Pete Carroll, Seahawks working to be prepared as possible to go forward

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is working diligently to prepare for what could be a virtual offseason as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Even the mighty NFL isn’t immune from the vast restrictions that have been put in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that is keeping people around the world inside their homes.

The league’s premier event, the NFL draft, will still take place this April but will be “fully virtual” to ensure the safety of all involved. The NFL offseason, however, prevents a number of challenges with all team facilities closed.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is doing what he can to stay ahead of the game, preparing as best he can should some restrictions be lifted in the near future.

“Well everything is kind of in flux right now,” Carroll told Sirius XM NFL Radio, per Pro Football Talk’s Curtis Crabtree. “We’ve set back the time frame to start but we’re getting ready for virtual offseason and all of that. We’re all working real hard to do that to get organized so that we can do it really well. We just have to be patient, but in the meantime we just kind of keep grinding and stay with the mentality kind of like that they could tell us next week that we’re on.

“We’re attempting to be as prepared as possible. We’re not saying ‘OK, we’ve got three or four weeks to figure this thing out.’ We’re not doing that. We’re just going for it.”

The NFL and NFLPA are working diligently to provide some sort of guidance for a virtual offseason, beginning with a “Pre-Phase One” that will be entirely voluntary.

NFL teams to begin ‘Pre-Phase One’ of the offseason

The NFL and NFLPA have agreed to a voluntary ‘Pre-Phase One’ of the offseason which includes virtual learning and training for players.

Things are wildly different around the National Football League as the coronavirus outbreak drastically impacts all facets of life across the nation. The league, however, has been committed to going forward whenever possible, including hosting the 2020 NFL Draft in a virtual format.

Teams with new head coaches were slated to start their offseason programming on Monday, but with facilities closed, the logistics still need to be sorted out. Per Pro Football Talk, the NFL and NFLPA have agreed to a “Pre-Phase One” as they continue to finalize the details of a virtual offseason.

“The NFLPA has been in discussions with the NFL over the possibility of establishing rules which would allow for clubs to conduct classroom instruction and workouts on a virtual basis, until it is determined that it is safe to open the facilities and begin in-person training at the facilities,” reads the memo that was sent to players Monday night.

The memo makes it clear all activity will be voluntary with strict rules in place regarding initiating contact with players.
