5 takeaways from Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ contract extension press conference

Kansas City Chiefs’ Andy Reid, Brett Veach and Patrick Mahomes spoke to the media on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs held a press conference on Tuesday with QB Patrick Mahomes following his record-setting contract extension. He was briefly joined by Chiefs HC Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach to discuss the details surrounding Mahomes’ extension in Kansas City. Here are five takeaways from the things that Mahomes, Veach and Reid had to say:

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

This mega-contract has been in the works for a while

The Kansas City Chiefs knew for a long time that Mahomes was going to get an extension, but they didn’t quite envision how much they’d be paying, at least not right away.

“Really, going back to the first free agency that I was part of back in 2018, we had the mindset to structure deals to prepare for an extension for Pat (Mahomes),” Veach said. “Again, it goes to the level of belief and faith that we had in Pat and this was before he was a fulltime starter. Now, the one thing in Pat’s favor is that as the (2018) season went on, the number kept getting bigger and bigger. So we were planning for the normal quarterback market back in ’18 and. . .  it just took off.”

His value took off so much so that the Chiefs’ cap gurus, Brandt Tilis and Chris Shea, soon realized they’d be forking out baseball money to Mahomes. In fact, it went back to Mike Trout’s contract which was signed in March of 2019.

“Brandt Tilis and Chris Shea. I remember when the Trout deal came out, Brandt coming down to my office and said, ‘Pat’s going to be a baseball contract. I mean that’s how good this kid’s going to be and we need to start thinking like this,'” Veach explained. “The cool thing about it is — and Coach Reid alluded to this — the maturity level of Pat, in this day and age, you’re looking around and it’s three-year deals, four-year deals. But Pat was so committed to this city and wanted security, certainly like every player does. But also wanted to be here and to win and to establish a dynasty. So he said, ‘Shoot let’s be creative, let’s figure out a way to do this. I want to be here for the rest of my career and I want to win.’ So the discussions on this contract have really been years in the making.”

Since Brett Veach took over for John Dorsey following the 2017 NFL Draft, everything has been done methodically so that this contract could happen. They might have needed to make a few tweaks along the way, but so far the front office has been very precise and deliberate in their decision-making with Mahomes.

How a liquor store employee broke news of Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ new extension

Not Schefter, not Rapoport, not Paylor, but Plaza Liquors’ Katie Camlin had the scoop on Patrick Mahomes’ contract extension.

The mania behind what was then a potential Patrick Mahomes contract extension all started with a tweet from Katie Camlin, an employee of Plaza Liquors. She came into work believing it’d be a normal Monday, but when she arrived her boss let her in on something that’d just happened.

“A front office employee for the Chiefs came in and bought 6 bottles of Dom Perignon,” The now-deleted tweet read. “Said there’s a big signing today. He said it’s not Chris Jones, so my guess is a Mahomes deal.”

The tweet made shockwaves throughout the Chiefs Kingdom. When we saw it here at Chiefs Wire, I began dusting off an old article shell I’d written after the team picked up Mahomes’ fifth-year option. Was Mahomes getting his much-anticipated contract extension? We’d soon find out that he was getting a lengthy contract extension totaling in $503 million.

“Off the cuff, I tweeted it because I’m a Chiefs fan and I was beyond excited,” Camlin told USA TODAY Sports. “It’s kind of fun to have a scoop.”

Camlin explained that she deleted her original tweet out of worry that she’d run off the Chiefs’ business or that she’d broken policy of Plaza Liquors.

“I didn’t want to lose their business,” Camlin continued “I was afraid they’d be mad. So I deleted it. But of course, screenshots are forever.”

She’s since been assured by the Chiefs’ employee and her own employers that no harm, no foul.

“I wanted to make sure he was okay,” Camlin said. “We just wanted to clear that he didn’t spill any beans.

“It was just me guessing!”

When she saw the initial report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, claiming Mahomes had signed a 10-year contract extension, Camlin tweeted an appropriate response.

It appears that Schefter is aware that he has some competition in Kansas City, offering congratulations and asking for a heads up next time.

Be vigilant out there, Chiefs Kingdom. You never know when you could stumble across some pertinent Chiefs news in Kansas City.

Contract breakdown for Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ extension

Base salary, bonus money and the salary cap numbers for each year of Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ extension.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year contract extension, that along with contract incentives is worth a total of $503 million dollars. The contract includes just over $63 million in guaranteed money at the point of signing and $141 million is guaranteed in the event of injury.

If you’ll notice all of the roster bonus money, you’ll find that most of this contract can become fully guaranteed based on Mahomes’ roster status. In addition to these numbers, starting in 2022, Mahomes has $2.5 million that he can earn by winning to the AFC Championship Game and earning the league MVP award. He’s already done both of those things once and he’ll have a chance to repeat.

Year Base Salary Signing Bonus Roster Bonus Workout Bonus Cap Hit Dead Cap
2020 $825,000 $4,521,508 $5,346,508 $64,953,413
2021 $990,000 $2,000,000 $21,716,905 $100,000 $24,806,905 $59,606,905
2022 $1,500,000 $2,000,000 $27,400,000 $550,000 $31,450,000 $34,900,000
2023 $5,500,000 $2,000,000 $34,400,000 $550,000 $42,450,000 $4,000,000
2024 $2,500,000 $2,000,000 $34,900,000 $550,000 $39,950,000 $2,000,000
2025 $2,500,000 $38,900,000 $550,000 $41,950,000
2026 $2,500,000 $38,900,000 $550,000 $41,950,000
2027 $10,000,000 $49,400,000 $550,000 $59,950,000
2028 $13,000,000 $30,900,000 $550,000 $44,450,000
2029 $20,500,000 $23,900,000 $550,000 $44,950,000
2030 $27,000,000 $22,900,000 $550,000 $50,450,000
2031 $38,000,000 $13,900,000 $550,000 $52,450,000

The most unique thing about this contract is how little signing bonus is attached to the deal initially. If the Chiefs need to free up some cap space to make a roster move, they can simply convert a portion of his yearly salary to signing bonus and create the needed cap space. That makes this, truly, a team-friendly contract. It’s not something that you’d expect to see from the richest contract in the history of sports either.

As important as the big payday was for Mahomes and his agents, it also was clearly important to leave the team with the needed flexibility to be able to continue to keep talent and win games. Mahomes doesn’t need to be reminded about what it was like at Texas Tech, putting up big numbers but failing to win games. At the end of the day, winning is what is most important to Mahomes and his contract is a reflection of that.

NFL players react to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ contract extension

NFL players reacted to Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ record-breaking extension on Twitter.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has become the highest-paid player in NFL history — also the highest-paid player in the history of professional sports — after agreeing to terms on a 10-year contract extension worth $503 million. The extension is set to keep him in Kansas City through 2031.

His teammates are ecstatic for him and so are the players that he competes against. They know he just reset the market for not just the quarterback position, but also any player that can complement or compete against that position at a high level. He’s breaking new grounds and will transform how the top players in the league are paid for years to come.

Mahomes’ teammates and peers in the NFL took to Twitter to react to his new contract extension. They all had nothing but good things to say about Mahomes. Check it out:

It looks like the Landlord might be trying to collect some rent money from his own teammate.

While Mahomes’ receivers are clearly very happy for him.

Not a single player in Kansas City seems to believe that Mahomes isn’t worth it.

Even Mahomes’ former teammates are excited about his massive payday.

And those who’ve played against him know that he deserves this contract.

Some opponents are hoping their teammates will now get theirs.

Others are lamenting the past while they wait for a payday of their own.

Some are considering a career change.

While others talk about training the next generation.

Others are happy to see a fellow Black man succeed.

I think we’re all probably fantasizing a bit about what he’ll do with all that money.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes becomes first half-billion dollar player in sports history

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is making sports contract history.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is making history, becoming the first half-billion dollar player in the world of sports.

Mahomes’ agency Steinberg Sports, led by Leigh Steinberg and Chris Cabott, negotiated the extension for the quarterback. They recently took to Twitter and released the final contract details for Mahomes. His extension will be worth over a half-billion dollars, totaling $503 million. According to Steinberg Sports, Mahomes will have a total of $477 million in guaranteed mechanisms attached to the contract. He’ll be able to get out of the contract if the contract guarantees aren’t exercised by the Chiefs.

There will also be a no-trade clause attached to the deal, not that Kansas City would ever fathom trading Mahomes. A small price to pay for a former league MVP and Super Bowl MVP.

The previous richest contract in sports history was signed last year by Los Angeles Angels centerfielder Mike Trout. He signed a 12-year deal which is worth $426.5 million in total. Yes, Patrick Mahomes has exceeded baseball money with this new 10-year extension.

Mahomes’ deal isn’t just the biggest contract in NFL history, it’s going to turn the entire sporting world upside down. You’re going to have baseball players, basketball players and certainly other quarterbacks across the league trying to match it. Let’s be real, though, none of those players are even close to capable of doing what Mahomes has already accomplished in his short career.

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially announced the Mahomes extension and top brass had a lot to say.

[jwplayer raElb46Y-ThvAeFxT]

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially announced that Patrick Mahomes has signed a 10-year contract extension with the team. Alongside their announcement comes comments from CEO and chairman Clark Hunt, general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid. You can find each of their statements below.

Clark Hunt:

This is a significant moment for our franchise and for the Chiefs Kingdom. Since he joined the Chiefs just a few years ago, Patrick has developed into one of the most prolific athletes in all of sports. With his dynamic play and infectious personality, he is one of the most recognized and beloved figures to put on the Chiefs uniform. He’s an extraordinary leader and a credit to the Kansas City community, and I’m delighted that he will be a member of the Chiefs for many years to come.

Brett Veach:

Getting this deal done has been a priority for us for quite a while now. I’d like to thank Chris Cabott and Leigh Steinberg for their efforts and patience, along with Brandt Tilis and Chris Shea on my staff. I’d also like to recognize Clark Hunt, Mark Donovan and Coach Reid who have all been incredibly supportive while we’ve worked though the details. I’ve said from the beginning that Patrick is one of the most impressive players I’ve ever scouted, but I don’t think anyone could have envisioned everything he’s brought to our football team and community. His abilities are so rare, and to couple that with an incredible personality is outstanding. We’re going to continue to do everything we can to surround him with talent, and this deal provides us more flexibility to do that. He’s obviously an integral part to our success and we’re thrilled he’s going to be the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs for a long time.

Andy Reid:

I’ve had the privilege of coaching a lot of incredible athletes and special people in my career, and Patrick is without question on that list of players. The best part is he’s still early in his career. He’s a natural leader and always grinding, whether that’s on the field, in the weight room or watching film, he wants to be the best. He’s a competitor and his teammates feed off his energy. He makes us all better as an organization and we are blessed he’s going to be our quarterback for years to come.

WATCH: Patrick Mahomes posts video message to Chiefs Kingdom

Mahomes wants everyone to know that the Kansas City Chiefs are chasing a dynasty.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has posted a video message on Twitter to the Chiefs Kingdom. This video comes following the announcement that Mahomes has officially signed a 10-year contract extension to remain with the team. It includes a caption that says, “Here to stay.” It showcases some old highlights dating back to his earliest days with the team and some from his most recent triumphs. It also announces to the league that Mahomes plans on turning the Chiefs into the next dynasty.

You can check out the video down below:

“Chiefs Kingdom, you’ve been with me since the beginning, from rookie year to becoming a starter to the unconventional to doing whatever it takes to win to showdowns. You helped me come back from injury. You helped me come back from deficits — multiple deficits. You helped me overcome adversity. To become Super Bowl champs and we’re staying together… for a long time. We’re chasing a dynasty.”

Those are some pretty powerful words from Mahomes. It’s hard not to get excited about what he and the Chiefs are building together for the next decade beyond.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ contract will buy him a lot of ketchup and his dad a lot of salt

Patrick Mahomes will make more in a week what his father made in his entire MLB career.

[jwplayer raElb46Y-ThvAeFxT]

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is reported to be making baseball money on his new contract extension, totaling roughly $400 million dollars over 10 years.

That’s a lot of money that Mahomes could spend on ketchup, but it’ll come with plenty of salt packets for Pat Mahomes Sr., who formerly played baseball professionally. Mahomes’ father played for a number of MLB teams from 1992-2003, including the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets. During the course of his career, he earned slightly less than $3 million. That’s basically what Mahomes earned during his rookie year with the Chiefs.

Now, with Mahomes’ new contract over the next decade, he could eventually wind up earning close to $3 million on a weekly basis as the quarterback for the Chiefs during the course of an NFL season. That means Mahomes will make in a week what his dad made during his entire professional baseball career, hence the salt.

Beforehand, many probably thought that playing baseball might have been the better move for Mahomes from a financial standpoint. It certainly was an option for him, but he went with football instead. After this contract extension for Mahomes, we all probably could serve to put a little more ketchup on our steaks.

Chiefs to sign QB Patrick Mahomes to 10-year contract extension

Mahomes is staying in Kansas City for a long time.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed QB Patrick Mahomes to a long-term contract extension that will keep him in Kansas City through the 2031 season.

According to a new report from ESPN’S Adam Schefter, Mahomes and the Chiefs have reached an agreement on a 10-year contract extension. That’s in addition to the two remaining years Mahomes had on his contract, making it 12 total years of Mahomes in Kansas City. That means Mahomes will be in with the Chiefs until he’s 36 years old, well through the prime of his career.

Such an extension is about as close to a forever contract as you’ll get in the NFL. The last time a quarterback signed a 10-year extension in the NFL was 2004, when Michael Vick signed a 10-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons.

Details are still forthcoming on how much his contract will be worth, but it’s expected to be the richest contract in NFL history according to Schefter.

In his first two seasons as starting quarterback, Mahomes became league MVP and Super Bowl MVP, toppling franchise and NFL records along the way. In his young career, Mahomes has already thrown for 76 touchdown and 9,412 yards. He’s also become the new face of the NFL, leading the league in merchandise sales as one of the most recognizable players in the game.

This contract has Mahomes poised to be with Kansas City wreaking havoc on the NFL for many years to come.
