How the Dolphins can beat the Bengals on Thursday Night Football

A gameplan for Miami to move to 4-0.

Thursday is game day for the Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals in an early-season AFC battle. The 3-0 Dolphins traveled to Ohio and held a walk-through at the University of Cincinnati Wednesday, which was actually recorded play-by-play by an amateur with a Twitter account.

Spygate 2.0 aside, the Dolphins put their five-game primetime winning streak and unblemished 2022 record on the line tonight, as they look for their third straight win against the Bengals over the last four seasons.

Heading into the game, the Dolphins have a number of key players listed as questionable, including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (back/ankle), who’s not dealing with a head injury. The other Dolphins with that questionable designation are left tackle Terron Armstead (toe) cornerback Xavien Howard (groin/glute), safety Brandon Jones (chest), defensive tackle Raekwon Davis (knee) and wide receivers Jaylen Waddle (groin) and Cedrick Wilson Jr. (ribs/toe).

Despite the pending announcement around 90 minutes prior to the 8:15 kickoff, here are the five ways Miami can beat Cincinnati on Thursday night.

49ers re-sign RB Jeff Wilson Jr. to 1-year deal

The 49ers will keep their leading rusher from last season. Jeff Wilson Jr. was due to hit free agency before signing a 1-year deal.

Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. was a bright spot for the 49ers in an otherwise dismal 2020 campaign. San Francisco on Tuesday announced Wilson, who was set to be a restricted free agent, will return to the club next season on a one-year deal.

Wilson began his career as an undrafted rookie with the 49ers in 2018. Injuries during his first season pushed him from the practice squad to the active roster, and his hard-nosed running style earned him a couple starts in the six games he played.

His role in 2019 became more limited after Tevin Coleman signed and Raheem Mostert emerged as the team’s top running back, but Wilson still saw some success as a short-yardage back in 10 games.

Last season he broke out in his second chance at being a lead back. Wilson last season led the 49ers in rushing yards with 600, rushing touchdowns with seven, and total touchdowns with 10. He started three of his 12 games and posted career-highs across the board.

By signing Wilson to a deal now, San Francisco avoids a team making an offer they’d be forced to match to retain the running back in restricted free agency.

With Jerick McKinnon likely on his way out and Coleman due to hit the free agent market, Wilson looks to be in line for a substantial role next season alongside Raheem Mostert in the 49ers backfield.

Derrius Guice up for FedEx Ground Player of the Week

Guice had a career day on Sunday with 129 yards and two touchdowns in Washington’s win, and he’s nominated for the player of the week.

After his career performance on Sunday, Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice is up for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week. Guice was nominated for the award after rushing for 129 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries during Sunday’s 29-21 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

Unfortunately for Guice, his monster day came during an NFL slate where two other RBs put up eye-popping stats as well — Tennessee’s Derrick Henry had 149 yards and 1 touchdown, and San Francisco’s Raheem Moster had 146 yards and 1 touchdown. However, neither of those players accumulated those stats on just 10 carries, and neither were playing in their fourth career game.

The winner will be announced later this week, and if Guice wins, it will hopefully be the first of many Player of the Week awards that he will rack up in his career.
