LOOK: Chiefs sent Katie Camlin a gift after she broke Patrick Mahomes extension news

A class move by the Kansas City Chiefs organization.

The Kansas City Chiefs sent a gift to local news breaker Katie Camlin after she broke one of the biggest stories of the year.

A few months back, when Patrick Mahomes signed his record-breaking contract extension with the Chiefs, it wasn’t Adam Schefter or Ian Rapoport or Terez Paylor who broke the news. Instead, it was Plaza Liquor employee Katie Camlin, who pointed out that a Chiefs employee had come into the store and purchased a large amount of Dom Pérignon. She took to Twitter to share her findings.

“A front office employee for the Chiefs came in and bought 6 bottles of Dom Perignon,” The tweet read. “Said there’s a big signing today. He said it’s not Chris Jones, so my guess is a Mahomes deal.”

Sure enough, the Mahomes deal would be announced shortly after. Camlin had scooped all the big-time reporters and the Chiefs were really cool about all of it. Later, they even made a little fun of the situation in a video that included Camlin when Chris Jones signed a long-term deal with the team.

Once the dust settled, Brett Veach did something really classy. He sent a bottle of Dom Pérignon to Camlin, but this one was a bit special.

Talk about a cool moment for an astute member of the Chiefs Kingdom.

You can watch a feature on Camlin and her story, which debuted on ESPN Countdown today down below:

How a liquor store employee broke news of Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ new extension

Not Schefter, not Rapoport, not Paylor, but Plaza Liquors’ Katie Camlin had the scoop on Patrick Mahomes’ contract extension.

The mania behind what was then a potential Patrick Mahomes contract extension all started with a tweet from Katie Camlin, an employee of Plaza Liquors. She came into work believing it’d be a normal Monday, but when she arrived her boss let her in on something that’d just happened.

“A front office employee for the Chiefs came in and bought 6 bottles of Dom Perignon,” The now-deleted tweet read. “Said there’s a big signing today. He said it’s not Chris Jones, so my guess is a Mahomes deal.”

The tweet made shockwaves throughout the Chiefs Kingdom. When we saw it here at Chiefs Wire, I began dusting off an old article shell I’d written after the team picked up Mahomes’ fifth-year option. Was Mahomes getting his much-anticipated contract extension? We’d soon find out that he was getting a lengthy contract extension totaling in $503 million.

“Off the cuff, I tweeted it because I’m a Chiefs fan and I was beyond excited,” Camlin told USA TODAY Sports. “It’s kind of fun to have a scoop.”

Camlin explained that she deleted her original tweet out of worry that she’d run off the Chiefs’ business or that she’d broken policy of Plaza Liquors.

“I didn’t want to lose their business,” Camlin continued “I was afraid they’d be mad. So I deleted it. But of course, screenshots are forever.”

She’s since been assured by the Chiefs’ employee and her own employers that no harm, no foul.

“I wanted to make sure he was okay,” Camlin said. “We just wanted to clear that he didn’t spill any beans.

“It was just me guessing!”

When she saw the initial report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, claiming Mahomes had signed a 10-year contract extension, Camlin tweeted an appropriate response.

It appears that Schefter is aware that he has some competition in Kansas City, offering congratulations and asking for a heads up next time.

Be vigilant out there, Chiefs Kingdom. You never know when you could stumble across some pertinent Chiefs news in Kansas City.
