Urban Meyer discusses whether Trevor Lawrence will be ready by Week 1

Meyer says Lawrence isn’t ready to play right now but that he’s optimistic as the rookie continues to progress.

Any time you draft a quarterback in the first round, deciding when to play them can be a bit of a gamble. Pull the trigger too early, and it could harm their development. Likewise, coaches are under a lot of pressure to play highly drafted passers early.

This is especially true when that quarterback is taken with the first overall pick, and that’s exactly the situation Jacksonville finds itself in. Coming off a 1-15 season in 2020, fans certainly expect to see Trevor Lawrence early, possibly as soon as the first offensive snap of the season.

In an interview with USA TODAY’s Mackenzie Salmon on “Sports Seriously,” Jaguars coach Urban Meyer said the team isn’t in a rush to make a decision about the QB1 role.

“He’s not ready yet, but he doesn’t have to be ready yet,” Meyer said, according to quotes transcribed by John Shipley of Jaguar Report. “We got a long training camp coming up. He’s probably advanced maybe a little quicker than we would’ve thought, which was a positive.”

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as Lawrence was limited throughout minicamp as he recovers from shoulder surgery in the spring. He should be at (or at least, near) 100% by the start of camp next month, and that will be his true chance to solidify himself as the team’s starter.

However, the work developing Lawrence started long before OTAs. In fact, it started well before he was even selected by the Jags. We know that he had the playbook before the draft, and Meyer elaborated to Salmon about what the team’s strategy was once it decided upon taking Lawrence.

“One thing that we worked on — when we made a decision that Trevor was going to be our No. 1 pick, we went from the evaluation stage to the preparation stage,” Meyer said.

“And that means that I want to see — I can’t remember the exact date, but we started installing the playbook with him well before the draft. So you can see the retention, he’s got a really good work ethic and he’s progressed very well.”

According to these comments by Meyer, it sounds like Lawrence is right on schedule in terms of his progression. Though it seems he hasn’t been the clear best quarterback so far, it probably wasn’t fair to expect him to be as he adjusts to the speed of the professional game and nurses his shoulder back to health.

Jacksonville has backups with starting experience in Gardner Minshew and C.J. Beathard, but Jags fans don’t want to see either of those players line up under center Week 1. And though he hasn’t earned the job yet, it seems Lawrence is well on track to be the guy.

Who will start at QB for the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1?

Projecting the Week 1 starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Los Angeles Chargers have a veteran quarterback on their roster in Tyrod Taylor, and they drafted their quarterback of the future in Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. They will enter the 2020 season with someone other than Philip Rivers as their starting quarterback for the first time since 2005.

Below, we focus on which quarterback will be the Chargers’ Week 1 starter tied around NFL futures betting odds from BetMGM sportsbook.

Los Angeles Chargers’ Week 1 starter: Best bets

Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn has been public in his support of Taylor. He was with the team last season and knows the offense; however, the Chargers did use the No. 6 pick in the draft to select Herbert, and he is expected to be their quarterback of the future.

With the league expected to have a shortened offseason with much fewer reps on the field, it’s becoming more likely Herbert will be eased into a starting role as the season progresses. While Kyler Murray was given the starting job from Day 1 for the Arizona Cardinals in 2019, other young quarterbacks have eased into their jobs.

Daniel Jones and Dwayne Haskins started on the bench in 2019 for the New York Giants and Washington Redskins, respectively. Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield, Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, then-Cardinals QB Josh Rosen and Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen took over later in the 2018 season.

While there isn’t much value in the bet, betting TAYLOR (-278) will take the first snap of the season for the Chargers is the best play. Don’t waste time with Stick or Newton. With both Herbert and Taylor, the Chargers won’t even consider a free-agent addition.

Who will start at QB for the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1?

Projecting the Week 1 starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders.

There appeared to be a legitimate chance the Las Vegas Raiders would use either the No. 12 or No. 19 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on their next franchise quarterback heading into the 2020 NFL offseason. After the team signed Marcus Mariota in free agency, it squashed that possibility as head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock decided to use their first-round capital to address other positions of need.

The quarterback situation now appears fairly set heading toward the 2020 season; however, we will take a look at the recent odds posted by BetMGM on who will be the Week 1 starter for the Raiders.

Las Vegas Raiders’ Week 1 starter: Best bets

Derek Carr (-589)

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Odds last updated Tuesday, April 28 at 12 p.m. ET.

Carr is a monster favorite to open the season as the team’s starter. In his second season with Gruden as the head coach, Carr improved on his completion percentage (70.4%), yards per attempt (7.9) and passer rating (100.8).

While there are still areas of his game where he needs to improve, the Raiders added speed and talent to their wide receiver corps this offseason to help him out. Unless an injury happens between now and Week 1, Carr will be the team’s starting quarterback. The odds are chalky, but Carr is a safe bet here to begin the season as the starter.

New to sports betting? A $10 futures bet on Carr to be the Week 1 starter would return a profit of $1.70.

Marcus Mariota (+350)

After being replaced by Ryan Tannehill as the starter for the Tennessee Titans last season, Mariota hit free agency and signed a two-year deal with the Raiders to be the team’s backup quarterback. It’s an excellent deal for Mariota as he is now the highest-paid backup QB in the NFL.

In normal circumstances, Mariota might have a chance to beat out Carr in the offseason for the starting job. With teams not holding minicamps or OTAs, Mariota just won’t see many reps in the Raiders’ offense ahead of the 2020 season. For that reason, he won’t beat out Carr in time for Week 1. While the odds are enticing, PASS on Mariota to start the season as the Raiders’ No. 1 quarterback.

Las Vegas Raiders’ Week 1 starter: Long shots

Cam Newton (+2000)

The first non-Raiders player to appear on the list is the former Carolina Panthers’ star and MVP winner. Carolina released Newton early this offseason as they decided to sign Teddy Bridgewater to be the face of the franchise. Newton is currently a free agent and there hasn’t been a lot of noise about a potential landing spot, either.

While Gruden can never say “no” to enticing quarterback prospects, there just doesn’t appear to be a spot open for Newton. If Carr or Mariota were to suffer an injury at any point in time, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Raiders called Newton and his agent, but as for now, PASS on Newton being the team’s starter in Week 1 or at any point in the 2020 season.

Andy Dalton (+5000)

Finally, Dalton appears on the list as a potential starter for the Raiders in Week 1. Like Newton, this one doesn’t make much sense as Dalton is currently on the Cincinnati Bengals’ roster and the Raiders would need to make a trade to acquire him. For Dalton to start for Las Vegas, it likely means something happened to both Carr and Mariota. For that reason, it doesn’t seem very likely. PASS on Dalton to become the team’s starting quarterback in 2020, despite the lofty 50-1 odds.

Who will start at QB for the Chicago Bears in Week 1?

Projecting the Week 1 starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears.

The Chicago Bears have been busy this offseason, including the addition of QB Nick Foles to their quarterbacks’ room. It will be interesting to see how the battle under center unfolds this summer and into the fall. Below, we focus on which quarterback will be the Bears’ Week 1 starter and the NFL futures betting odds from BetMGM sportsbook.

Chicago Bears: QB depth chart

The incumbent starting quarterback is Mitchell Trubisky, but the former No. 2 overall pick from the 2017 NFL Draft has produced some rather uneven results. As such, general manager Ryan Pace turned up the heat by acquiring Foles from the Jacksonville Jaguars on the final day of March in exchange for a compensatory fourth-round pick.

Former Tennessee Volunteers signal-caller Tyler Bray rounds out the quarterbacks’ room, although he isn’t considered a factor in the battle for the top spot.

Chicago Bears’ Week 1 starter: Best bets

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Odds last updated Monday, April 27 at 10:45 a.m. ET.

Trubisky (+120) has been mostly underwhelming over three seasons under center in which he has started a total of 41 games. He has completed 63.4% of his pass attempts for 8,554 yards and 48 touchdowns with 29 interceptions. He has rushed for 862 yards and seven scores. He has been sacked 93 times and has fumbled 21 times.

Foles (-159), who led the Philadelphia Eagles franchise to their lone Super Bowl win after starter Carson Wentz was injured late in the 2017 season, was given a boatload of money by the Jaguars ahead of the 2019 campaign. A broken collarbone sidelined him before he was able to get going, and undrafted rookie Gardner Minshew picked up the ball and ran with it, literally, making Foles expendable.

In Chicago, it will be a battle between Foles and Trubisky, and experience and winning are on the side of the newcomer. The 31-year-old Foles has been both a backup and starter in the NFL, and his experience leading the Eagles to playoff wins will likely mean fans push for him to get a shot sooner rather than later.

In Week 1, EXPECT TRUBISKY (+120) to be the starting signal-caller, as the Bears will likely be reluctant to pull the plug and admit failure just yet. The former UNC Tar Heel is likely to be on a super short leash, and if he struggles in the first game or two, it wouldn’t be surprising to see “Saint Nick” get the nod before the leaves start changing colors.
