Broncos activate LB Drew Sanders to 53-man roster

The Broncos have activated LB Drew Sanders from the PUP list to the 53-man roster. He’s back.

The Denver Broncos have activated linebacker Drew Sanders from the physically unable perform list to the 53-man roster, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Sanders (6-4, 233 pounds) was picked by the Broncos in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft out of Arkansas. He started four games at inside linebacker out of necessity as a rookie before being moved to outside linebacker.

Sanders tore his Achilles this spring but has since recovered and he returned to practice three weeks ago. Denver had room for him on the active roster after waiving tight end Greg Dulcich on Tuesday (Dulcich was picked up by the New York Giants).

Now the Broncos will have to decide which position Sanders will play following his return.

“It’s a work in progress,” Denver general manager George Paton said when asked about Sanders’ position on Feb. 27. “We thought he finished well on the edge. We’re going sit down with Drew and the coaches, and we’ve had those meetings. I think he’ll probably end up on the edge, but he has the flexibility. He’s so talented. It’s hard. It’s kind of like Baron Browning. We interviewed a kid last night from Notre Dame who’s played inside and outside. It’s a blessing and sometimes it’s a curse because he can’t get settled in at one position. Once we left Drew at outside, he finished strong and so we feel good about Drew moving forward.”

Broncos inside linebackers Kwon Alexander and Zach Cunningham are both out of practice squad elevations and the team has strong depth at outside linebacker, so Sanders could help the team the most at inside linebacker.

If they believe his best fit is as an edge defender, though, it wouldn’t make sense to play Sanders out of position. We’ll see how Denver handles his position in the coming days. Sanders could make his 2024 debut as soon as Monday when the Broncos host the Cleveland Browns in Week 13.

Saints designate two players to return from injury lists

Nephi Sewell and Shane Lemieux have 21 days to return to the New Orleans Saints’ active roster. What would be their role upon return?

The New Orleans Saints will be getting pieces back from injury that will add depth to the linebacker corps and offensive line very soon. New Orleans has opened the 21-day window for linebacker Nephi Sewell and offensive lineman Shane Lemieux.

Sewell’s immediate role will be on special teams upon his return from a torn ACL. Demario Davis, Willie Gay Jr., and Pete Werner will lead the charge at linebacker, but Sewell could compete with Anfernee Orji and D’Marco Jackson for reps in case of injury.

Lemieux is an interesting case. He replaced Erik McCoy in the starting lineup after McCoy’s injury versus the Eagles. Shortly after, Lemieux went to injured reserve with an ankle injury. Lemieux could return McCoy is available. If so, would the Saints turn back to Lemieux over Connor McGovern? McCoy’s availability will determine if New Orleans even has to answer that question.

These players have three weeks to be placed on the active roster, otherwise their season is over. That extends to the Saints bye week, so the latest we should see Sewell or Lemieux is Week 13 versus the Los Angeles Rams.

Seahawks RT’s Abe Lucas and George Fant to return to practice

Seahawks RT’s Abe Lucas and George Fant to return to practice

For what feels like a lifetime at this point, the Seattle Seahawks finally received good news when it comes to the health of their offensive line! On Wednesday it was reported both Abe Lucas and George Fant are officially returning to practice after missing extended time.

Lucas began the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list due to lingering recovery from knee surgery he underwent in January. Lucas’ health has been a growing concern for the Seahawks, as he missed eleven games last year, and has already been out for seven in 2024. Still, it is a good sign he is finally able to get back to practice.

Head coach Mike Macdonald did mention that while Lucas is back at practice, he is not gearing up to return to games just yet. Sadly, this does include this coming weekend’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

As for George Fant, Lucas’ immediate backup, it is also positive he is returning to practice. Like Lucas last year, Fant was injured in Seattle’s Week 1 game, and was placed on injured reserve in late September.

Both players now have a 21-day window of practice to prove they are capable of being activated to the 53-man roster. If they are unable to get ready by then, they will be shutdown for the remainder of the season.

Hopefully, they will not need the entirety of the 21 days allotted to them. While rookie Michael Jerrell played admirably in his start last weekend, the Seahawks need both Lucas and Fant back in action to help this struggling offensive line.

Seahawks RT Abe Lucas to start the season on PUP list

Seahawks RT Abe Lucas to start the season on PUP list

The Seattle Seahawks have officially set their 53-man roster. We now know who will be on the sidelines for when the Seahawks host the Denver Broncos in Week 1 on September 8th. However, with knowing who is on the final roster, comes with the realization of who was cut/waived… or added to the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Unfortunately, among those is right tackle Abe Lucas, who will begin the 2024 season on the PUP list, alongside safety Jerrick Reed II and defensive tackle Cam Young.

This development for Lucas is, sadly, not all that surpising. Last week, head coach Mike Macdonald gave an injury update to his standout right tackle, and it was hardly optomistic. When asked if Lucas would be ready to go for their Week 1 game against Denver, Macdonald responded with “Right now, I probably don’t want to answer that question.”

At this point, Macdonald already has.

Although it is not surprising, it is still regrettable that Lucas is still dealing with a knee issue he tried to have cleaned up with surgery this offseason. It is year three of Lucas’ NFL tenure and already his health is a considerable point of concern. When healthy, Lucas is arguably Seattle’s best offensive lineman, but his availability is becoming increasingly questionable.

If this health trend continues to go south, Seahawks general manager John Schneider may need to start putting together a contigency plan for Lucas’ long term replacement.

When can NFL players return from the reserve/PUP list?

Players who begin the season on the reserve/PUP list have to sit out the first four games of the season before being eligible to return.

When the Denver Broncos set their initial 53-man roster later today, they will have two candidates for the reserve/physically unable to perform list: linebacker Drew Sanders (Achilles) and safety Delarrin Turner-Yell (ACL).

Players who are sidelined with injuries during training camp are eligible for the active/PUP list. Once the regular season begins, those players transition to the reserve/PUP list if they are not yet cleared to play.

Once on the reserve/PUP list, a player must sit out at least the first four games of the season. After four weeks, players have a five-week window to return to practice. Once they return to practice, the player then has a 21-day window to return to the active roster.

If the player does not return to practice within nine weeks, he will spend the entire season on reserve. And if he returns to practice but is not activated within the 21-day window, the player will remain on reserve for the season.

Health permitting, we could see Sanders and Turner-Yell return to the active roster with the Broncos later this season.

Broncos expected to place 2 players on reserve/PUP list

The Broncos are expected to place Drew Sanders and Delarrin Turner-Yell on the reserve/PUP list, ruling them out for at least four games.

As the Denver Broncos begin trimming the 91-player squad down to a 53-man roster, two roster moves should be easy decisions.

The Broncos are expected to move linebacker Drew Sanders (Achilles) and safety Delarrin Turner-Yell (ACL) from the active/physically unable to perform list to the reserve/PUP list. Sanders and Turner-Yell won’t count against the 53-man roster once moved to the reserve list.

Sanders and Turner-Yell were on the active/PUP list for all of training camp while rehabbing from their respective 2023 injuries. PUP players who are not cleared in time for the regular season are moved to the reserve list.

Sanders and Turner-Yell will be required to sit out the first four games of the 2024 season. After that, they will have a five-week window to return to practice. Once they begin practicing, PUP players have a 21-day window to return to the active roster.

If the five-week or 21-day windows pass without the player being activated, he will spend the entire season on reserve.

DJ Reader is activated from the PUP list ahead of roster cutdowns

Reader will now count on the 53-man roster and is eligible to play in Week 1

One of the mysteries of the Detroit Lions’ 53-man roster construction was solved on Sunday. The Lions announced that veteran defensive tackle DJ Reader has been activated from the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list.

Reader joins the active roster now that he’s cleared his physical. The 30-year-old nose tackle has been sidelined all offseason as he recovers from a torn quadriceps suffered in 2023 while Reader was playing for the Cincinnati Bengals.

No. 98 was out at practice on Wednesday and working with trainers to try and get ready for the regular season. Reader is expected to start next to Alim McNeill on the defensive interior.

Now that the Lions have activated Reader, he is no longer eligible to stay on the PUP list and miss the first four games. That will take up a roster spot on the 53-man squad, which is due to be finalized by 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Saints to ramp up Juwan Johnson ‘slowly but surely’

Dennis Allen says the Saints are taking the slow and safe route with Juwan Johnson, but he acknowledges the value in the timing of Johnson’s return:

New Orleans Saints tight end Juwan Johnson returned to practice on Tuesday. It was the team’s first open practice at Yulman Stadium, and fans were treated to something special. Publicly, Johnson’s path to return took expedited turn north when he was removed from the physically unable to perform list.

Now that Johnson has returned, Saints head coach Dennis Allen says the plan is to “slowly but surely start to ramp him up.” They’re excited to have him back. Johnson’s return comes at a good time for the team.

“We need him, we need (Rashid) Shaheed, we need some of these players that we’re counting on in the passing game, so we can get the timing and the rhythm in the passing game,” Allen said after practice.

Johnson has missed the entirety of camp while recovering from offseason foot surgery. These two weeks before the season opener will be vital for him actually getting reps in the new offense. He’s surely continued to study and learn the playbook, but there’s no replacement for actually running the plays.

Dan Campbell offers injury updates on the Lions defenders on the PUP list

Dan Campbell offers injury updates on Lions defenders Brian Branch, Marcus Davenport and DJ Reader on the PUP list

The Detroit Lions have three key defensive players starting training camp on the physically unable to perform list. Projected starters Brian Branch, Marcus Davenport and DJ Reader are all idle to start the summer sessions.

Based on Dan Campbell’s press conference to kick off the training camp on Wednesday morning, none of the conditions seem like long-term concerns for the Lions.

Campbell indicated that Branch and Davenport would be working out in the walkthrough portion of practice on Wednesday. That’s a sign they are very close to ready to roll.

“We feel like everybody’s really doing well,” Campbell said. “On schedule for where we pictured them to be.”

Reader, the team’s top defensive tackle addition, is coming off a torn quadriceps that he suffered in December last year while playing with the Bengals. He needs a little more time, something Campbell indicates the Lions are perfectly willing to give him.

“We’re not in any hurry with him,” Coach Campbell stated. “But he’s doing well, getting his strength back. The injury is healed. It’s just a matter of getting him to that point where now we feel comfortable getting him out there and competing.”

Campbell added that “Davenport is a little closer than Branch is” to being cleared off the PUP list.

Panthers place 5th-round rookie on PUP list to start training camp

Chau Smith-Wade was the Panthers fifth-round pick.

According to NFL reporter Mike Kaye, the Carolina Panthers placed rookie cornerback Chau Smith-Wade on the PUP list at the start of training camp. The team also placed veteran wide receiver Cam Sims on the pup as well.

The Panthers selected the former Washington State star in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft. Most NFL draft writers and pundits considered Smith-Wade a bargain pick.

There’s been no official word on the nature of his injury or the severity of Smith-Wade’s injury. The Panthers traded away starting cornerback Donte Jackson at the start of free agency so the addition of Smith-Wade could be important for depth, especially as a nickel cornerback.

Here are all of the Panthers 2024 NFL draft picks:

First round – WR Xavier Legette

Second round –  RB Jonathon Brooks

Third round – LB Trevin Wallace

Fourth round – TE Ja’Tavion Sanders

Fifth round – CB Chau Smith-Wade

Sixth round – DT Jaden Crumedy

Seventh round –  LB Michael Barrett
