BREAKING: Alabama guard Jaden Bradley enters transfer portal

Alabama point guard Jaden Bradley is set to enter the transfer portal. He was a part-time starter for the Crimson Tide this past season.

Alabama point guard Jaden Bradley will be entering the transfer portal. Verbal Commits was the first to report the news on Twitter.

Bradley was a McDonald’s All-American coming out of high school. The New York native joined a Alabama recruiting class that finished ranked No. 3.

In his lone season with the Tide, Bradley averaged 6.4 points per game, 2.6 rebounds per game, and 3.1 assists per game. He started in 22 games for the Tide this past season. His most productive game came against Auburn in Alabama’s regular season finale. Bradley had six points, five rebounds, and four assists.

He flashed the ability to drive by defenders and make timely layups. Bradley was also a key piece to Alabama’s backcourt. One thing that Bradley struggled with this season was shooting from deep. He shot just 31.8% from the three-point line.

Bradley can explore his options and transfer in due time. However, he could elect to return to Alabama as well. Both options are on the table.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama basketball program and its involvement in the transfer portal.

2023 PG, Alabama signee R.J. Johnson requests release from National Letter of Intent

2023 three-star point guard R.J. Johnson requested a release from his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday night. Johnson signed with the Tide in November.

In what came as a surprise to many, 2023 Alabama basketball signee R.J. Johnson requested to be released from his National Letter of Intent on Tuesday. The news was first reported by On3’s Joe Tipton.

Johnson released a statement to Tipton that read, “After much prayer and counsel, it was not an easy decision but I asked for my release from my NLI from the University of Alabama. I want to thank Coach Oats and staff for granting me the special opportunity. I just feel right now it’s best for me to pursue other opportunities elsewhere.”

Johnson committed to the Crimson Tide back in August and eventually signed in November. He chose Alabama over other programs like Wichita State, Georgia, Florida Atlantic, and LSU.

The native of Huntsville, Alabama was the highest-ranked player in the state out of the 2023 recruiting class. He averaged 21 points per game, 8.1 rebounds per game, and 3.1 assists per game for Grissom High School.

Alabama could be on the forefront of potentially landing a transfer or receiving good news regarding a player returning. It just makes sense given the fact that Nimari Burnett entered the transfer portal and Johnson has re-opened his recruitment.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama basketball program as the offseason gets underway.

Alabama listed as a finalist to land in-state, 2024 PG Labaron Philon

2024 point guard Labaron Philon dropped his top six schools. Alabama is in the mix, but will the Tide land his commitment?

Alabama was one of the first schools to offer 2024, in-state point guard Labaron Philon, who recently released his top-six programs. Alabama made the cut as a finalist.

The Tide’s top competition is likely Auburn. As of right now, Auburn is projected to land Philon at 77.3% likelihood, according to On3’s RPM. However, Alabama could emerge as the favorite with the way the current team is playing. The program has a history of landing some of the state’s top prospects.

He has taken one unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa. It will be interesting to see if he decides to make a return visit before announcing his commitment.

Roll Tide Wire breaks down Labaron Philon’s recruiting profile.

Alabama guard Jahvon Quinerly returns to action for first time since tearing ACL

After suffering a torn ACL during March Madness, Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly returned to action for the first time in a little over seven months.

It was somewhat of a surprise to see Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly on the floor of Tuesday night’s game against South Alabama. The expectation was that he would return by conference play in a few weeks. The New Jersey native suffered a torn ACL in the Tide’s first-round matchup in the NCAA Tournament against Notre Dame.

It has been just over seven months since Quinerly’s injury. However, it doesn’t appear to be slowing him down. “It means the world man… it’s a really good feeling. These guys, they’re my family. Good feeling,” he said following the win against South Alabama.

Quinerly played four minutes on Tuesday night and was able to grab one rebound. He also mentioned after the game that this year’s team has the potential to be something special. “Our length this year is very much like our Sweet 16 team. Long guys all over the court. I think this group is willing to learn a little bit better than last year’s group. Guys just willing to take the constructive criticism from a coach or teammate,” he added.

If that is any indication of what the Tide can achieve this season, this could be a very special one to say the least. Nate Oats’ squad has already presented challenges on the defensive end of the floor this season and has showcased the potential to put up a lot of points.

The addition of Quinerly should bode well for the Tide as they enter a tough non-conference stretch starting soon.

Celtics’ Marcus Smart ranked just 18th-best point guard in new CBS Sports assessment

If he was so critical in Boston’s Finals run and was the league’s top defender, we’re confused as to why inferior defenders who are also not as good of a floor general are ranked higher.

As this year’s mid-September content desert remedy that is ranking season continues ahead of the Boston Celtics2022-23 campaign, the folks over at CBS Sports have passed judgment on the Celtics’ starting point guard in this year’s assessment of the NBA’s floor generals.

That of course is veteran guard Marcus Smart, who checks in at No. 18 for CBS — a bit low in our estimation. With a nod to the Flower Mound native’s Defensive Player of the Year season in 2021-22, CBS’ Jack Maloney says it is Smart’s point guard skills that were “just as important in the Celtics’ run to the Finals.”

“He averaged a career-high 5.9 assists, refined his shot selection, and had the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio (2.8) in the league among point guards,” adds the CBS analyst.

If he was so critical in Boston’s Finals run and was the league’s top defender, we’re confused as to why inferior defenders who are also not as good of a floor general like CJ McCollum, Cade Cunningham, and LaMelo Ball are ranked higher.

All great players, but sans the resume or team success of Boston’s loved and trusted lead guard. If nothing else, a little bulletin board material for Smart, we suppose.

Collin Sexton lands massive contract from Utah Jazz

Collin Sexton just got PAID, here are the details.

In part of a league-altering move that resulted in Donovan Mitchell being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, former Crimson Tide superstar, [autotag]Collin Sexton[/autotag], found himself as part of the trade package for Mitchell and is headed west to join the Utah Jazz.

Immediately after the trade, Sexton signed a massive deal with the Jazz for four years worth $71 million. As shown below, Sexton’s contract will start at $16.5 million and it increases 5% each year.

Sexton, unfortunately, missed a majority of the 2021-2022 NBA season due to a torn meniscus suffered in November. In the 11 games he appeared in prior to the injury, Sexton was averaging 16.0 ppg, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists.

However, Sexton has been incredibly promising as he was named to the NBA All-Rookie second team in 2019 and has only gotten better from that point. Through four seasons, Sexton’s career averages are 20 ppg, 3.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and just shy of one steal.

The trade to Utah should result in Sexton getting a lot more looks as the Jazz’s new No. 1 option. It will be fun to see if Sexton can make his first All-Star game appearance this upcoming season.

Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly still on track to return for SEC play

Alabama PG Jahvon Quinerly is reportedly on pace to return by SEC play for the Crimson Tide.

On Tuesday, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported that Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly isn’t practicing yet. However, he did report that head coach Nate Oats said, “(Jahvon Quinerly) is still on track to return for the SEC schedule and maybe a little sooner.”

Quinerly originally began his college career at Villanova. However, he transferred to Alabama after his freshman season. Since he arrived in Tuscaloosa, he has started in 34 games. Quinerly has averaged 13.4 points per game and shot 44.5% from the field.

Last season, he averaged a career-high with 13.8 points per game while making 27 starts. His season came to an end in Alabama’s round-one matchup against Notre Dame. He sustained a torn Achilles tendon that ended his redshirt-sophomore season.

Now, he is planning to return to action by the start of conference play. The Crimson Tide is coming off of an NCAA Tournament appearance. There are high hopes for the basketball program this season. Quinerly will certainly be a huge addition to the rotation when he returns to action.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor Jahvon Quinerly’s injury and provide the latest as it is reported.

Alabama basketball lands commitment from 2023 PG R.J. Johnson

Alabama lands second commitment for 2023 class from in-state point guard R.J. Johnson.

Alabama head coach [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] has made it a priority to build a foundation through recruiting. He has already brought in four classes ranked inside the top 25. On Friday, 2023 point guard R.J. Johnson announced his commitment to Alabama via his Twitter page.

He chose the Crimson Tide over Wichita State, Tulane and Georgia. He is the second commitment of the 2023 recruiting class. The other is four-star small forward Sam Walters.

Johnson is regarded as the No. 1 recruit in the state of Alabama, according to 247Sports’ rankings. The native of Huntsville attends Grissom High School. Interestingly enough, he received an official offer from Alabama just a week ago. It didn’t take long for the talented, in-state guard to elect to stay home.

When speaking with On3’s Joe Tipton, here is what Johnson’s message was to the Alabama faithful:

“Me and Sam (Walters) about to put on a show.”

That should indicate that Johnson and his teammate are already ready to put in the work necessary to take the Alabama basketball program to the next level.

2023 prospect RJ Johnson lands offer from Alabama, pushing commitment date back to September

2023 point guard R.J. Johnson recently received an offer from Alabama. He will likely announce his commitment decision in September.

Alabama extended an offer to 2023 point guard R.J. Johnson on Thursday. The native of Huntsville, Alabama was originally scheduled to commit on August 22. However, he and his family have since pushed his commitment date back to September. When asked by Crimson Crossover’s Matt Landry, here is what Johnson had to say about a commitment date:

“My family and I have decided to wait until after Labor Day.”

It certainly makes things interesting considering that he previously released a top five, according to Trent Markwith of Relentless Hoops. The teams that were reportedly in the mix were Tulane, Alabama, Georgia, Wichita State, and Florida Atlantic.

Since then, Alabama extended Johnson an official offer. It appears like it is a two-team race between the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide. Johnson is a prospect to keep a close eye on.

Roll Tide Wire breaks down Johnson’s recruiting profile below.
