Who’s overrated? FWIW, according to the CFN 2021 Preseason Rankings 1-130 – based on how good the teams are to start the season – the five most overrated teams are …

No. 7 Notre Dame
It’s hardly an egregious call considering the Irish reload now under Brian Kelly, but it’s a tad too high – at least to start the season. The offensive line is being rebuilt, Jack Coan is a college quarterback downgrade from Ian Book, and overall – to nitpick a bit too much – this is a top 15ish team more than top seven.

No. 10 Cincinnati
Power Five Snob Alert, Part 1. You beat as many Power Five teams in 2020 as Cincinnati did – but this is about 2021, of course. It’s a great team that really could beat Indiana and Notre Dame, but top ten overall is getting a tad carried away – for now. It’s a top 25 team to be sure, but … UCF might be every bit as strong in the AAC.

No. 16 Miami
Miami is just renting this space. In a perfect world, the Coaches Poll – and all polls – don’t punish teams for losing to the star of stars. Alabama is the overwhelming No. 1 in the Coaches Poll, it’s going to win the opener by a gajillion, and that means the Canes will end up where it probably should be preseason rankings-wise – around 25 – going into Week 2

Power Five Snob Alert, Part 2. No one championed the Ragin’ Cajuns more than I did after they were disrespected in poll after poll despite beating Iowa State in the opener, but … 1) I defy 94% of the pollsters to name one of the two NFL-caliber running backs the team lost. 2) Coastal Carolina is probably better. 3) Appalachian State is probably better – and it only got four votes.

Preseason coaches poll released

Having made six straight appearances in the College Football Playoff, Clemson figured to start the 2021 season at or near where it has finished the last handful of seasons. That designation is now official. The Tigers were ranked No. 2 in the AFCA …

Having made six straight appearances in the College Football Playoff, Clemson figured to start the 2021 season at or near where it has finished the last handful of seasons.

That designation is now official.

The Tigers were ranked No. 2 in the AFCA preseason coaches poll released Tuesday. Clemson went 10-2 last season en route to its sixth consecutive ACC title before falling to Ohio State in the CFP semifinals.

Clemson will open the season against Georgia on Sept. 4 in the Duke’s Mayo Classic in Charlotte.

CLEMSON, S.C. – United Soccer Coaches released its pre-season rankings, and Clemson Women’s Soccer comes in at No. 7 in the poll. Clemson is one of only two schools in the nation that are in the top 10 in both the men’s and women’s polls.

The Tigers return 2020 All-ACC performers Megan Bornkamp, Makenna Morris, Hal Hershfelt and Courtney Jones. The 2021 team consists of 16 returners and a highly talented recruiting class with nine freshmen and Cassidy Lindley, a transfer from Florida.

The 2021 campaign will mark the 11th season with Head Coach Eddie Radwanski at the helm alongside Associate Head Coach Jeff Robbins and Assistant Coach Siri Mullinix. The Tigers will compete in an exhibition match at Wake Forest on Monday, August 9 and will be at Historic Riggs Field for its first home match on Friday, August 13.

Before getting started, note that below is NOT the actual 2021 Preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll – it’s our prediction and projection of what it might be.

The preseason college football polls might not mean what they used to, but they’re still fun, and they’re still a great indicator of the expectations going into a season.

Clemson was the preseason No. 1 team in the 2019 and 2020 Coaches Polls. Ohio State was No. 2 in 2020, Alabama third, Georgia fourth, and LSU fifth.

Where was Notre Dame? The eventual College Football Playoff team started out tenth, Texas A&M was 13th, and UCF (21st) and Cincinnati (22nd) were the only preseason ranked teams outside of the Power Five.

What will the 2021 preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll rankings look like? Considering how insane 2020 was – and how wild the final rankings were – this might be the most interesting preseason top 25 in a while.

This is usually a whole lot easier – this might look totally ridiculous once the real thing comes out considering all the teams outside of the norm likely to be in.

It’s our call based on historical precedent, returning talent, and guessing how the coaches are perceiving teams and big brand names compared to some of 2020’s surprise stars.

Once the 2021 preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll is released, we’ll break it all down and do a deep dive analysis.
