Oklahoma Women’s Basketball inside Top 10 of preseason Coaches Poll

Where did Oklahoma Women’s Basketball land in the Preseason Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll?

It’s a new era for Oklahoma Women’s Basketball as the Sooners prepare to take on the challenge of the SEC. Coming off their third straight NCAA tournament appearance, [autotag]Jennie Baranczyk[/autotag] enters a conference featuring the last three national champions; South Carolina (2022 and 2024) and LSU (2023).

But the Sooners have a good and experienced roster to wade into the waters of the historically strong SEC women’s basketball league. A conference with elite teams and historic blue bloods. Can the Sooners take the next step to join the sport’s elite?

The Oklahoma Sooners enter the 2024-2025 season as one of the top 10 teams in the nation, according to the USA TODAY Sports preseason Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

Defending national champion South Carolina comes in at No. 1, earning 27 of a possible 31 votes after their undefeated 2023-2024 season. They’re followed by UConn, USC, Texas, and Notre Dame to round out the top five.

UConn was knocked off by Caitlin Clark and Iowa in the final four. Juju Watkins and USC won the Pac-12 tournament last year before getting beat by UConn in the Elite 8. They’re the team to beat in the expanded Big Ten. Texas won the Big 12 tournament title after falling short of Oklahoma in the regular season title race.

The Sooners are the fourth-highest-ranked SEC team in the poll. Seven SEC teams were included in the top 25.

Led by returning Big 12 Player of the Year [autotag]Skylar Vann[/autotag] and one of the top players in the transfer portal [autotag]Raegan Beers[/autotag], the Sooners are set to make another tournament appearance in 2024-2025. But the question the Sooners are facing is if they can make it to the Sweet 16 for the first time in Baranczyk’s tenure and the first time since 2013.

Notre Dame women’s basketball ranked high in preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Big things expected from this years team

The expectations are extremely high for Notre Dame women’s basketball his fall and winter, and that showed today in the preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

The Irish came in as the No. 5 team in the country, ranking behind South Carolina, Connecticut, USC, and Texas. There’s plenty of star power this year inside the top teams as the Juju Watkins of the Trojans, Paige Bueckers of the Huskies and Notre Dame’s [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag].

The Irish’s best player was recently named as a preseason All-American, who is coming off a fantastic freshman season. While Notre Dame didn’t get as far as they would have liked last year, losing to Oregon State in the Sweet 16, this coming season could see a return to the Final Four, the first since 2019.

This team has plenty of talent, and a star in the making in Hidalgo, which could very well result in a fantastic season for head coach Niele Ivey.

South Carolina takes top spot in preseason women’s basketball coaches poll

The USA TODAY Sports preseason women’s basketball coaches poll was released on Thursday. South Carolina, UConn, and USC are leading the way.

The NCAA women’s basketball season will officially tip-off on Monday, Nov. 4. Caitlin Clark might not be on the hardwood at the collegiate level this season but there is still plenty of exciting action that will take place. It will be up to players like JuJu Watkins of the USC Trojans to carry the torch this season.

The defending national champion South Carolina Gamecocks check in with the No. 1 spot in the USA TODAY Sports preseason coaches poll after finishing with a perfect 38-0 record under Dawn Staley. It was the first time she achieved perfection after coming close in 2020 and 2023 where South Carolina finished with just one loss in each of those seasons. 2020 ended early when the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19 and the 2023 team’s run at perfection was ended by Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Final Four.

South Carolina is joined by six other teams in the SEC to give them seven altogether. The Gamecocks edged out the UConn Huskies and USC Trojans for the top spot by a substantial margin. These three teams were the only ones to earn first-place votes. UConn will welcome back Paige Bueckers who bypassed the WNBA draft for another run at the title.

Defending national champion LSU Tigers check in at No. 2 in preseason poll

LSU comes in at No. 2, the SEC dominates the top 10.

It is almost baseball time again for college baseball. Last year’s national champions, the LSU Tigers are poised to defend their title with another run to Omaha. Jay Johnson’s squad loses Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews, but the reloaded team checks in at No. 2 behind the ACC’s Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Overall, the SEC has three of the top five teams with Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Texas A&M all among the top 10 teams in the country. Eight teams in the preseason USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll hail from the SEC. A future conference team, the Texas Longhorns checks in at No. 13.

The ACC is also well represented with Wake Forest at the top, and fellow in-state schools Duke, North Carolina, and North Carolina State all among the top 25. The Clemson Tigers check in at No. 9 overall and Virginia is No. 11 to give the conference six teams in the rankings.

USC ranked behind Michigan and Ohio State in USA TODAY Sports coaches poll

The preseason @USATODAYSports Coaches Poll has #USC trailing its future #B1G heavyweight competitors.

The USC Trojans were part of the 2023 preseason edition of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Where they specifically landed, however, will be a point of debate heading into one of the most anticipated USC seasons in recent memory.

The college football regular season is less than three weeks away for USC, which begins with a rare Week Zero game versus San Jose State on Aug. 26. The other top programs in the country won’t play until Week 1 on Labor Day weekend. USC and Notre Dame are the two high-profile national programs which will start a week earlier than everyone else.

We will share the poll results below, but first, one general “overview-style” note: Four Pac-12 teams cracked the top 15. That’s an indication of the quality and depth the Pac-12 has entering this final season in the conference’s football existence.

Here is the full set of rankings, from No. 25 down to No. 1, in the 2023 preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll:

Over/under 5 ACC teams in the final top 25? ESPN analysts weigh in

The preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA coaches poll, which was released on Monday, features a group of five ACC teams ranked among the top 25. Clemson leads the pack from the conference at No. 4, followed by No. 13 NC State, No. 16 Pitt, No. 17 Miami …

The preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA coaches poll, which was released on Monday, features a group of five ACC teams ranked among the top 25.

Clemson leads the pack from the conference at No. 4, followed by No. 13 NC State, No. 16 Pitt, No. 17 Miami and No. 19 Wake Forest.

The ACC’s five ranked teams are second-most among all conferences, behind only the SEC (six).

On ESPN’s College Football Live show this week, college football analyst Joey Galloway and SportsCenter commentator/sports betting analyst “Stanford” Steve Coughlin were asked if they feel like the ACC will have more than five teams, or less than five teams, ranked in the top 25 at the end of the college football season.

Here’s what they had to say:

Coughlin: “I think in the ACC, there’s a gap between these five teams and the rest, so I say the same amount of teams. I like these five teams a lot. They bring a lot to the table. When you talk about the ACC, you’ve got to start with the quarterbacks — every one of these teams has a really good one. Clemson, what are they going to do to rebound from last year? Wake Forest goes to the title game, and Pitt’s a team — I know they lost (Kenny) Pickett, but they bring back everybody else. I really like Pitt this year to stay ranked as a team. And NC State brings back as much as anybody in the conference. So, those teams are very, very sustainable to me.”

Galloway: “When you say Pitt brings back everybody, they’re missing a key receiver (Jordan Addison), also Pickett missing. I don’t know I feel great about Pitt. I am surprised, though, that the ACC has more ranked teams than the Big Ten. I don’t think that will be the same in the end. So, I will take the ACC will drop one team out. Not sure who it’s going to be. I think that the ACC, as you look at the conferences across the country, they seem to have more parity, they seem to have more teams that have the ability to get hot and have a great season. I think it was great last season to see what Wake Forest did. Until we look at the ACC, I’m expecting one of these teams to drop out of the rankings, and there’ll be one less by the time the end of the season rolls around.”

5. Who is, technically, overrated in the 2022 Coaches Poll?

Everyone too easily fires out the terms overrated and underrated when it comes to teams, players, tacos, and just about every other aspect of life. But for something to be overrated, it has to be rated.

The 2022 college football teams were just rated in the Preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll, and here are the five teams who appear to be ranked a tad bit too high.

No. 7 Texas A&M
This is a whole lot of respect being given to a team that has all the talent in the world, but is really, really, really young. Are the skill players strong enough? Can the team be more consistent? Can all the superstar recruits make an impact right away? This is hardly an egregiously high ranking, but top ten is a wee bit of a push for right now.

No. 10 Baylor
To be totally fair to the Coaches Poll, we have a chronic Baylor underrating problem, so this might just be dead on right. However, a top ten preseason nod is too much love considering the defending Big 12 champs have a whole lot of reworking and tweaking to do.
Baylor Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

No. 16 Pitt
Like Baylor, there’s a good chance we might be missing what everyone else is seeing. The pass rush will be fantastic, and Kedon Slovis is a fine replacement for Kenny Pickett, but for a team that found lightning in a bottle last season, this top 16 ranking is assuming it’ll all happen again. It’s a top 25 team, but 16 is a tad high.

No. 19 Wake Forest
Wake Forest will put up big numbers, be a ton of fun, and it’ll win a lot of games against the teams it’s supposed to beat, and one or two against the good teams, too. However, is it better than Wisconsin, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Ole Miss? Not really. Is it better than unranked Iowa, Penn State, Tennessee, BYU, LSU, or Auburn? Not really. No. 22 Cincinnati
It’s a good Cincinnati team, but a whole lot of great parts are gone – being ahead of Arkansas, Iowa, and a slew of other good Power Five programs is a bit too much respect. 22 isn’t terribly far off, but the ranking assumes it’s the best Group of Five program coming into the season. At the moment, UCF is close, Boise State and San Diego State are in that mix, and Houston – at least from the preseason look – should be higher than 25.
