Logan Paul spends $3.5 million on Pokémon Cards that could be fake

The YouTuber may have made a mistake.

YouTube personality Logan Paul bought several first edition Pokémon cards for $3.5 million, but experts don’t believe these cards are authentic.

On Dec. 20, 2021, Paul stated that he was the proud owner of several ludicrously rare booster boxes containing first edition Pokémon  trading cards. Given that the Pokémon Trading Card Game  came out back in the late 1990s, it was a bit hard to believe that Paul’s set was genuine.

Now Pokémon  trading card site PokéBeach, with help from YouTuber Rattle, is directly calling the card’s authenticity into question — with mountains of evidence to back up its claims.

The first sighting of these alleged booster boxes was on  eBay Canada  on Mar. 29, 2021. The seller had virtually no feedback, which made the overwhelming majority of hardcore collectors wary of shelling out money for the cards. Initially, the set sold for $$72,500 to — substantially lower than the $430,000 these booster packs typically go for. However, the initial buyer canceled the transaction after the seller refused any inspection of the boxes beforehand. Kind of a giant red flag, eh?

Another buyer  eventually bought the cards, claiming that the Baseball Card Exchange (BBCE) company verified that the cards were authentic. However, PokéBeach  and other enthusiasts claim that BBCE has minimal experience identifying Pokémon  cards. The company didn’t even clarify what its verification process entails!

Eventually, the buyer sold the cards to a sports card enthusiast for $2.7 million, who sold them to Paul for $3.5 million, which is (obviously) a pretty significant amount of cash to drop on items shrouded in secrecy and weird history.

Since PokéBeach’s  story went live on Dec. 31, 2021, Paul said Tuesday that he’s flying to Chicago to double-check with BBCE to see if the cards are real. Again, drawing skepticism from the Pokémon  trading card community, as it would make far more sense to have a company better suited to verifying Pokémon  cards.

Pokemon Go Tour will have a small number of in-person events in February

An in-person segment of Pokemon Go Tour: Johto has just been announced for Feb. 2022, although it’s only accessible in select regions.

Niantic has announced a small number of Pokemon Go Tour events that will be held in person early next year. The important word there is ‘small’ – while these events have been tentatively scheduled for Feb. 2022, they’re few and quite literally far between.

This comes in the wake of news that Pokemon Go Tour will be returning in 2022 in some capacity, with Feb. 26 being the target date for a worldwide event. After last year’s highly successful Pokemon Go Tour: Kanto venture, this celebration will be conducted in honor of Johto.

Since then, Niantic has also announced details of a second date for 2022’s Pokemon Go Tour. On Feb. 27, trainers will be able to participate in an in-person part of the event – the catch is that it’s only available in three cities.

The in-person leg of Pokemon Go Tour: Johto will be held on Feb. 27 in three locations – Parque Fundidora in Monterrey, Mexico; the Taiwan Lantern Festival in Kaohsiung, Taiwan; and Yas Bay in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Tickets for these in-person events are priced at $25 or the country’s local equivalent. Niantic has also published a blog post to give trainers an idea of what they can expect from Pokemon Go Tour: Johto’s live and very limited second outing.

Among other things, the Feb. 27 event will include real-world themed habitats, event-exclusive Special Research, up to nine free Raid Passes, real-life photo ops, and exclusive merch. Again, all of this is currently restricted to the three locations listed above. It’s unknown at present whether more cities will be added at a later date.

If you’re unable to attend the event and are feeling disappointed about being left out, it’s worth remembering that the December Community Day is this weekend. Lots of rare Pokemon will be available to catch over the course of Saturday, Dec. 18 and Sunday, Dec. 19, including Gible, Eevee, Oshawott, and more.

Outside of that, we also recently published some handy tier lists for the Great League and Ultra League, so be sure to check those out if you’re interested in Pokemon Go’s PvP component.

Pokémon speedrunner finishes Shining Pearl in under an hour

Yes, already!

A speedrunner finished Pokémon Shining Pearl  in just under an hour.

As first seen by Techraptor, a well-known speedrunner in  Pokémon  circles named  Werster  finished Shining Pearl  in an astonishing 50 minutes and 36 seconds. Yes, barely a week after the RPG came out and folks are already blitzing through it like nobody’s business.

“The remakes are so broken you can beat them in under an hour,” Werster said in the  YouTube video description. “Shoutouts to the speedrunning community around this game, the past week has been a blast and so many different people have contributed towards so much in this game in such a short space of time. It’s been fantastic.”

You can watch the complete Pokémon Shining Pearl  speedrun by Werster for yourself below. Don’t blink, though, or you’ll likely miss five or so tricks necessary to pull this run off.

What’s particularly impressive about this speedrun is that since the Shining Pearl  is so new, even faster times are bound to happen soon. The community will undoubtedly find heaps more skips and tricks in the days, weeks and years to come.

If you’re more of a Pokémon GO  person, we’ve got a bunch of raid guides to help out on your mission to be the very best. Such as how to counter ZapdosArticunoMoltresRegiceRegirock and Registeel during raids.

Halloween event for ‘Pokemon GO’ introduces large, spooky Pokemon

Halloween Mischief is back!

We’re well into the fall season now, and you know what that means: Pokemon GO’s  Halloween Mischief event is almost back. Not the first thing that comes to mind this time of year, eh? How dare you. Pikachu has a cute little purple hat for the occasion and everything.

Well, for those of you not in the know, Halloween Mischief is an annual two-part event in Pokemon GO  that begins on Oct. 15 and runs until the end of the month. Creepy Companions, the first part, runs until Oct. 22 and introduces a brand new Pokemon to the game: Galarian Slowking.

Then also on Oct. 22, the second part of Halloween Mischief, called Ghoulish Pals, will begin. It will introduce a new size-altering mechanic and a new Pokemon type called Pumpkaboo. The bigger the Pumpkaboo is, the more likely it is to evolve into a big Gourgeist. So really, you’re getting two new Pokemon species in Ghoulish Pals!

Of course, with every holiday-themed event in Pokemon GO, there’ll be new avatar items available via the in-game shop.

The cosmetics for Halloween Mischief are:

  • Pumpkaboo Top
  • Pikachu Pumpkin Head
  • Hoopa Headband
  • Pumpkaboo Pants
  • Halloween Face Sticker

That Pikachu Pumpkin Head item straddles the line between adorable and terrifying, doesn’t it?

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ new trailer shows it’s the Pokémon game we’ve always dreamed of

Wow this game looks amazing.

Listen. Pokémon is Pokémon. And there haven’t been many bad Pokémon games throughout its history. Some are just better than others, but most of them play pretty well and give you some sense of a challenge.

While they’ve all been great, though, they all haven’t quite filled the heart up of every wannabe Pokémon master out there.

For the folks out there who play Pokémon, y’all know what I mean. We want every one of these games to feature every single thing.

There’s a long list. We want to be able to catch Pokémon from every generation. We want to be able to travel from every single region in the series that has ever existed. We want access to every legendary Pokémon. Some folks (read: ME) have even stranger requests like wanting to be actual gym leaders.

But one thing we’ve all universally dreamed about is having an experience on the game that mimics the show a bit more.

We want to really see Pokémon out in the wild and just throw Pokéballs at them if we want to capture them. We want to ride on the back of our Pidgeot as it flys throughout the region. We want that full experience.

And it’s pretty clear that a lot of that and more is the vision here or Pokémon Legends: Arceus after seeing the brand new trailer.

The Zelda: Breath of the Wild comparisons seem apt here. This is a full RPG Pokémon experience. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen the franchise put together before.

It feels realistic. You’re sneaking around through grass trying to capture Pokémon. The ones you fail to capture might actually attack you while you’re off guard. You can also have your Pokémon companions defend you and actually watch them battle.

This game feels like what happens if you fuse the main games from the franchise with Pokémon Stadium and then fuse that again with Zelda. It looks spectacular.

This is what we’ve always dreamed of in a Pokémon game. This game is going to be so fun. January can’t get here quickly enough.
