It’s still too soon to say who wins the New Orelans Saints quarterbacks competition, but Sean Payton hopes to have his answer sooner rather than later. NBC Sports’ Peter King reports that a lot is riding on Jameis Winston’s opportunity to run the starting offense on Monday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars, following Taysom Hill’s time with the starters a week ago in Baltimore. King wrote:

“Payton told me he hopes to name his starter before the final preseason game Saturday against Arizona, so Winston’s performance with the first team for multiple series will be the most important game he’s played since he lost his job in 2019 in Tampa Bay.”

Unlike Hill, Winston should get full exposure with the strongest members of his supporting cast — Payton said last week that the team plans to dress several starters who sat out the preseason opener like Alvin Kamara and bookend tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk. The Times-Picayune | Advocate’s Jeff Duncan adds that the Saints are approaching this as “their big preseason tuneup” with most starters expected to rest in the preseason finale with Arizona.

So it’s shaping up for a make or break performance for Winston, which is rare to see in the preseason. But he hasn’t separated from Hill much throughout training camp, so it’s come down to this in the eleventh hour. Maybe his “closing argument,” as King characterized it, is strong enough after 18 practices and a couple of exhibition games to sway Payton’s mind. Either way, we’ll be watching.

Comparing Casey Thompson and Hudson Card’s performance in the spring game

Longhorns Wire compares how Casey Thompson and Hudson Card performed in the annual Orange-White game.

The eyes of Texas were squarely upon Casey Thompson and Hudson Card on Saturday. The Texas Longhorns annual Orange and White game gave fans a glimpse at the player’s progressions and the new Steve Sarkisian regime.

Even though there are other important starting spots in question, the quarterback battle has been the premier topic of discussion for this offseason.

It was interesting to note that Casey Thompson felt like the early favorite to win the job by the staff after he was given the nod to play with the first-team offense.  Thompson had the best set of weapons in running back Bijan Robinson and receivers Jordan Whittington and Joshua Moore.

That didn’t seem to bother Hudson Card as he displayed accuracy, timing and just looked like he was better than the competition he was pitted against.

On the next page, Longhorns Wire breaks down what they did well, what they need to work on and how they stacked up against each other.

Who will start at QB for the Chicago Bears in Week 1?

Projecting the Week 1 starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears.

The Chicago Bears have been busy this offseason, including the addition of QB Nick Foles to their quarterbacks’ room. It will be interesting to see how the battle under center unfolds this summer and into the fall. Below, we focus on which quarterback will be the Bears’ Week 1 starter and the NFL futures betting odds from BetMGM sportsbook.

Chicago Bears: QB depth chart

The incumbent starting quarterback is Mitchell Trubisky, but the former No. 2 overall pick from the 2017 NFL Draft has produced some rather uneven results. As such, general manager Ryan Pace turned up the heat by acquiring Foles from the Jacksonville Jaguars on the final day of March in exchange for a compensatory fourth-round pick.

Former Tennessee Volunteers signal-caller Tyler Bray rounds out the quarterbacks’ room, although he isn’t considered a factor in the battle for the top spot.

Chicago Bears’ Week 1 starter: Best bets

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Odds last updated Monday, April 27 at 10:45 a.m. ET.

Trubisky (+120) has been mostly underwhelming over three seasons under center in which he has started a total of 41 games. He has completed 63.4% of his pass attempts for 8,554 yards and 48 touchdowns with 29 interceptions. He has rushed for 862 yards and seven scores. He has been sacked 93 times and has fumbled 21 times.

Foles (-159), who led the Philadelphia Eagles franchise to their lone Super Bowl win after starter Carson Wentz was injured late in the 2017 season, was given a boatload of money by the Jaguars ahead of the 2019 campaign. A broken collarbone sidelined him before he was able to get going, and undrafted rookie Gardner Minshew picked up the ball and ran with it, literally, making Foles expendable.

In Chicago, it will be a battle between Foles and Trubisky, and experience and winning are on the side of the newcomer. The 31-year-old Foles has been both a backup and starter in the NFL, and his experience leading the Eagles to playoff wins will likely mean fans push for him to get a shot sooner rather than later.

In Week 1, EXPECT TRUBISKY (+120) to be the starting signal-caller, as the Bears will likely be reluctant to pull the plug and admit failure just yet. The former UNC Tar Heel is likely to be on a super short leash, and if he struggles in the first game or two, it wouldn’t be surprising to see “Saint Nick” get the nod before the leaves start changing colors.
