Pac-12 QB Rankings: Nix can take over the No. 1 spot with big day vs Cal

Bo Nix may not be the leader of the PFF quarterback rankings at the moment, but a good week against Cal should change that.

Caleb Williams ran away with the PFF quarterback rankings title last season as he also took home the Heisman Trophy. The other Pac-12 signal callers don’t have to worry about that in 2023 with Williams not having that kind of season this year.

The USC quarterback is still among the best out there, but with games against Washington, Oregon and UCLA, it’s difficult to see him leapfrog three quarterbacks for the title.

Right now, the winner of these rankings could very well bring home the Heisman once again, and Oregon’s Bo Nix has a good of a chance as any to be that guy. The schedule also plays in his favor although he’s not the leader at the moment, Nix has an excellent chance to be No. 1 at this time next week.

Here’s how the rankings currently stand.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff ranked the No. 15 QB in the NFL

Lions QB Jared Goff ranked the No. 15 QB in the NFL in Touchdown Wire’s annual ratings

One of the more fun exercises that we all do during the NFL off-season is rank the position groups from across the league. Whether it be running backs, defensive ends or kickers, there’s different rankings and tiers from everyone.

Without question, the biggest positional ranking that gets the most debate is the quarterbacks.

It’s always interesting to see where fans and analysts rank Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. While most rankings have him ranked somewhere in the top-20, there have been rankings that push him much closer to the top-10 and others that have him outside of that top-20 spot.

Regardless of the variances in the rankings, it seems like the consensus ranking on Jared Goff is that he’s in the middle of the pack for NFL quarterbacks.

One of my colleagues here at USA Today had put out her own quarterback rankings of all-32 NFL quarterbacks in the NFL. In this piece, Natalie Miller did a great job in being honest and thorough in her rankings.

For Jared Goff, she ranked him 15th in the NFL and here’s what she had to say about Goff:

“One of the biggest winners of the offseason was Jared Goff who kept his whiz of an offensive coordinator in Ben Johnson who made the most of his talent. While Goff floundered a bit at times last season, he was overall one of the better players at the position over 17 games. If he can continue to grow into this high flying offense he may end up in the top ten of this list.”

This explanation is spot-on about Goff. Not only did the Lions offense look to get better on paper, Goff was able to keep offensive coordinator Ben Johnson around for another season. This could position the Lions for their first division championship since 1993 or potentially a playoff push.

Regardless, much of the Lions success will rest in the hands of their quarterback. If he plays well, not only should Detroit make the playoffs for the first time since 2016 but Goff could very well end up on top-10 quarterback lists around the league. We’ll see how it all plays out for Goff and the Lions but it’s exciting times to be a Lions fan. For more on Natalie’s, you can follow the link below.

Brock Purdy in middle of TD Wire QB rankings with big 2023 season ahead

Brock Purdy in the middle of TD Wire’s QB rankings … for now.

The 49ers have enough confidence in Brock Purdy that they’re going to make him their starting quarterback once he’s recovered from offseason elbow surgery. His eight-ish game sample size as the starter gave the team enough information to believe he can get them over the NFC championship game hump and into the Super Bowl.

While the team may have that level of belief in the final pick of the 2022 draft, other analysts need to see more. That’s why Purdy’s rank at No. 17 in Doug Farrar’s ranking of all 32 starting quarterbacks makes a ton of sense. Here’s what Farrar wrote at Touchdown Wire:

In what was certainly the biggest surprise of the season, Brock Purdy turned being a third string quarterback drafted with the last pick in the draft into a potential starting job for the 49ers going into the season. It was hard to find somebody who played with as much grit and precision as Purdy during that time, and he can continue to develop his skillset further.

For now, Purdy sits in the middle. He was roughly the same as Jimmy Garoppolo last season with a touch more playmaking out of structure and a greater willingness to push the ball into the intermediate and deep areas of the field. Garoppolo regularly sat in the 15-20 range of various QB rankings.

Purdy’s production was that of a higher-ranked QB, but the sample was pretty small. It was enough to put him into the top 20, but not enough to launch him toward the top 10.

This year will be the fulcrum for Purdy’s future ranking. There’s a chance he maintains his upward trajectory and his added playmaking turns him into something better than Garoppolo over the long term and elevates the 49ers offense in a way that propels Purdy up the rankings.

There’s also a chance he regresses and his numbers suffer because of it. That may cause him to dip as he turns into a player who looks more like a late-round pick than a future superstar.

Both scenarios are firmly on the table with Purdy trying to get healthy in time for a Week 1 return. That’s the first box to check. He has to be available. After that it’ll be up to No. 13 to either boost himself up the rankings and at the same time push the 49ers over the hump for their sixth Lombardi Trophy, or tumble down the rankings and have the 49ers in a spot where they continue looking for their franchise QB.
