Chiefs sign OT Prince Tega Wanogho to reserve/future contract

A smart move by the Chiefs’ front office to bring back a good developmental player.

A day after being released from the practice squad, OT Prince Tega Wanogho is back with the Kansas City Chiefs. This time it’s on a reserve/future contract, though.

According to the NFL’s transaction report, the Chiefs signed Wanogho to a reserve/future deal. The former 2020 sixth-round draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles had his practice squad contract expire following the conclusion of Philly’s season. Instead of signing back with Philly, he opted to join the Chiefs’ practice squad ahead of their AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills. Now, the 6-5 and 305-pound tackle is guaranteeing himself a chance to compete for a spot on the 2021 53-man roster in Kansas City.

If you’re not familiar with reserve/future contracts, they allow players to sign with teams prior to the beginning of the new league year. That means that Wanogho won’t count toward the Chiefs’ roster until the new league year begins and the 90-man offseason roster is opened for the team.

This is a smart move by the Chiefs as they look to reinforce depth along the offensive line in the future. They have a number of players on expiring contracts and given the constraints of a lessened salary cap due to COVID-19, they’re going to have to hit on some of these types of developmental players.

Wanogho marks the fifth player to sign a reserve/future contract with the Chiefs, joining WR Chad Williams, WR Antonio Callaway, QB Jordan Ta’amu and QB Anthony Gordon. It’s been pretty heavy on the offensive side of the ball so far for Kansas City in the way of reserve/future deals.

Chiefs release OT Prince Tega Wanogho from practice squad

A promising player released from the Chiefs’ practice squad.

A surprising roster move from the Kansas City Chiefs came in on Monday following their AFC Championship Game victory over the Buffalo Bills.

The Chiefs released OT Prince Tega Wanogho from the practice squad per the NFL’s official transaction wire. The former Philadelphia Eagles sixth-round had signed to the practice squad just a week ago. The timing of this move is perhaps the strangest part, as it comes a day after starting LT Eric Fisher suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.

Wanogho was expected to be someone that could perhaps contribute in the future for Kansas City. He was a highly-touted player coming out of Auburn, but a knee injury flagged at the Senior Bowl saw his draft stock plummet.  It’s still possible that Wanogho returns on a reserve/future contract, but it’s unclear if that’s the plan at this time.

As for what the Chiefs might do with Wanogho’s spot on the practice squad, it’s possible that they intend to bring in a veteran player along the offensive line. The team recently worked out former Seahawks OL Justin Britt, who has started games at right tackle, left guard and center during his six-year NFL career. That’d be a valuable player to have in the event the team suffers another injury along the offensive line in the practice week leading up to the game.

For the time being, Kansas City hasn’t made a corresponding move on the practice squad, but expect one to happen in the coming days.

Chiefs sign former Eagles 6th-round pick Prince Tega Wanogho to practice squad

Chiefs sign former Eagles 6th-round pick Prince Tega Wanogho to practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs quietly added young talent to their roster on Saturday, signing former Eagles 2020 sixth-round pick, Prince Tegao Wonogho to their practice squad.

Tego Wanogho visited the Chiefs earlier this week.

An offensive tackle with plenty of upsides, Tega Wanogho was selected by the Eagles in the sixth round (210th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft. Originally born in Nigeria, Wanogho was a two-time All-SEC selection at Auburn and started 32 games during his four-year career with the Tigers.

Wanogho spent the 2020 season on the Eagles practice squad and was promoted to the 53-man roster for the Week 17 season finale against the Washington Football Team, playing just two snaps on special teams.

Wanogho originally signed a four-year deal after the draft, but he was waived at the end of training camp and signed to the practice squad.

Wanogho’s practice squad contract expired on Monday, making him an unrestricted free agent able to sign with any NFL team.

Eagles OL, former ‘Bama coach: ‘These Auburn guys are killing me’

The rivalry never dies even if it is up in Philadelphia.

The rivalry never goes away, does it?

Former Auburn offensive lineman Jack Driscoll and Prince Tega Wanogho were both selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in this year’s NFL Draft. Their position coach for the NFC East team? Jeff Stoutland, who coached at rival Alabama for two seasons prior to joining the Eagles.

It seems that the two former Tigers are winning the mind battle as they achieved something that is rare: getting a ‘Bama guy to say “War Eagle!”

“These Auburn guys are killing me,” Stoutland said on Friday. “I coached at Alabama, so they made me say ‘War Eagle’ yesterday. It would kill me to say that, but they got me to say it, and they’re doing a really nice job.”

It was a sort of reward for the two lineman doing a good job.

“The whole War Eagle thing, me and Prince did a good rep,” Driscoll said during an online press conference. “I think it was we were doing some sort of board drill or whatnot and we both had a really good rep, and he said ‘War Eagle.’ I’m not going to bank on him saying that again, but I guess it was nice that he said it once.”

During the 2020 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles placed value on speed and athleticism while building a youthful roster around Carson Wentz.

Even after drafting a quarterback, a safety, three wide receivers, two offensive linemen, two linebackers, and an edge rusher, it’s still unknown how many of the 10 draft picks will have a true impact as rookies.
