Woj: Ex-Boston Celtics assistant Jerome Allen to interview with Utah Jazz for open head coaching role

Now with the Detroit Pistons, Allen joins three other Boston alumni in the search to replace Quin Snyder.

The depth of the Boston Celtics alumni pool in the thick of the interview process to be the next head coach of the Utah Jazz just got longer according to recent reporting from ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski. Woj reports that former Boston assistant coach and current Detroit Pistons assistant Jerome Allen will be permitted by his current team to interview for the job recently vacated by 2021-22 Jazz head coach Quin Snyder.

Allen joins current Celtics assistants Will Hardy and Joe Mazzulla and onetime Boston shooting guard (and current G League coach for the Rapid City Gold) Jason Terry are also among Boston alumni who could well end up at the helm of the Jazz next season.

That the front office is under the guidance of former Boston President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge as the team seeks to shake things up significantly after stalling out as a not-quite contending team in recent seasons is likely part of the reason for such a notable Celtics connection to Utah’s hiring process.

But all of the alumni currently under consideration have enviable resumes documenting excellent bodies of respective work, and any of the foursome with ties to Boston would make a solid hire to lead Utah moving forward.

Celtics alum Jason Terry receives permission to interview for Utah Jazz head coach

The JET joins Boston assistants Will Hardy and Joe Mazzulla as candidates to replace Quin Snyder.

It seems that it is not just current Boston Celtics assistant coaches in the mix to be the next head coach of the Utah Jazz now that current head coach Quin Snyder plans to step down from that role, but now also includes at least one notable Celtics alumnus.

After news broke that Boston assistants Will Hardy and Joe Mazzulla were potential targets for the Jazz to replace Snyder broke, we are now hearing reports from The Athletic’s Shams Charania that Jason Terry is now a candidate as well. Charania reports that the Grand Rapids Gold coach has been permitted by the Denver Nuggets G League affiliate to interview with Utah for the open head coaching position.

Terry signed with the Celtics in the final season of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce’s tenure with the Celtics and was traded by Boston along with Pierce and Garnett to the Brooklyn Nets in the 2013 offseason.

Terry remains ties to the Celtics organization to this day, which he spoke about at length in a recent interview with the Celtics Lab podcast.

SI’s Chris Mannix mentions the Thunder as possible Quin Snyder landing spot for next year

“One location that was mentioned to me by someone that knows Quin Snyder: Oklahoma City.”

In a recent appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix spoke about former Utah Jazz Quin Snyder and possible new destinations for him. Snyder is arguably the hottest name out there in terms of available head coaches, but with the Charlotte Hornets being the only team in the league with a head coaching vacancy, odds are Snyder sits out at least this upcoming season.

Mannix brought up the popular San Antonio Spurs theory of Snyder becoming the heir of Gregg Popovich but also mentioned the Oklahoma City Thunder as a possible destination — a team that hasn’t been mentioned up until Mannix said so.

“Well, I don’t think he lands in Charlotte, which is the last vacant coaching opening. I think Quin — like a lot of assistant coaches or available coaches — are waiting to see what Gregg Popovich does, whether it’s this year or next year. One location that was mentioned to me by someone that knows Quin Snyder: Oklahoma City. That team has a coach right now, but depending on how this season goes, the Thunder may look to make a change next year. Quin Snyder has a great relationship with Sam Presti. So that’s a possibility.”

[pickup_prop id=”25313″]

Presti and Snyder having an established relationship shouldn’t be surprising considering they both spent time with the Spurs. The idea of the Thunder moving on from Mark Daigneault after a clear rebuilding season next year would be a little shocking. But if Presti believes the Thunder are ready to take the next step towards contention, then Snyder can take the team there.

More on this storyline

Jake Fischer: I do believe they’re internally weighing Rudy Gobert trade options, and externally making calls and contacting teams, and least on the preliminary stages, so far. It sounds from from my conversations with people on the leaguethat Toronto, Atlanta, and Chicago are the three teams so far that have shown at least some type of tangible interest in acquiring him, it’s going to be difficult to find any trade that works with his contract. -via Spotify / June 8, 2022
Bleacher Report previously illustrated the Atlanta Hawks’ and Toronto Raptors’ interest in acquiring Gobert. As Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer first mentioned, Chicago has also emerged as a potential trade destination for Gobert, sources told B/R. -via Bleacher Report / June 7, 2022

Two sources with knowledge of Snyder’s …

Two sources with knowledge of Snyder’s thinking said his departure was a result of nothing more than his wanting to go in a different direction and take a step away from basketball for the foreseeable future. There were no ultimatums from either side, no demands on how to shape the roster. The Jazz made multiple offers of various structures to extend Snyder’s tenure, sources said, but were consistently rebuffed. There is an expectation in league circles that whenever San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich inevitably steps away from his own head coaching post, Snyder will be the leading candidate to replace the fabled leader. Snyder is said to be held in high regard by Spurs CEO R.C. Buford.
