Rafael Fiziev out of UFC 272 because of COVID-19; replacement sought for Rafael dos Anjos

Just six days out, and UFC 272 has lost its co-main event.

Rising UFC lightweight contender [autotag]Rafael Fiziev[/autotag] won’t be competing this weekend at UFC 272.

Fiziev has been forced to withdraw from his bout against former champion [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag], which was scheduled as the co-main event Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Fiziev tested positive for COVID-19 and is experiencing symptoms.

Fiziev (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) confirmed he was out on Twitter after Ariel Helwani broke the news Monday.

“I’m devastated to announce that I’m out of the fight,” Fiziev wrote. “I had a great camp and was ready to put on the show, I flew all the way to Vegas from Thailand just to get sick with covid, for 3 days I’m in hotel bed with fever, bones pain and cough.

“I called out RDA and I still want that fight when my health will allow me to compete again. Apologies to him, but saying that I was faking it is complete nonsense. Time will put everything in place”

The UFC is currently trying to keep dos Anjos (31-13 MMA, 19-11 UFC) on the card and in search of a short-notice replacement.

Renato Moicano’s management informed MMA Junkie’s Nolan King that the Brazilian is interested in stepping in on short notice and has let the UFC know about his interest. Moicano last fought Feb. 12 at UFC 271, submitting Alexander Hernandez in the second round.

Dos Anjos indicated during his appearance on “The MMA Hour” that he’s willing to fight somebody on short notice.

“I’m always ready to fight anybody. Paul Felder was a last-minute replacement for Islam on fight wee, as well,” dos Anjos said. “… I’m a fighter. I know I have to be careful with the fights that I take, that I pick right now because at this stage of my career a loss is not going to be good right now. It’s my third title run, but I’m a fighter, and I’m always ready for anybody.”

Dos Anjos hasn’t competed since beating Felder, who took the fight on five days’ notice, in November 2020.

UFC 272 ‘Embedded,’ No. 1: Colby Covington, ‘the reflection of perfection’

Go behind the scenes with the big-name fighters of UFC 272 for the first time during fight week.

The UFC returns to Las Vegas on Saturday for its third pay-per-view of the year with UFC 272, which means the “Embedded” fight-week video series is back to document what’s happening behind the scenes.

UFC 272 takes place at T-Mobile Arena. The main card streams on ESPN+ pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

UFC 272 features a welterweight grudge match at the top of the bill as former best friends [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] and [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] square off in the night’s headliner. And in the co-main event, former lightweight champion [autotag]Rafael dos Ajos[/autotag] takes on [autotag]Rafael Fiziev[/autotag] in a key matchup at 155 pounds.

The first episode of “Embedded” follows the featured fighters while they get ready for fight week. Here is the UFC’s description of the episode from YouTube:

“Bryce Mitchell tends to his farm. Colby Covington takes his upcoming bout personally. Rafael dos Anjos unwinds at a shooting range. Jorge Masvidal deplanes and onewheels in Las Vegas. UFC 272 is on Saturday, March 5.”

But here at MMA Junkie, we’ve got your back.

Here are the fight announcements that were broken or confirmed by MMA Junkie from Feb. 7-13.

Visa issues shift Rafael dos Anjos vs. Rafael Fiziev to UFC 272 co-main event

Just eight days out from UFC Fight Night 201, Rafael dos Anjos vs. Rafael Fiziev has been pulled as the main event and moved to UFC 272.

The UFC Fight Night 201 main event is off just eight days out from the event.

Issues pertaining to [autotag]Rafael Fiziev[/autotag]’s travel visa have prevented him from meeting former champ [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] in the Feb. 26 lightweight headliner, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on ESPN+.

The situation won’t cancel the bout entirely, though. The promotion has already made plans to reschedule dos Anjos (31-13 MMA, 19-11 UFC) vs. Fiziev (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) as the co-main event for UFC 272 on March 5, with five rounds remaining in tact.

MMA Junkie verified the changes with a person close to the situation following an initial report from MMA journalist Ariel Helwani. The person requested anonymity because the UFC has yet to make an official announcement.

It’s unknown at this time which fight will replace dos Anjos vs. Fiziev as the UFC Fight Night 201 main event. A light heavyweight bout between Jamahal Hill and Johnny Walker is the current co-headliner.

Fiziev is enjoying a very successful stretch in his career. The muay-Thai specialist is on a five-fight winning streak, which includes notable wins over Renato Moicano, Bobby Green and, most recently, Brad Riddell. Fiziev’s lone professional MMA defeat came in his UFC debut back in 2019 to the hands of Magomed Mustafaev.

On the other hand, ex-UFC lightweight champion dos Anjos looks to stay in the win column since dropping back down to 155 pounds following an eight-fight run at welterweight. The Brazilian returned to the lightweight division in November 2020, defeating Paul Felder by decision. Prior to that, dos Anjos was mired in a 1-4 stretch at welterweight.

UFC 272 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with a main card that airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.

  • Colby Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal – five-round fight

Rafael Fiziev ‘didn’t like many moments’ in UFC on ESPN 31 bout, including TKOing a friend

The knockout was incredible, but Rafael Fiziev sees defects in the victory.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Rafael Fiziev[/autotag]’s UFC latest performance wooed the small crowd in attendance at the UFC Apex and wowed thousands watching around the world, but there are some things about it he just didn’t enjoy, himself.

Though it was capped off by an athletic and powerful spinning wheel kick knockout, Fiziev (11-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) didn’t bask in the glory for too long at the UFC on ESPN 31 post-fight news conference. He admitted it was a great highlight, but defeating a friend, [autotag]Brad Riddell[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC), who he’s trained with in the past, was a difficult pill to swallow.

“It feels amazing,” Fiziev told MMA Junkie. “What I can say? What I can say? I just don’t know if I’m sad or I’m happy because it’s not so good when you (defeat) your friend like that, you know? It’s just this. Of course, I’m happy inside. I don’t know. … It was a beautiful KO or TKO. It was beautiful, but I still didn’t want the fight (yet). I still didn’t like many moments in the fight. I still need growing. I still need work.”

With the victory, Fiziev won a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus and extended his winning streak to five, with two knockout finishes in the stretch. Despite his affinity for violence and success in the cage, Fiziev revealed he never seeks specifically for a finish.

“I never find knockout in my fights,” Fiziev said. “I never try to make a knockout. I never believe in this before a fight. I waited for his damage and I (took) it. I go to my kitchen today and I’ll try to cook something.”

UFC on ESPN 31 took place Saturday, airing on ESPN and streaming on ESPN+.

UFC on ESPN 31 video: Rafael Fiziev’s slick wheel kick leads to TKO of Brad Riddell

Rafael Fiziev stopped Brad Riddell with the 13th wheel kick finish in UFC history in the UFC on ESPN 31 co-main event.

The matchup of former training partners and friends went the way of [autotag]Rafael Fiziev[/autotag] on Saturday with a win over [autotag]Brad Riddell[/autotag] in the UFC on ESPN 31 co-main event.

After spending time training together in Thailand roughly four years ago, the streaking lightweights were paired up to see who would take the next step forward in the bout, which took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

It was competitive up until the finish, when Fiziev (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) uncorked a slick wheel kick that rocked Riddell (10-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and led to the TKO at the 2:20 mark of Round 3.

Check out the highlight of the finish below (via Twitter):

The first round went as expected. Fiziev and Riddell stood in front of each other and produced tactical striking. They traded punches and kicks, but the familiarity between the two was clear as they both avoided any big shots. Fiziev was on point with his counters, tagging Riddell on his exits.

It was more of the same in Round 2, as it was all striking from beginning to end. Fiziev landed a nasty elbow in the early stages of the round that opened a gnarly cut around Riddell’s left eye. Riddell maintained his focus and turned up the output in response, but Fiziev controlled the pace of the fight and remained consistent with his offense.

The cageside doctor took a close look at Riddell’s eye between rounds, and threatened to stop it if is got any worse.

Riddell was clearly aware of that danger, as he shot for a takedown early in Round 3. He briefly got Fiziev to the ground, but Fiziev scrambled up to his feet and it was right back to the striking exchanges. The fight was going down the wire when Fiziev landed the 13th wheel kick finish in UFC history.

“I love him – I learn from him,” Fiziev said of Riddell in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “I wait (for this strike) – I wait three rounds. I not turn because I know when he goes this way his hands go down and he forget about spinning back kicks.”

Ridell was stopped by strikes for the first time in MMA competition with the defeat, while Fiziev has now won five straight, which is good for the fourth longest active winning streak at 155 pounds behind Charles Oliveira (nine), Islam Makhachev (nine) and Beneil Dariush (seven).

Brad Riddell on past training with friend Rafael Fiziev: ‘You can’t rely on some sh*t from four years ago’

Brad Riddell is downplaying the fact that he and his friend Rafael Fiziev used to spar.

[autotag]Brad Riddell[/autotag] is downplaying the fact he and his friend [autotag]Rafael Fiziev[/autotag] used to spar.

When Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 31 matchup between Riddell (10-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and Fiziev (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) was announced, many had a hard time believing it was actually happening since they had formed a friendship over the years training in Phuket, Thailand.

And while that’s true, Riddell explained he called Fiziev as soon as he was offered the fight to make sure they were on the same page. Fighting each other isn’t ideal, but Riddell says the UFC matched them up because they were the only ranked fighters available who were willing to compete before the end of the year.

“I used to bump into him a little bit in Phuket when he was down at Phuket Top Team,” Riddell told Submission Radio. “And then when I left my job, he took over. And then I think I was there for about a year or so while he was still coaching, and we trained together a bit and sparred and wrestled. Everyone seems to think that’s a massive deal. But I’ve trained with a few guys in that top 15, like Arman (Tsarukyan) and Damir (Ismagulov), Rafael, obviously Dan (Hooker). So it’s nothing too shocking from my point of view.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BabV4YWD35M/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

“Business. It’s just business. I want to make money to feed my kids, and he wants to make money to feed his kids. He wants to be the champ. So do I. So you just think about that instead of thinking about the fact that we’re mates – just think about it as like healthy competition. And in my opinion, he’s one of the best in the top 15, for sure, and so I want to test myself against him because, I mean, why would you not want to test yourself against the best people in the world? I think Raf’s one of the best for sure.”

With Riddell currently training at City Kickboxing and Fiziev at Sanford MMA, Riddell said his sparring sessions with Fiziev bear no weight in his eyes considering how much both men have transformed since then.

“It was like four or five years ago,” Riddell said. “He’s changed a lot since then, and I’ve changed a lot. I barely did MMA back then, so a whole heap’s changed for me. But I definitely don’t think I’ll rely on those sparring sessions too much. You change in like six months, three months in this sport. It evolves so quickly. You can’t rely on some sh*t from four years ago.

“I feel like we’re very similar. We’re very evenly matched sort of everywhere. I don’t think either of us stand out significantly above each other in any aspect of the sport. So I think it’s going to be a very even, interesting fight. It will be, I guess, who turns up on the night”

“From memory, obviously he’s hard to strike with. Even though he hasn’t wrestled much in the UFC, he’s a very good wrestler. He’s got some pretty good submissions up his sleeve and stuff like that. It’s hard to say, because I’m not going to talk sh*t about my mate. But it’s going to be a pretty epic fight. I think as excited as everybody is, they have good reason to be.”

Riddell (10-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) will take on Fiziev (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night on Dec. 4, expected at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Two people with knowledge of the booking informed MMA Junkie on Thursday but asked to remain anonymous as the UFC has yet to make an official announcement.
