Chiefs open as 9.5-point favorites over Raiders in Week 13

The Kansas City Chiefs open as big favorites against AFC West rival Oakland Raiders.

The Kansas City Chiefs (7-4) will play the Oakland Raiders (6-5) at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 13.

The Chiefs are fresh and rested off of a bye week. The Raiders, however, are still coming to grips with an ugly loss against the New York Jets in Week 12. Oddsmakers are showing a lack of confidence in Oakland and seem to be betting on Andy Reid’s tremendous 17-3 career record after the bye week.

[lawrence-related id=42690]

According to BetMGM, the Chiefs are 9.5-point favorites heading into Sunday’s game. The opening money line is at -455 for Kansas City and +330 for Oakland. The opening over/under point total rests at 52 points.

The Raiders looked completely unprepared against the Jets in Week 12. They failed to score a touchdown during the game and lost the game by 31 points. Quarterback Derek Carr was benched in the fourth quarter of the game for his poor performance. While they’re chalking it up to an “Any Given Sunday” type of situation, the Silver and Black have real problems that they need to address if they want to reach the playoffs. The loss of Hunter Renfrow certainly won’t help the offensive woes that seem to currently plague Oakland.

The Chiefs have dominated AFC West opponents over the course of the last four seasons. They have a 19-2 record against opponents within the division during that span. Add in the extra time to prepare from the bye week for Kansas City and playing at Arrowhead Stadium — where Carr has a 0-for-5 record during his career — things look extra challenging for the Raiders this week.

Raiders QB Derek Carr fails to inspire confidence heading into Week 13 vs. Chiefs

Carr’s Week 12 performance saw him benched and his words following the game were equally uninspiring.

The Oakland Raiders struggled mightily against the New York Jets in Week 12.

It was a bad performance on both ends. They saw struggles on defense — failing to keep the Jets out of the endzone in the third quarter. It was even worse on the offensive side of the ball. QB Derek Carr was unable to get anything going, converting just five of their 15 attempts on third down.

Carr finished the day throwing for less than 130 yards with one interception. He threw the last touchdown of the game, but it wasn’t to his own team. Nickel corner Brian Poole caught an interception one-handed and returned it for a touchdown. Carr had just one more series for the Raiders, and after a three-and-out, Jon Gruden opted to replace Carr with backup QB Mike Glennon.

After the game, Gruden defended his decision to pull Carr out of the game saying he had the best interests of the football team in mind. Carr claimed that he was pulled from the game for other reasons, but it was quite clear that his performance was the one and only reason.

With New York in the rear-view, Oakland’s quarterback shifted his focus after the game to Week 13 and the Kansas City Chiefs. He was asked about whether the team would be prepared for the critical AFC West matchup.

“We better show up or they’re going to beat us by 50,” Carr said. “That’s a really good football team — one of the best in the NFL. Hopefully our guys, myself included, when we show up to Arrowhead we’re ready to go and I believe that we will be.”

It’s not exactly the most shining vote of confidence from the Raiders quarterback. Carr added that no one was hanging their heads after the loss, but an entirely different challenge awaits. Oakland is heading to Arrowhead Stadium to face a bitter rival and they’re in a bad way. There is now a rather large shadow of doubt following around Oakland’s offensive leader heading into a pivotal AFC West matchup. The Chiefs, on the other hand, are coming off the bye and with blood in the water — they should be circling a battered Raiders team like hungry sharks.

Chiefs remain atop AFC West standings following Week 12

The Kansas City Chiefs remain on top after the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos lost their matchups in Week 12.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers both had bye weeks during Week 12. Both the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos played opponents in the AFC and the results didn’t end up too great for either team. The Raiders suffered a 34-3 loss to the New York Jets, and the Broncos fell to the Buffalo Bills by a score of 20-3. The AFC West scored a combined six points in Week 12.

While Week 12 hasn’t ended quite yet, all of the AFC West teams have played their games already. Here’s a look at the standings in the division through the twelve weeks of play:

Place Record Team Next Opponent
1 7-4 Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders
2 6-5 Oakland Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs
3 4-7 Los Angeles Chargers at Denver Broncos
4 3-8 Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles

Week 13 will be a unique week in that each of the teams in the AFC West plays another division opponent. Oakland will go to Kansas City and Los Angeles will travel to Denver.

The Chiefs have a 1.5 game lead over the Raiders heading into Week 13. The story could have been a whole lot different had Oakland won against the Jets. A Week 13 win would only tie things up in the division rather than giving Oakland a lead. Instead of coming into a division rivalry game hot, the Raiders will now be trying to get back on track in Kansas City. It’ll be a tough one given Andy Reid’s tremendous 17-3 career record coming off of the bye week.

The Broncos and Chargers are both playing for draft positioning at this point. Neither team has much of shot at making the playoffs even if they won out the remainder of the season. If Denver gets the win on their home turf they’ll tie things up in the AFC West standings with Los Angeles.

Following Week 12, the Chiefs sit in the driver’s seat to bring home a fourth consecutive AFC West title. It’ll be the first time they’ve won four in a row in franchise history. That’s about the best outcome you could possibly ask for, especially when your team didn’t play a football game this week.

Broncos at Bills – noon CT

The Denver Broncos have done a very poor job of closing out games this season. Right now, the Broncos are playing for next season, trying to find some success to propel them into the offseason. They’ll look to get back on track against the Buffalo Bills and play spoiler to their AFC playoff hopes.

The Bills are probably one of the surprise success stories of this season. They’re a confusing team because at one point it looked like they might be able to hang with the Patriots. Since then they have losses to the struggling Eagles and the Browns. They’re in the thick of the AFC playoff race and could challenge the Chiefs for seeding. This is one where you have a free pass to root for the Broncos.

Prediction

Raiders 31, Jets 27

Moneyline (?)

The RAIDERS (-167) hit the road, and they’ll be able to hold off the Jets in this one. They just have more horses on offense. The Jets (+140) are at home, and their offense has come alive, but their defense continues to struggle.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the moneyline returns a $6.00 profit with an Oakland victory.

Against the Spread (?)

The RAIDERS (-2.5, -110) are 2-0 straight up/1-1 against the spread in two games as a favorite this season. The Jets (+2.5, -110) have covered their past two as underdogs, winning both games straight up. They’re 2-3 SU/ATS in five games at home, however, and the Raiders pass offense will be too much for the Jets in this one.

Over/Under (?)

The OVER 46.5 (-110) is worth a moderate bet, as neither of these pass defenses are particularly strong, and the two passing offenses have been able to have their way lately. This number seems rather low, all things considered.

Raiders move into 6th seed with Colts’ loss on Thursday night

Raiders move into 6th seed with Colts’ loss to Texans on Thursday night in Week 12.

[jwplayer yul3njKB-ThvAeFxT]

If the Raiders are going to make the playoffs in the AFC, they are likely going to need to get to 10 wins. Sitting at 6-4, the team has a relatively soft schedule the rest of the way, starting with the Jets in Week 12. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t root for some help from their competition.

Oakland received some help already this week with Colts falling to the Texans on Thursday night. With that loss, the Raiders have slid into the No. 6 seed, ahead of the Colts, Steelers and Titans.

Indianapolis now sits with a record of 6-5, with the Raiders owning the head-to-head tiebreaker. That could prove to be very helpful as we get into potential playoff scenarios later in the season.

How likely is it that the Raiders will make the playoffs? With last night’s loss by the Colts, Oakland’s odds have improved to 46 percent via the New York Times playoff simulator. With a win on Sunday, their odds move up to 60 percent and can improve even further with a Steelers or Bills loss.

The Raiders just need to handle their own business on Sunday, but it doesn’t hurt to get some help as well.

AFC Playoff Picture entering Week 12

The AFC playoff picture features the Ravens, Patriots, Chiefs, and Colts as division leaders heading into Week 12

We didn’t learn much about the AFC playoff picture this week. The Ravens and Patriots seem like the cream of the crop in the AFC. Both those teams are poised to secure byes and the only thing in doubt is whether Baltimore or New England will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Texans are flawed and are in a battle with the Colts for the AFC South. The Chiefs should win the AFC West. The wild cards will be a battle between the loser of the Texans-Colts battle, the Buffalo Bills, the Oakland Raiders, and maybe the Steelers or the Browns. Yes, somehow the Browns are still alive, folks.

Credit: Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

AFC East

New England Patriots 9-1

The Patriots have one concern: their offense. The New England defense can’t keep bailing out the other side of the football. That hasn’t been the case for a long time in New England. The good news for the reigning Super Bowl champion is that they only play one very good defense the rest of the schedule. The Cowboys should be a good defense but haven’t really shown it on the field. The Texans and Chiefs can be scored upon. There’s probably two losses left on the schedule, but 13 wins should be enough to get the top seed unless the Ravens continue to dominate opponents.

Remaining Schedule: Cowboys, @Texans, Chiefs, @Bengals, Bills, Dolphins

Buffalo Bills 7-3

The Bills need to beat the Broncos or their playoff hopes are in deep trouble. The four games after Week 12 are in tough situations where they play the Cowboys, Steelers, and Patriots away and have to try and stop the Ravenswhich doesn’t look possible right now. What looked like an easy path to the playoffs now looks a little scary.

Remaining Schedule: Broncos, @Cowboys, Ravens, @Steelers, @Patriots, Jets

NFL announces schedule change for Chiefs-Raiders Week 13 game

You’ll now get to watch this AFC West showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders on Sunday afternoon.

[jwplayer HusgRpqi-ThvAeFxT]

The NFL has announced another schedule change for Week 13. This time, the change impacts the Dec. 1 game at Arrowhead Stadium between the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The AFC West divisional matchup between these two rivals has been moved from its original time of noon CT to 3:25 p.m. on CBS. In a corresponding move, the game between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers was flexed to noon CT.

Kansas City and Oakland’s game is shaping up to be one that has significant playoff implications in the AFC West race. The NFL wants to get as many eyes as possible on that game, so a change to the afternoon slot makes plenty of sense. New England Patriots vs. Houston Texans will remain the Sunday night game for Week 13.

The Chiefs will be well-rested heading into that game after a Week 12 bye. The Raiders will have spent Week 12 on the road facing the 3-7 New York Jets. Of course, Kansas City also has an important AFC West division matchup tonight against the Los Angeles Chargers in Mexico City. Winning that game would give the Chiefs a half-game advantage over the Raiders entering Week 12.

Games to watch for Chiefs fans in Week 11

Pay attention to these games during Week 11 of the 2019 season if you’re a Chiefs fan.

The Kansas City Chiefs will play during Monday Night Football in Week 11.

That means you can spend your entire football Sunday watching other games across the league. As the end of the season gets closer, you’ll want to keep a closer eye on the AFC West and the rest of the AFC. You can check out the box scores or watch the RedZone Channel on your Fubo.tv account (try it for free).

Texans at Ravens – noon CT

The most important reason to watch this football game is because it’s likely to be one of the best of the regular season. You’ve got two high-powered AFC offenses going toe-to-toe with some big-time implications in the AFC playoff picture. That last part is also important for Kansas City Chiefs fans.

If the Ravens lose, it puts the Chiefs one game closer to the No. 2 seed again. On the other hand, if the Texans lose it also helps Kansas City because they hold a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Chiefs. Could the football gods bless the Chiefs with a draw in this game? Probably not.
