Where Michigan basketball ranks in latest AP Top 25

Where Juwan Howard’s squad comes in after his unranked team took down two top ten teams in consecutive games.

It now seems egregious that Michigan basketball has spent the entirety of the short 2019-20 season unranked to this point.

With a solid early season win over Creighton — also unranked, but a very good team — it looked like maybe new head coach Juwan Howard was onto something. Then, in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas, the Wolverines made a statement, with consecutive wins over Iowa State, No. 6 North Carolina and No. 8 Gonzaga.

After winning the tournament, and having arguably the two best wins of any team in college basketball yet this season, the expectation was that Michigan basketball wouldn’t just finally get ranked, but that it could be ranked as high as No. 1 overall this week. Analysts Jeff Goodman and Seth Davis both have the maize and blue as their top team after those wins.

But what would the AP voters think? Is Michigan the best team in the country at the moment?

Not according to the AP. But the Wolverines moved from unranked to No. 4 in the country.

The Wolverines have a daunting challenge up next, however, with No. 1 Louisville on the road coming up Tuesday night.

Michigan takes precipitous fall in Amway Coaches Poll

Lose big at home to your arch-rival, that’s what happens.

[jwplayer MfLEtgwV-XNcErKyb]

In the latest Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, Michigan got what it deserves.

Get blown out at home against an obvious playoff team? Your arch-rival? Yeah, you’re gonna fall and fall hard.

Michigan was No. 11 going up against No. 2 Ohio State, and while it exposed some flaws of the best-rated defense, it couldn’t stop the No. 1 scoring offense in the country.

Thus the Wolverines fell seven spots to No. 18.

Where Michigan landed in penultimate College Football Playoff regular season polls

Where the Wolverines rank in the penultimate regular season poll.

[jwplayer G7SX2Ira-XNcErKyb]

With a big win over Indiana, Michigan assured that it would have a big game against Ohio State to finish the 2019 regular season.

But how big will it be?

Entering last week’s contest, the Wolverines were ranked No. 13 in the College Football Playoff rankings. But with losses by No. 6 Oregon and No. 8 Penn State (to upcoming opponent, No. 2 Ohio State), some of the teams ahead of the maize and blue were destined to fall. On top of that, given the top ten win by OSU, could Michigan be facing the No. 1 team in the country come Saturday?

It turns out, Michigan remained ranked at No. 13, despite the aforementioned losses. However, the Wolverines will be hosting the No. 1 team, as the Buckeyes leaped LSU for the top spot.

Michigan moves up in latest Amway Coaches Poll.

The Wolverines moved up after destroying Indiana.

[jwplayer ptG62HdJ-XNcErKyb]

In the latest Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, Michigan expectedly saw some movement.

Last week, Michigan came in at No. 12, having moved up after the 44-10 drubbing of rival Michigan State. Not only did the Wolverines follow that up with a 39-14 shellacking of Indiana in Bloomington, but multiple top ten teams either lost or struggled, allowing the maize and blue to rise in the eyes of the coaches.

No. 9 Penn State lost to No. 2 Ohio State and No. 6 Oregon was surprised by unranked Arizona State. While Oklahoma got all it could handle from BYU, as did Georgia from Texas A&M, both still won. As a result, Michigan moved up from No. 12 to No. 11.

Up next, the Wolverines face No. 2 Ohio State.

After MSU domination, Michigan moves up in Amway Coaches Poll

Where the Wolverines, their recent and future opponents all rank in the eyes of the coaches with two games left.

[jwplayer ptG62HdJ-XNcErKyb]

In the latest Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, Michigan got a little respect put on its name, given the thorough beatdown of in-state rival MSU.

Last week, Michigan came in at No. 14, holding serve during the bye week. but after beating Sparty 44-10, the Wolverines moved up two spots, coming in on Sunday at No. 12 in the eyes of the coaches.

No longer will the maize and blue face a ranked Indiana team, however, as the Hoosiers dropped out of the poll after a narrow loss at Penn State. Though, Ohio State, naturally, looms large in two weeks, with the Buckeyes holding steady at No. 2.

Former opponents that are still ranked include No. 9 Penn State and No. 14 Wisconsin — both of which were losses for the Wolverines — as well as No. 15 Notre Dame and No. 20 Iowa — both wins for the maize and blue.
