WATCH: Texas QB Quinn Ewers hits WR Xavier Worthy for a 42-yard score

Ewers dropped a dime to Worthy to give Texas a 14-0 lead over Houston.

Texas started hot in the first half against the Houston Cougars. It looks as if the team improved significantly in sharpness over the bye week.

The Longhorns brought a far more consistent product to start the game. Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers delivered with a strong start on the day. In his first two drives, Ewers completed 9 of 10 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

The first touchdown went to Adonai Mitchell who created significant separation to secure the touchdown by the sideline boundary. The second touchdown was more impressive.

Ewers dropped into a clean pocket and delivered a beautiful 42-yard pass to Xavier Worthy over the talented wide receiver’s shoulder. After beating his man, Worthy caught the pass and finished the touchdown play.

We have noted the team’s struggles early in games, but there’s been no issue in scoring for the Longhorns early. The Texas coaching staff deserves credit for a stronger, sharper first half start.

Looking at Texas QB Quinn Ewers’ significant statistical improvement

Quinn Ewers has improved significantly since last season in several statistical categories.

Quinn Ewers is a much better quarterback for the Texas Longhorns this season. The proof is in the stat sheet, despite what might be many onlookers preconceived views of the Longhorns’ starting quarterback.

You can hear the complaints, unreasonable at that, from several fans after the first missed downfield throw of every game. Texas faithful might have made up their minds, but Ewers is a far more improved player than he is being credited as this season.

Let’s look at a few of the statistical categories in which Ewers is a far better quarterback than last season.

The former five-star recruit has improved his completion percentage from 58% last season to 66% in 2023. He had 2,177 passing yards last season in 10 games. He is now on pace for 3,259 passing yards over a 12-game span.

Last season, Ewers averaged 7.4 yards per attempt. He has increased that average to 9.2 yards per attempt. Ewers’ touchdown to interception ratio has increased from 5:2 to 10:1.

As of now the Texas signal caller is No. 13 in college football with a 82.9 QBR. His passer rating has increased from 132.6 to 164.7 since last season. In his last two games, Ewers has eclipsed a 70% completion rate.

Ewers even brings more in the running game this season. He has 25 carries for 74 yards and five touchdowns through five games. Sacks held him to -52 yards on 24 carries in 2022. The Texas starter had one rushing touchdown a year ago.

Quinn Ewers is a much better quarterback this season. He will look to continue his improved play against the No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday.

Why Texas QB Quinn Ewers holds the key to team success in 2023

If spring is any indication, Quinn Ewers will make these throws more consistently.

The 2023 college football season for Texas falls on Quinn Ewers’ improved consistency and development. That’s been a key theme of the offseason after mixed results for much of his first season in Austin.

On Friday we saw more outside perspective on the five-star talent. College football analyst Parker Fleming posted a clip of the quarterback and shared the following thought on Ewers.

“How much of Texas’ success this fall comes down to the simple question of ‘Can Quinn Ewers just hit the open guy?'”

Fleming then shared a telling clip from the Iowa State game that showed how off target the Longhorns signal caller was at times last season. Much was made of wide receiver Casey Cain’s drop against the Cyclones, but Cain wasn’t given much of a chance on this play.

On this missed opportunity, head coach Steve Sarkisian schemed Cain open with a mismatch on a slot fade. Despite having a wide open target, Ewers misfired on what was one of many errant throws on the season. The touchdown was there. Texas simply did not execute.

Fast forward to the 2023 offseason. Ewers is now hitting many of the throws he missed by wide margins. Even so, making those throws in games will be a much tougher task than in an Orange and White scrimmage.

The Southlake product appears locked in and more physically fit than he did last season. He appears to be a much improved passer. Now he’s got to prove it’s not simply a facade.

Texas Football: Reacting to a bold power ranking of Big 12 QB rooms

Texas ranks second among JD PicKell’s top five Big 12 QB rooms.

Jackson Arnold has transformed the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback room. That is, if On3 Sports analyst JD PicKell is to be believed.

PicKell ranked the Oklahoma quarterback room as the best in the Big 12 Conference as of Friday. The ranking is surprising given the Sooners quarterback debacle in last year’s 49-0 loss to Texas.

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel is a good quarterback. He’s not great or elite given his struggles to pass outside the numbers. Even so, one could argue he is one of the two or three best quarterbacks in the Big 12. After him is a still rebuilding quarterback unit. I shared my thoughts on the Oklahoma depth chart earlier this week.

The Longhorns check in at No. 2 on the list with Quinn Ewers, Arch Manning and Maalik Murphy. Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables would likely take any of the Longhorns three quarterbacks over the current backup Davis Beville. Certainly, Texas would relish the opportunity to face a freshman version of Jackson Arnold.

It will be interesting to see how much each quarterback room improves over the next season.

Texas Football: Coaching milestones for Steve Sarkisian’s staff in 2022

Let’s look at the coaching staff’s biggest accomplishments from the 2022 season.

The Texas Longhorns football program is not ahead of schedule. Critics would argue that based on their own standards, it isn’t even on schedule.

Despite outside noise, Steve Sarkisian and company have accomplished multiple milestones that past regimes failed to do consistently.

Texas flashed great football at times this season. For the most part, it’s fair to consider the 2022 group a good football team. The issue for Texas revolves around consistency.

At its best, Texas stood toe-to-toe with Alabama and buried its red river rival, Oklahoma. At its worst, the team blew double digit leads to lesser competition and no-showed in the biggest conference game of the season offensively.

All in all, there were still plenty of signs the program is moving in the right direction. Here are a few accomplishments made by the 2022 team.

Dynamic duo of backs carries Texas past Baylor, 38-27

Bijan and Roschon buried the Bears.

The Texas Longhorns defeated the Baylor Bears in heartwarming fashion on senior day. Its two biggest leaders had the biggest impact on the game.

Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson helped the Horns separate after seizing the lead.

To a chorus of fans chanting Bijan Robinson’s name, Texas utterly annihilated the Baylor defense in the second half.

Robinson finished with as many total yards as Blake Shapen (179), capping a memorable junior campaign.

Jaylan Ford was the story for the defense with the interception that would ultimately close the game.

All in all it was an impressive performance all around for Texas.

Quinn Ewers completed 12 of 16 passes for 194 yards. He was 7 for 8 for 83 yards in the second half.

Xavier Worthy caught seven passes for 62 yards, while JaTavion Sanders had 65 yards on two receptions.

Steve Sarkisian made huge adjustments taking a pair of one yard stop routes to Worthy when defenders gave too much space to receivers.

Texas won the second half 21-8 due in large part to adjustments by Pete Kwiatkowski and dominant running game.

Texas improves to 8-4 and will wait to see what happens with Kansas and Kansas State on Saturday night.

Black Friday: Five reasons Texas should defeat Baylor

Texas can finish 8-4 and push for a Big 12 title spot.

It’s a tough week to be a Baylor Bear. In recent weeks, the team has seen their conference title hopes disintegrate with consecutive home losses.

The week doesn’t get any easier for Baylor. They will now face a Texas team coming off its best performance of the season.

Texas didn’t get much from the passing game, but it didn’t matter much. The Longhorns ran for 427 yards against Kansas last week, led by Bijan Robinson’s 243-yard game. Jonathon Brooks broke 100 yards as well.

This year’s Baylor team will present new challenges for Texas as Blake Shapen has raised their offensive ceiling. Nevertheless, Steve Sarkisian should have a sizable talent advantage given what the Bears lost to the 2022 NFL Draft.

Here are five reasons Texas should beat Baylor on Friday.

Still Bijan: Social media reacts to Texas’ statement win over Kansas

Bijan Robinson put up video game numbers against Kansas.

It’s been a huge week for Texas Longhorns athletics. Usually that’s indicative of football success in November, but the basketball team has received much of the shine this week.

For the fourth time in school history, the Texas basketball team earned a win over a No. 2 team in the AP poll. Not to be outdone, Sarkisian’s squad mopped the field with Kansas to end the week.

Despite the return of once Heisman hopeful quarterback Jalon Daniels, the Jayhawks offense was missing in action on Saturday. A 14-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Torry Locklin gave Kansas its first points of the game with 1:55 remaining in the third quarter.

Bijan Robinson was the story for Texas. The generational player rushed for 243 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.

Let’s look at what Twitter users took away from Texas’ burial of Kansas.

FULL PREVIEW: Texas Longhorns (6-4) vs. Kansas Jayhawks (6-4)

Texas is due for more luck this week. Here’s who to watch for in this pivotal game.

The Texas Longhorns are once again in a must-win scenario on Saturday. More than for conference title standing, this game is about bolstering program perception after losing to Kansas last season.

The Kansas Jayhawks enter the game with a 6-4 record and bowl eligible for the first time since 2008. Given Lance Leipold’s culture changing success, players likely aren’t satisfied with simply playing football in December.

The next two games for the Jayhawks provide arguably the biggest opportunity to make a statement of their own. After Kansas faces Texas they take on the in-state rival Kansas State Wildcats. With an opportunity to secure its best season since 2007, the program should bring its best effort on Saturday.

Let’s look at what to watch for in this pivotal game.
