Clive’s voice actor says Final Fantasy 16 saved his life

Ben Starr, who voices Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy 16, says Square Enix’s RPG saved his life in a difficult time and added depth to Clive

Ben Starr, who voices Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy 16, says Square Enix’s RPG saved his life in a difficult time. Starr made the comments during an interview with Kinda Funny Games, after a viewer asked what outside inspirations he drew on to bring Clive to life.

Starr said his work on the game coincided with his father’s death, and giving voice to Clive’s own grief and loss helped him come to terms with his own situation.

“Let’s get real,” Starr said. “This game means a lot to me. My dad died during the making of this game, and there’s a lot of loss that Clive goes through, I’m sorry to get heavy but it’s true. It’s amazing how much this game allowed me to process that loss into something good and creative.”

Starr said he wanted to vocalize as much of his pain as possible, not just to process his feelings, but to make it a memorial to his father as well.

“Clive saved my life,” he said. “This game saved my life. The last time I ever spoke to my dad was on the way to recording this game. He was the guy who first brought me Final Fantasy 8. He was the guy who supported me… who I look up to.”

Square Enix let him be as expressive as he could, and Starr said the result is a character who’s as much his father as he is Starr himself.

“I wouldn’t be here doing this if it weren’t for him, because he brought me that game… and changed my life.”

Final Fantasy 16 launches on June 22, 2023, as a PS5 exclusive.

PS Plus games for June 2023 include Far Cry 6 and a PSP classic

Sony announced the PS Plus games for June 2023, including Far Cry 6 and a hit PSP game, and said that PS5 cloud streaming tests are underway

Sony announced the PS Plus games for June 2023 in a new blog post, including Far Cry 6 and a hit PSP game, and said that PS5 cloud streaming tests are underway for PS Plus Premium members. The feature would function similarly to Xbox Game Pass’ cloud gaming platform, where subscribers could stream their PS5 games and game trials – and eventually their retro games as well – on their chosen device. That probably will include PlayStation’s Project Q at some point.

On the game front, here’s what you can expect to be available on PS5 and PS4 for Premium and Extra members starting June 20, 2023:

  • Far Cry 6 (PS4/PS5)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge (PS4/PS5)
  • Rogue Legacy 2 (PS4/PS5)
  • Inscryption (PS4/PS5)
  • Soulstice (PS5)
  • Tacoma (PS4)
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (PS4)
  • Killing Floor 2 (PS4)

There’s also a game trial for WWE 2K23 on PS4.

Other games include Vampire The Masquerade – Coteries of New York and A Hat in Time, and the young and young at heart can look forward to My Friend Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol Mighty Pups: Save Adventure Bay.

Premium subscribers are getting the hit PSP game Killzone Liberation along with Worms and the rather obscure Herc’s Mission, both originally for PS1. It’s a somewhat skimpy lineup, but at least there’s something new from the PSP library at last.

Finally, Sony is celebrating one year of the new PS Plus model with over a week of activities offering incentives such as PlayStation Stars rewards and new avatars.

Insomniac announces Spider-Man 2 release date at Summer Game Fest

After a gameplay tease at the PlayStation Showcase, Insomniac finally announced the Spider-Man 2 release date at Summer Game Fest

After a gameplay tease at the PlayStation Showcase, Insomniac finally announced the Spider-Man 2 release date at Summer Game Fest. Spider-Man 2 will launch on Oct. 20, 2023, for PS5. It turns out Venom’s voice actor wasn’t quite right after all.

Summer Game Fest showrunner Geoff Keighley called the game a PS5 exclusive, though if it’s like Insomniac’s first Spider-Man, we’ll likely see a PC port at some point.

Insomniac creative director Bryan Intihar also spoke a bit more about what to expect from Spider-Man 2 and what the team’s goals are for it. Spider-Man 2 will expand the Spiderverse, they say, by including more and different types of heroes and villains compared to the original game. Kraven, for example, isn’t a superhero and doesn’t even have an evil agenda. He’s just an exceptional, unhinged hunter who arrives in New York City to find exciting new prey.

The Symbiote Suit will also allow the team to explore new story mechanics and narrative themes, and while Insomniac didn’t say what those are, it’s kinda easy to guess. The gameplay reveal during the PlayStation Showcase centered on a moody Peter Parker, and the Symbiote Suit has a dark history in Spider-Man, one where the wearer rarely remains untouched by its shadowy nature.

As for who Venom is, Insomniac is still keeping that a secret. We do know, however, that Spider-Man 2 will swap between Miles and Peter’s viewpoints, with a blend of genres and styles – including horror and stealth – that weren’t present in the original.

Sony’s Days of Play Sale 2023 discounts some of the best PS5 games

The 2023 PlayStation Days of Play sale is live now, with discounts on some of the best PS5 games and even PS Plus subscriptions

The 2023 PlayStation Days of Play sale is live now, with discounts on some of the best PS5 games and even PS Plus subscriptions. The annual summer sale runs through June 13, 2023, and also extends to merchandise and a handful of games on Sony’s PlayStation Direct website.

Headlining the sale are Sony’s premium games, including God of War: Ragnarok and The Last of Us Part 1, both down to $48.69 from their usual $69.99. Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 are discounted from $59.99 to $38.89, though you can save $10 on Forbidden West by getting the PS4 version and downloading the free digital upgrade.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is down to $29.39, as is Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and you can grab Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales ultimate edition for $38.39, which includes Spider-Man Remastered. If you need to catch up before Spider-Man 2, now’s the time to do it.

Several third-party games had their prices docked as well. Red Dead Redemption 2 is down to its usual sale price of $19.79, while Sonic Frontiers is going for $35.99, and Forspoken is on sale for $34.99. Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga is going for $23.99, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and No Man’s Sky are down to $29.99 each. No Man’s Sky also includes a hefty amount of free updates and expansions added to the game over the past few years.

If you’re keen on joining Sony’s PS Plus subscription service, you can get a 25 percent discount on any 12-month plan – Essential, Extra, or Premium. It has to be the 12-month plan, though. The discount isn’t available for the monthly or three-month options.

While some retailers are offering sales on PS4 and PS5 games, it looks like PlayStation’s PC catalogue isn’t joining in the discounts. They remain the usual prices on Steam.

You can check out the full list of discounts across every category on the PlayStation Network website.

PlayStation announces Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart PC release date

The PS5 hit Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is coming to PC, and you won’t have to wait long for it either

The PS5 hit Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is coming to PC, and you won’t have to wait long for it either. Porting studio Nixxes Software, which also handled the Marvel’s Spider-Man PC release, announced that the Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart PC port will launch July 26, 2023, on Steam and the Epic Games Store with a range of PC-specific features.

Like most of PlayStation’s PC ports, Rift Apart on Steam will include ray tracing, lighting, and shadow options with several quality settings that suit your computer’s capabilities. It also supports ultrawide settings with 21:9, 32:9, and 48:9 ratios for triple-monitor setups.

Ratchet and Clank’s Steam version unlocks the framerate, supports several upscaling options – NVIDIA DLSS 3, AMD FSR 2, Intel XeSS and Insomniac’s temporal injection – and includes the expected support for keyboard-and-mouse controls or any controller you can normally use with Steam or Epic. If you use a DualSense, you get the same haptics you’d experience with the PS5 version as well.

Nixxes didn’t say whether Ratchet and Clank will be verified on Steam Deck, though most of PlayStation’s other PC ports have been.

You can pre-order the game on Steam or Epic and get the Pixelizer Weapon and Carbonox armor set as a bonus. Five armor sets that were deluxe-edition exclusives in the PS5 version are included outright in the PC port and an extra five new sets inspired by previous games in Ratchet and Clank history.

Meanwhile, Insomniac is still working on Spider-Man 2, which still doesn’t have a release date – but it did get a shiny new gameplay trailer during the May State of Play.

May PlayStation Showcase recap: Spider-Man, AC Mirage, and more

The May PlayStation Showcase has come and gone, with Spider-Man 2, Dragon’s Dogma, Metal Gear, Assassin’s Creed, and a whole lot more

The May PlayStation Showcase has come and gone, bringing with it over 60 minutes of announcements, reveals, trailers, and teases for upcoming PS5 games. While we might not have gotten everything we expected – no Spider-Man 2 release date, for example – the showcase highlighted a broad range of games from Sony’s first-party studios and third parties alike. Metal Gear is back, Bungie is reviving a classic, and Square Enix is doing something that looks a lot like Splatoon.

Here’s everything you might have missed from the May PlayStation Showcase.

Sony’s Project Q is a different kind of PlayStation handheld

PlayStation’s Jim Ryan unveiled Project Q, a new kind of PlayStation handheld that’s built around streaming

PlayStation’s Jim Ryan unveiled Project Q, a new kind of PlayStation handheld that’s built around streaming PS5 games. If you were hoping for a PSP or Vita successor, it looks like this ain’t it.

The new device is set to release sometime later in 2023, though – as with Spider-Man 2 – Ryan didn’t announce a specific date or an expected price point.

PlayStation’s Project Q features an 8-inch screen in between two halves of a DualSense controller – essentially a Backbone with DualSense sides. Ryan said Project Q will support all DualSense functions, so you’ll get the same haptics as you would while playing with the regular controller. How those features might affect battery life – and what the battery life might even be like – Ryan didn’t say.

In fact, Ryan didn’t really say much about Project Q at all – whether it uses Remote Play, if it supports all games, or whether streaming will be tied to higher tiers of the PlayStation Plus subscription. There’s not even an accompanying post on the PlayStation Blog to provide further information.

Ryan said there’s more information to come, though when that might happen is unclear. Perhaps Sony will share more after the hubbub around Summer Game Fest fades away.

Remedy announces Alan Wake 2 release date during State of Play

The Alan Wake 2 release date couldn’t be more timely, as Remedy is launching its psychological horror game during spooky season

Remedy announced the Alan Wake 2 release date during Sony’s May State of Play presentation, and it’s quite a timely launch. Alan Wake 2 launches on Oct. 17, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Epic Games Store.

Alan Wake 2 follows two protagonists this time. One is Alan Wake himself, a horror writer lost in a nightmare world who tries escaping from his prison by writing a story. The other is investigator Saga Anderson, dispatched to Bright Falls on a mission to uncover the truth behind a series of grisly murders. Saga stumbles across a horror book that eventually begins coming to life around her and leading her back to Alan’s mysterious disappearance 13 years previously.

Remedy said you can play Saga’s and Alan’s stories in whatever order you like, as they both foreshadow each other and provide an alternate perspective on events. Anderson’s story takes place in three locations: Bright Falls, Cauldron Lake, and a small town called Watery. Alan, meanwhile, remains trapped in the hellish Dark Place.

The horror game might be a sequel, but Remedy says the horror game is designed so newcomers to the Alan Wake world can pick it up with no previous knowledge

If you’re hoping for a physical release, you’re in for a disappointment. Remedy is sticking to digital only to keep costs down and avoid having to ship a disc that requires a download.

New Spider-Man 2 trailer highlights darker tone – but no release date

Sony showcased a lengthy new Soider-Man 2 trailer during the May State of Play with gameplay galore, but no release date for the Marvel game

Sony showcased a lengthy new Spider-Man 2 trailer during the May State of Play, and while it shows a lot of what to expect from the Marvel game, there’s still no Spider-Man 2 release date. The trailer opens with a lengthy cinematic that eventually reveals the main villain – and it isn’t Venom.

It’s Kraven, an unhinged hunter who first debuted in 1964 and vowed to capture Spider-Man to prove he’s the greatest hunter of them all. Except this time, apparently, he’s also trying to catch a giant lizard monster who’s rampaging through New York City, while Peter Parker is blending in as a villain and has a bit of an angry streak as well.

There’s a lot going on, and while much of the action looks familiar – setpiece chase scenes and lots of banter, for example – it looks like Spider-Man 2 is dipping its toes into a few other genres. One scene starring Miles involves a careful stealth segment, and there’s even a tinge of horror built into some of the game’s environments.

Peter and Miles get plenty of new abilities and handy gadgets as well, including a device that reaches out and ensnares several foes in webs and some Venom-like powers for Peter.

How all this comes together, we’ll eventually find out in fall 2023. Despite the Venom voice actor’s belief that Spider-Man 2 will launch on PS5 in September, Insomniac is still sticking to a general fall release frame.
