Everything you need to know about the 2023 Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue Boilermakers team preview:

Wisconsin travels to West Lafayette, Indiana Friday night for its Big Ten opener against the Purdue Boilermakers.

The Badgers have a lot to fix after a sleepy 35-14 win over Georgia Southern. The defense is getting beat through the air consistently, while the offense is still struggling to put together consistent drives.

There is good news and bad news with the matchup against Purdue. The good: Wisconsin hasn’t lost to Purdue since 2003 and never seems fazed by the road environment. The bad: A Friday night game doesn’t bode great for an offense struggling with consistency and execution.

Either way, it’s a matchup Wisconsin must win if it wants to win the Big Ten West for the first time since 2019.

Before the matchup, here is everything you need to know about the 2023 Purdue Boilermakers:

Wisconsin has a changes at RB, TE in its Week 8 offensive depth chart

Wisconsin has released its depth chart for Saturday’s contest against the No. 25 Purdue Boilermakers.

There were a few subtle changes to note, as things must be shuffled for the upcoming game with RB Isaac Guerendo ruled out for the year and TE Jack Eschenbach ruled out for Saturday’s game.

There will also be a change at kick returner with Devin Chandler having entered the transfer portal earlier today. The news came out after the depth chart was released, so Chandler is still listed as the No. 1 at that position with CB Faion Hicks listed No. 2.

Purdue Boilermakers College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense continues to be a blast. The passing game will keep on cranking, the production will still be among the best in the Big Ten – Purdue was No. 1 in the Big Ten in passing offense – and the production is more effective than the 370 total yards and 27 points per game.

Yeah, you are what your numbers are, but this is a dangerous attack that gets back nine starters.

Jack Plummer and Aidan O’Connell can each run the offense. It’s going to be an ongoing battle for the starting job, and there’s no wrong answer.

They both threw for over 900 yards in their three games of work, Plummer threw eight touchdown passes and two picks, and O’Connell threw seven scoring passes with two picks, and neither one is a dangerous runner – although Plummer is more mobile.

Rondale Moore might be an Arizona Cardinal, but the receiving corps is still outstanding. David Bell is a 6-2, 205-pound No. 1 target who led the team with 53 grabs with eight touchdowns, and he’s not along with 6-3 Milton Wright, tight ends Payne Durham and Garrett Miller, and the quick Jackson Anthrop all going to get in plenty of work.

– The running game has parts, but they’re not used enough. Zander Horvath led the team with 442 yards and two scores – and he can catch, making 30 grabs – but the team only ran 150 times in the six games.

There’s sneaky-good star power on the O line around Gus Hartwig somewhere on the inside and Greg Long at one tackle spot. Getting Tyler Witt from WKU for somewhere in the interior is a plus.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Purdue Boilermakers Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense was just fine, but it was hammered by injuries and the inconsistencies followed. The quarterback situation never seemed quite settled with three players getting a turn, the running game didn’t exist, and losing superstar receiver Rondale Moore in the first month wasn’t a plus.

Even so, the Boilermakers led the Big Ten and was 12th in the nation in passing, averaging 310 yards per game.

It all starts finding a quarterback who can stay healthy and lock down the gig. Jack Plummer is the likely top option if he’s well past his banged up ankle, but UCLA transfer Austin Burton and junior Aidan O’Connell will get equal chances.

The receiving corps is special. It was young each of the last two years, and it didn’t matter – it was still terrific. Losing volume-catching tight end Brycen Hopkins to the Los Angeles Rams stinks, but the wideouts should pick up the slack. Rondale Moore is expected to be back and fine, but the 114-catch playmaker of 2018 – he caught 29 passes last season before hurting his ankle – doesn’t have to do it alone.

6-2, 210-pound sophomore led the team with 86 grabs for 1,035 yards and seven scores, and sophomore Amad Anderson caught 31 passes for 343 yards and three scores. In all, the top five wideouts are back, and freshmen Maliq Carr and Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen should be in the mix early on.

And the tight ends? There’s not another Hopkins, but 6-5, 255-pound Payne Durham is coming off a four-touchdown season – on just nine catches – and will get the first look.

The offensive line was an issue when it came to keeping defenses out of the backfield, but now it’s at least experienced. It’s a young group, but four starters are back and the depth isn’t bad. This is a true recruit-to-a-type line – you have to be able to move to block in this O.

The running backs need to be used a bit more and need more room to move. The combination of sophomore King Doerue and junior Zander Horvath are back after finishing 1-2 in rushing, respectively, but they only combined for 828 yards and seven scores. Doerue is a dangerous receiver, too, making 20 grabs with two scores.
