now and then.

U.S. Soccer pulled out all the stops in a roster announcement hype video, getting President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden to introduce what turned out to be a list of mostly non-soccer celebrities to congratulate each player for making the squad.

The connections varied, with Alex Morgan getting a shout-out from her friend Taylor Swift, while one Megan (Rapinoe) got a message from another (Thee Stallion). College connections and shared home states, came up more than once, but in some cases the link was a little more personal.

Trinity Rodman, for one, has known the big name chosen to help announce to the world that she was going to her first World Cup for a long time.

“Mine was cool. Uncle Shaq,” joked Rodman while speaking to reporters on Thursday about Shaquille O’Neal, the famously tall former NBA legend and friend of the family through her father, former Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman. “Obviously Shaq and my dad were friends and stuff, and he saw me at a really young age… It was awesome. And he’s super cool.”

There may have been more degrees of separation for Andi Sullivan and actor Rainn Wilson, but the link wouldn’t have happened without someone close to the Washington Spirit midfielder.

“I love The Office. I also just found out that my husband was involved in the suggestion of that,” explained Sullivan, whose husband Drew Skundrich plays for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks of the USL Championship. “When I told him about it, I was like ‘oh my gosh, they know me so well,’ and he was like, ‘no, Andi, I know you so well.’ So, I love that so much, and I love Rainn Wilson.”

One of the most time honored traditions for the Seattle Seahawks has been the ceremonial raising of the 12th Man Flag in the south endzone. An honor usually given to former players, veterans, prominent Seattle athletes or pop culture figures.

On Sunday afternoon against the Jets, the latter will be doing so when Seattle’s own Rainn Wilson will be doing the honors. An actor, producer, writer and comedian, Rainn Wilson is a born and raised Seattle local, and a known Seattle sports super fan.

Wilson is easily best known for his role as Dwight K. Schrute in the popular comedy series “The Office” but has been active in a number of projects in both film, television, and his own media company.

Rainn Wilson is a beloved figure in the Seattle community, and will surely receive a warm response from the 12th Man as he is truly one of their own.

Dwight Schrute actor likes idea of Seahawks trading for Baker Mayfield

Hoping Mayfield becomes the Jim to his Dwight, Rainn Wilson (a huge Seahawks fan) is all for Seattle trading for the Browns QB:

Sports and pop culture tend to interact quite often in a variety of ways. Whether it is Super Bowl halftime shows, commercials or just parties from both walks of life engaging with each other, it is often fun to see the interactions.

A couple of seasons ago, we saw this with Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield who was making pop culture references throughout his interviews. Whether it was music, movies or television shows, Mayfield was able to artfully get his references in.

One of the pop culture references was from the hit TV show “The Office.” A favorite for many and cringe-inducing for others, the show was very quotable:

With a report popping up that the Seattle Seahawks have interest in trading for Mayfield, the actor who played the character quoted in the video above approved of the potential move:

The actor, Rainn Wilson, is a huge Seahawks fan while the character, Dwight Schrute, is a beet farmer who is always getting pranks pulled on him.

While the first season of “The Office” was, at times, difficult to watch, the series got better as it went. Mayfield is hoping that his stint in Cleveland will be like the first few episodes of “The Office” and his career, like the show, takes off from there.

Wilson/Schrute approves.

Josh Allen makes perfect ‘Office’ joke after Rainn Wilson complimented him

Josh Allen had a Dwight Schrute joke fans of The Office will love.

For the second time this week, The Office character Dwight Schrute was referenced in the NFL.

The first instance was Sunday when the Cleveland Browns beat the Tennessee Titans, and quarterback Baker Mayfield was asked about his improvement this season after throwing four touchdowns against the Titans. He responded by quoting Dwight — played by Rainn Wilson — and said: “Whenever I’m about to do something, I think: ‘Would an idiot do that?’ And if they would, then I don’t do that.”

Then it was Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s turn.

Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers, Allen led his team to a 34-24 victory, going 32-for-40 for 375 yards and four touchdowns. It was an impressive performance, and it caught the attention of Wilson, who will forever be associated with Dwight Schrute.

He praised Allen, calling him his second favorite quarterback. (Wilson is a huge Seattle Seahawks fan, so presumably, Russell Wilson is his favorite quarterback.)

And, well, Allen found the perfect way to respond with a funny dig at Dwight – one that fans of The Office will love.

The long-running joke on The Office was that Dwight was always second to Michael Scott (Steve Carell) in the office’s hierarchy. But he wasn’t Assistant Regional Manager, as he liked to think. He was Assistant to the Regional Manager, as Michael and Jim regularly reminded him.
