Report: Cowboys expected to make Al Harris assistant head coach

From @ToddBrock24f7: Harris interviewed for the Cowboys’ DC job and was blocked from speaking with Washington; he’ll get a promotion for staying.

Most Cowboys fans feel the team has shown up embarrassingly late to the free agency party, watching almost ten players walk out the door while adding just one outsider and re-signing four of their own.

But as it turns out, the club may still be tweaking their 2024 coaching staff.

Defensive backs coach Al Harris is expected to be promoted, with an addition of assistant head coach being tacked on to his current title. That news comes courtesy of NFL insider Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, who cited a source in a Sunday night tweet.

Harris joined the Cowboys staff in 2020, reuniting with Mike McCarthy, who had coached him during his playing days in Green Bay. Harris has been a rising star within the coaching ranks, thanks in large part to blockbuster seasons from cornerbacks Trevon Diggs in 2022 and DaRon Bland in 2023.

The 49-year-old Harris interviewed for the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator role after the departure of Dan Quinn. Quinn then showed interest in possibly hiring Harris away to join his new staff in Washington, but the Cowboys blocked the Commanders’ interview request, electing instead to retain Harris as part of new DC Mike Zimmer’s staff.

Now it appears that a significant bump in title is coming Harris’s way as a show of what he means to the organization.

Saints announce staff changes, promote Khai Harley to assistant GM

New Orleans Saints announce staff changes for 2023 season, promote salary cap specialist Khai Harley to assistant general manager:

This is cool: the New Orleans Saints announced a couple of staff changes and additions on Tuesday, with the most notable news being a promotion for Khai Harley. The salary cap specialist still retains his title as vice president of football operations — but he’s now pulling double-duty as their assistant general manager.

Mickey Loomis is still on top of the organizational chart as general manager and executive vice president, but Harley now shares a title with Jeff Ireland as assistant GM to Loomis. Ireland’s main focus remains on the college scouting department, but now both he and Harley carry the assistant GM title.

Loomis is the longest-tenured general manager in the league. He’ll turn 67 this year. He won’t be around forever, and it’s very possible that the Saints are setting up someone like Harley to succeed him in a couple of years. Ireland also has experience at the top of the organization from his six-year run with the Miami Dolphins. Either way, this promotion is a well-deserved recognition for a key member of the front office. Harley has done a great job navigating the salary cap and the CBA to keep the Saints competitive year in and year out.

What about the other moves? For the most part, the Saints confirmed additions who were previously reported during the summer like defensive assistant coach Matt Giordano, analytics director Zach Stuart, and football administration director Scott Kuhn. They also shuffled the scouting department with Matt Phillips becoming an area scout and Will Martinez taking over as NFL combine scout.

But a couple of other new hires stand out. Former Louisiana Tech assistant to the head coach and NFL liaison Ziad Qubti is joining the team as their new college scouting coordinator under Ireland, with Rishi Desai (former Ole Miss director of scouting and an LSU graduate) also joining the scouting department. It’s good to see minority candidates getting these opportunities, especially with the NFL awarding compensatory draft picks when they’re hired to executive positions. If they help the organization find good players and develop into sought-after GM candidates in their own right, them leaving someday would bring back valuable draft assets to New Orleans. It’s a win-win.

Alabama assistant, Bryan Hodgson, hired for Arkansas State head coaching job

Alabama assistant set to take Arkansas State head coaching job

Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball program are finally starting to feel some of the pain that Nick Saban and the football team have felt for nearly a decade. Alabama assistant basketball coach, Bryan Hodgson, is set to leave the Tide at the end of the year to take over the Arkansas State program.

It is a major loss for the Tide as he has been a crucial member of the staff and a key recruiter, but it was a well-earned promotion and Tide fans should feel happy for him. Hodgson has been with Oats dating all the way back to their time in Buffalo and Oats has always spoken very highly of Hodgson.

Hodgson now has the task of turning the 13-20 Arkansas State Red Wolves into a tournament team, but first he will continue to chase a ring with the Tide.

Seahawks expected to promote Larry Izzo to special teams coordinator

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to promote Larry Izzo to special teams coordinator following Brian Schneider’s departure for Jacksonville.

Following the conclusion of the regular season, hirings and firings are happening all over the National Football League, including in Seattle with the Seahawks’ staff.

Still in the hunt for an offensive coordinator to replace Brian Schottenheimer after parting ways with him last week, the Seahawks are now having to determine a new special teams coordinator as well.

Citing a league source, NFL Network analyst Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Jaguars are expected to hire Seattle’s Brian Schneider as their special teams coordinator.

With Schneider leaving Seattle, Pelissero is also reporting the Seahawks are exected to promote from within.

“With Brian Schneider departing for Jacksonville, the #Seahawks are expected to promote Larry Izzo to replace Schneider as special teams coordinator, per source,” Pelissero tweeted on Friday.

Izzo had filled in during the 2020 season when Schnieder had taken a leave of absence for personal reasons.

Report: Cowboys to promote DT Justin Hamilton to 53-man roster

The Dallas Cowboys have finally addressed the vacancy left on the roster from losing DT Trysten Hill to an ACL tear. The second-year interior defender was lost in the Week 5 win over the New York Giants, but his injury has been lost in the shuffle as most of the attention has been paid to QB Dak Prescott.

But the Cowboys, already thin after losing free-agent signing Gerald McCoy in the offseason, desperately need help on the defensive line. Rookie Neville Gallimore has been inactive for two weeks due to coaches decision, and Tyrone Crawford hasn’t played at the same level as prior to his 2019 hip surgeries. The position is thin. Instead of moving in anyone from the outside, head coach Mike McCarthy is promoting from within, bringing Justin Hamilton up from the practice squad.

The Cowboys have taken a strange approach to roster management this season. Since Week 2, the Cowboys have rolled with less than the maximum 53 players on their roster. On gameday, there isn’t an impact, but week after week the club has neglected to bring in outside help in search of the proverbial diamond in the rough.

In addition, the club has waited until the last possible minute to move players to injured reserve, even though their fates are long known. Week 6 has been as glaring an example as any. The team entered Week 5 with just 51 players on their roster, then lost Prescott and Hill in Sunday’s win, knocking them down to 49.

Garrett Gilbert was signed earlier in the week, and moving Hamilton brings that number back to 51. The activation of Leighton Vander Esch puts the number at 52.

Randy Gregory will be added back to the roster following the game, bringing the total to 53 again, but there’s been several weeks where Dallas could have been bringing in players to try and help a struggling defense and offensive line.

Background

(This information originally appeared in our 2020 Player Profile article from Ben Grimaldi.)

Hamilton signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent and from 2015 and stayed in western New York until early in the 2017 season. He was then on the practice squads of the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles. It wasn’t until late September of 2017 that Hamilton was finally promoted to the Eagles’ active roster.

During the 2017 season, Hamilton played in three games for the Eagles and picked up a half-sack before being cut and re-signed to the Eagles’ practice squad again. However, the Kansas City Chiefs poached Hamilton from Philadelphia in December and he started in one game to end the year.

Hamilton appeared in four games with the Chiefs in 2018, but was released by the team in August of 2019 before their Super Bowl season began.

The Cowboys entered the picture in October of 2019 when Crawford’s injury sent him to the sideline for the year.

However, it was short-lived stay. Bennett’s addition made Hamilton expendable and Dallas released him in October. The team brought Hamilton back on a futures contract in late January.
