Walter Clayton Jr. named to 2025 SEC Men’s Basketball Coaches Preseason Team

Walter Clayton Jr. was named to his second Preseason All-SEC First Team, this time by the coaches within the conference.

Southeastern Conference coaches named Florida guard [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. to the Preseason First Team All-SEC on Wednesday.

In the 20th year of voting, SEC men’s basketball coach named Alabama‘s Mark Sears the SEC Preseason Player of the Year. Sears joins Clayton, Auburn‘s Johni Broome, Tennessee‘s Zakai Zeigler and Texas A&M‘s Wade Taylor IV on the First Team — the same five players were named preseason first teamers by the media earlier in October.

The coaches also picked the same five players as the media for the second team. However, Florida forward [autotag]Alex Condon[/autotag] was omitted from the third team in favor of Texas’ Tre Johnson.

After breaking out at Florida last year, Clayton is considered an NBA draft prospect. He’ll be the Gators’ primary ball handler this year as he leads a three-way committee at point guard. Clayton averaged 17.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game with UF last season.

Four Gators named to Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team

Florida rostered isn’t loaded with Preseason All-Conference talent, but these four Gators are standing out among the rest.

The SEC released its three Preseason Coaches All-Conference Football Team rosters on Thursday, and four Florida Gators made the cut.

Running back [autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]., cornerback [autotag]Jason Marshall Jr[/autotag]. and punter [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag] made the Second Team, and kicker [autotag]Trey Smack[/autotag] earned Third Team honors. All four are returning players expected to lead their respective units.

Johnson has rushed for 800-plus yards in all three years of his college career, two of which came as a Gator. Last year, he split carries with Trevor Etienne, who is now with Georgia and earned a First Team nod. Fans were always going to compare the two, but this adds some fuel to the fire.

Marshall is a four-year veteran at Florida who has first-round draft hopes. He’s a former five-star recruit who hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, but he’s the clear No. 1 in the cornerbacks room in Gainesville this season.

Crawshaw and Smack are the two faces of the special team unit because they interact with the ball a lot. It’s not always up to them whether a play is a success, but they’ll receive all the praise (or criticism) after every kick.

Georgia placed a league-leading 15 players across the three rosters, followed by Alabama with 14 and Texas with 10. Twelve schools had at least one first-team All-SEC player (not Florida), and nine schools had multiple first-team selections.

All three lists can be found in their entirety here.

Trio of Gators make Preseason Coaches All-SEC Third Team

These three Gators will be instrumental in Florida football’s success tis fall.

This year’s Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team rosters were released on Tuesday, with a trio of Florida football players making the cut for the third team.

Sophomore running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag], junior cornerback [autotag]Jason Marshall Jr[/autotag]. and EDGE rusher [autotag]Princely Umanmielen[/autotag] earned those third-team honors, which adds to Umanmielen’s current list of preseason accolades. The 6-foot-5-inch, 254-pound defender has already been named to the Lombardi Award Watch List as well as the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List.

Etienne, brother of former Clemson Tigers standout and current NFL running back Travis Etienne, has high expectations coming into the season after a tidy true freshman campaign in 2022. His 719 yards on the ground ranked fourth-most by a freshman in program history and his 85-yard touchdown run was tied for the sixth-longest by an FBS running back last year.

Marshall is a former five-star recruit who has taken a while to ripen into the collegiate cornerback his talent has always projected. He played in all 26 games with 19 starts during his first two seasons, starting all 13 appearances last season, recording 52 tackles (35 solo), 11 pass breakups, three tackles for a loss and two interceptions.

Florida opens its 2023 schedule on the road against the Utah Utes on Thursday, Aug. 31, with a kickoff time of 8 p.m. EDT.
