Purdue rebounded from Monday’s 65-64 loss at Rutgers to earn a hard-fought 71-69 win at No. 23 Ohio State Thursday and cover the 1.5-point spread. The Boilermakers, who snapped an 8-game winless streak (0-7-1) against the spread (ATS), knocked down a season-high 13 triples in the contest. Slow-tempo Purdue does not usually rely on 3s to that extent; it ranks 271st in NCAA-I with a 31.5% mark from beyond the arc.

The Nittany Lions last played on Wednesday when they were a +4 underdog and lost 79-69 at Michigan. Penn State was a -6 on the boards and sent the Wolverines to the free-throw line 25 times. Against the number, PSU has won back-to-back games against Purdue.

Against the spread

Purdue is a slow-tempo program that plays a lot of close games. The Boilermakers are 6-17-3 ATS in their last 26 games following a straight-up win. Purdue is 1-10 ATS when favored by 4.5-points or more.

Purdue is coming off a Monday home loss to Wisconsin. The loss to the Badgers snapped a four-game win streak. In the game – a 74-69 setback – the nation’s fourth-leading offense (85.9 points per game) was held under 70 points for just a second time this season.

The Nittany Lions have been solid defensively and on the boards in winning three of their last four. Before that stretch, Penn State had lost three of four (Nov. 26-Dec. 5). Across its last four games, PSU has held opponents to 65.5 PPG while being a plus-4.0 in rebounding.

Penn State has been sneaky-solid lately. This play would be more of a value stealth attack if the Boilermakers hadn’t lost Monday. But the price here will do. BET THE NITTANY LIONS (+340).

Against the spread

The Boilermakers are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games overall. The underdog is 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight PU-PSU meetings.

Purdue is a very strong team, but peg the expectations of late as being overcooked.

The Nittany Lions are led by first-year head coach Micah Shrewsberry, who spent the last three years as an assistant at Purdue. Shrewsberry’s Lions have the home hardwood and the momentum in this one. PSU is an experienced, slow-temp squad. Getting more than 5 or 6 points here is a boon for bettors. TAKE PENN STATE +9.5 (-115).

Over/Under

Peg this game as reaching the 140s. Because Purdue has some advantages in the 1- and 3-point games (free throws and triples) and in second-chance points, the OVER 138.5 (-110) is a decent play here as a hedge if betting PSU. If the Boilers cover, its likely in an Over.

The Purdue Boilermakers (15-8 overall, 10-6 Big Ten) visit the Penn State Nittany Lions (8-12, 5-11) Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pa.

  1. Purdue enters on a 2-game win streak, coming off a 75-58 victory at Nebraska Saturday. The Boilermakers, who covered the spread as 7.5-point favorites, used a 19-4 run to pull away in the second half. Junior F Trevion Williams leads Purdue with 16.0 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per game.
  2. Penn State also beat Nebraska in its last game, snapping a 4-game skid with an 86-83 home win Tuesday. Junior G Myreon Jones scored a career-high 29 points, but the Nittany Lions failed to cover as 6.5-point favorites. Senior G Jamari Wheeler broke a 70-all tie with a 3-pointer at the 5:59 mark and hit a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left before the Cornhuskers missed a 3 in the final seconds. Jones leads the Lions with 15.6 PPG.
  3. Purdue improved to 10-1 in the last 11 games vs. Penn State with an 80-72 home win as a 3.5-point favorite in mid-January. All five Purdue starters scored in double figures with junior G Sasha Stefanovic’s 15 points leading the way.
