Baker Mayfield named PFWA’s Most Improved Player

Mayfield continues to be recognized for his efforts in Tampa Bay in 2023.

The Pro Football Writers of America have named Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield their Most Improved Player of the 2023 season, capping a career-defining comeback for the former first-overall draft pick.

After a disastrous 2022 season in which Mayfield bounced from the Panthers to the Rams, Mayfield joined the Bucs as a reclamation project on a bare-bones one-year contract. Mayfield rewarded the Bucs with career highs in yardage, completions and touchdowns as well as the NFC South division title and a playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mayfield is also a nominee for the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year. With postseason accolades falling Mayfield’s way, the Bucs have a big decision to make regarding his future in Tampa Bay.

4 LSU players earn All-SEC women’s basketball postseason awards

The Tigers were featured heavily in the league’s end-of-season honors.

LSU just capped off arguably the best regular season in program history for its women’s basketball team, so it should come as no surprise that Tigers players dominated the SEC’s list of postseason award winners.

The superstar is [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], the transfer from Maryland who has emerged as one of the top players in the entire country. She earned both First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive Team honors, while [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] joined her on the First Team.

After a dominant true freshman season, [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag] was named the league’s Freshman of the Year, while both she and [autotag]Sa’Myah Smith[/autotag] were both included among the SEC All-Freshman Team.

The Tigers sit at 27-1 (15-1 SEC) and will look to secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament at this week’s SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. They open their run against either Georgia or Auburn on Friday.

Here’s a rundown of each player.

Husker Linebacker named to Bednarik Watchlist

He would be only the second Husker to ever win the award!

The Bednarik Award is an annual postseason trophy presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year. The Maxwell Football Club has given the award away every year since its inception in 1995. It’s named for Chuck Bednarik, a linebacker who played for Penn from 1945-1948 and was the first overall pick of the 1949 NFL Draft of the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a 2x NFL Champion (1949, 1960), a 10x First-team All-Pro, and a member of the NFL’s 50th, 75th, and 100th Anniversary All-Time Teams.

Husker Linebacker Luke Reimer has been named to the Bednarik watchlist. Last season the Lincoln, Nebraska native had 90 total tackles, one sack, and one interception for the Cornhuskers. Should Reimer win the award, he would be the second Husker after 2009 winner Ndamukong Suh.

Ehlinger has thrown for 2,132 yards with 23 touchdowns and just five interceptions in his final season. According to a press release from the committee, the semifinalists for the award will be announced on December 7th.

A point scoring model was used to determine the quarterbacks in the Davey O’Brien Award’s Class of 2020. Points were awarded to players based on their overall performance as well as inclusion on the Davey O’Brien Preseason Watch List, weekly Great 8 lists and National Quarterback of the Week winners.

The Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee will select 16 semifinalists for the award, and announce them on Monday, Dec. 7.
