Bell Ringer Podcast: Rockets GM Daryl Morey says NBA will return

The Bell Ringer Podcast debates the comments made by Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey about the season returning.

Sixers Wire and the USA Today Sports Media Group is proud to present The Bell Ringer Podcast hosted by Sixers Wire editor Ky Carlin and Cameron Fields as they talk all things basketball. Not only with the Philadelphia 76ers, but in the entire NBA as a whole.

Monday’s episode focuses on hope for when the NBA can return from its current suspension. Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey recently said that the NBA will definitely return no matter what, but when and how? Also, the Sixers would currently open up as the 6 seed in the East against the Boston Celtics, can they get to the Finals? Ky also has a few Jimmy Butler media availability stories.

We discuss all of that as well as what we’re doing in quarantine right now in terms of playing video games as well as what we’re watching–hint, it’s Tiger King.

As always leave your thoughts with us on Twitter and we thank you for listening. We will continue to add new episodes whenever we can and when basketball does eventually return, we will ramp up our efforts to bring you basketball content. [lawrence-related id=28555,28548,28531]

Watch: Lions Wire and Detroit Lions Podcast break down free agent moves, Darius Slay

Watch: Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon joins the Detroit Lions Podcast to break down the Lions free agent moves, Darius Slay’s departure and more

Want a more in-depth discussion of the early free agency moves by the Detroit Lions? Looking for some nuanced, informed talk on what happened with Darius Slay? We’ve got just the thing.

Lions Wire editor Jeff Risdon joined the Detroit Lions Podcast to talk about all the Lions comings and goings in the first days of free agency. It’s not all positive but it’s also not the doom and gloom many are making it out to be. There is also a long discussion on what happened with Darius Slay and Matt Patricia upon the Pro Bowl CB’s departure to Philadelphia.

There is also talk about how free agency impacts the draft and how the moves are revealing a change in the defensive philosophy with new coordinator Cory Undlin.

You can listen or stream it from here, or watch on the YouTube channel below. There is a small bit of NSFW language, as a warning.

Once again, ‘Binge Mode’ is your Ultimate Podcast Bracket champion

For a second straight year, “Binge Mode” wins the Ultimate Podcast Bracket.

It’s a back-to-back win for “Binge Mode.”

The Ringer podcast, which dives deeply into popular TV and movie series, ran the table again, beating The Pat McAfee Show in a final that saw over 100,000 votes cast.

“Binge Mode” also won the bracket last year, which makes the selection committee’s decision to give them a 3-seed even more flabbergasting. When asked about it, the committee chairman, who is me, could only offer up again the explanation that he forgot about “Binge Mode” when first making the bracket and then was too lazy to go back and change the first two seeds in the Culture/Comedy region.

It was an oversight, but one that fueled “Binge Mode” to give a nobody-believes-in-us performance for the ages and take their second consecutive win in the annual contest.

The hosts did their part to rally their fans:

Congratulations to “Binge Mode.”

Ultimate Podcast Bracket 2020: Vote in the championship

Vote in the championship of our podcast bracket, which pits No. 3 Pat McAfee Show against No. 3 Binge Mode.

And then there were two.

We have reached the championship of the 2020 Ultimate Podcast Bracket, our very serious, not at all made-up-on-the-fly bracket thing we put together.

The final two competitors are both 3-seeds: Defending champions Binge Mode and upstarts The Pat McAfee Show.

Binge Mode entered the tournament with a huge chip on its shoulder after being given a 3-seed despite coming off a title last year. When the committee explained that they got a 3-seed because the committee forgot about them for a second, and then was too lazy to go back and change the 1- and 2-seeds, it only grew their frustration. They’ve rode that energy to another title game.

The Pat McAfee Show may have had a slightly easier road to the final in terms of seeds faced, but they needed a herculean effort to take down 8-seed Shutdown Fullcast. The total amount of votes in that one contest surpassed the votes cast in entire regions for other rounds.

So here we are: The final. VOTE NOW. Polls will close at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

The Ultimate Podcast Bracket: Vote in the Final Four

We’re down to just four podcasts remaining. Vote for your favorite!

We’ve reached the Final Four of the 2020 Ultimate Podcast Bracket, brought to you by nothing. No sponsors. We just made this thing up.

In the Sweet 16, our two Cinderella stories finally came to a tragic end, as No. 8 Hardcore History fell to defending champions Binge Mode, and No. 8 Shutdown Fullcast crashed out to The Pat McAfee Show.

The Fullcast is already starting a counter-narrative campaign a la UCF, proclaiming that they are the rightful champions. Considering how stupid this all is, sure.

Now, there are only four podcasts left. All four 1-seeds have fallen, but every pod remaining is formidable. Let’s get to the matchups.

VOTE! You have until Friday at 10 a.m. ET to log your vote.

Ultimate Podcast Bracket: Vote in the Elite 8!

Vote now in the Elite 8 of our Ultimate Podcast Bracket.

We’re on to the Elite 8.

After two spirited rounds of voting in our made-up imaginary podcast bracket, we have just eight pods remaining.

We had even more fun upsets in the Sweet 16, with No. 4 My Favorite Murder knocking off juggernaut No. 1 Crime Junkie. We also had two more Cinderella stories keep their runs going, with two 8-seeds, Shutdown Fullcast and Hardcore History, keeping the magic alive.

Of the eight remaining, analysts are still tabbing defending champions Binge Mode as the odds-on favorite, but they might run into trouble in the scrappy 8-seed of Hardcore History.

As always, voting will be open until 10 a.m. ET tomorrow. VOTE NOW!

Ultimate Podcast Bracket 2020: Vote in the Sweet 16

We’re onto the second round of our annual Ultimate Podcast Bracket. Vote for your favorite podcasts!

The first round of Ultimate Podcast Bracket voting is in the books and hoo buddy did we have a round.

First: The favorites. In “looking like contenders” news, defending champions Binge Mode went and scoffed at the committee’s 3-seed, romping over the Ron Burgundy Podcast with 80 percent of the vote. Last year’s runner-up Crime Junkie also won easily over in the True Crime region, and looks set to make another deep run.

But enough of that. Let’s talk upsets. We had TWO 8-seeds upset 1-seeds this year, a thrilling development for the many rampant fans of our imaginary, meaningless podcast bracket. The first was Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History, which I recommend as a lovely podcast to learn some stuff and then fall asleep to, which hung on to beat This American Life. The history nerds went and beat up the people who wear cool glasses and tell interesting stories at cocktail parties, and it was a sight to behold.

The other major upset came in the Sports Region, where upstarts Shutdown Fullcast defeated No. 1 seed Bill Simmons Podcast. The fact that the Fullcast was able to do this without working microphones, production of any kind, or any semblance of week-to-week coherence, well, it only speaks to their scrappiness and verve.

On to the Sweet 16! Vote! Once again, voting will remain open until 10 a.m. ET tomorrow.

Ultimate Podcast Bracket 2020: Vote for your favorite podcast

We have 32 podcasts squaring off in a March Madness-style bracket. Vote for your favorites!

The FTW Ultimate Podcast Bracket is back for its second annual iteration. It’s time for some Pod Wars.

Last year, Binge Mode made a major run from the 4-seed, upsetting big names on the way to a title win over Crime Junkie in the final. We’ve rewarded Binge Mode’s excellence last year by bumping them up one spot, to binge ma 3-seed. Why? We like when they’ve got something to prove. Also we forgot them when doing the first two seeds, and I was too lazy to go back and change it.

When it comes to seeding, we’ve used the scientific “glancing at the Apple Podcast charts and then also just putting in stuff we like” method. If we left off your podcast, don’t be too offended. I left off my own podcast. See? I hate myself as much as I hate you.

The polls will close at 10 a.m. ET the following day, and new matchups will be posted at 10:30-ish. If I’m late, just chill. Give me some time. Updating these Illustrator files can be a bear, and it’s a whole thing, and this is a made-up podcast bracket.

OK! Now vote!

Binge the entire first season of our true crime podcast, ‘The Sneak’

The Sneak is FTW’s serialized, true crime podcast that tells the story of a once-great football star who robbed an armored truck.

This winter, For The Win tried something new. We, along with partners USA TODAY and Wondery Media, released our first narrative podcast.

It’s a podcast at the intersection of sports and true crime, and tells the story of Anthony Curcio, a once-great football star who fell on hard times and then pulled off an audacious robbery — stealing $400,000 from an armored truck and then escaping in an inner tube down a river.

As we found with new reporting, however, the story that had been told about the crime? It wasn’t the full story. Not even close. What started out as a true crime story soon became a story about a small town, and that town’s secrets. Secrets about the crime, and the people who got away with it.

The entire first season is now out, ready for binging. Each episode is between 15 and 20 minutes long, so you can move pretty quickly through it, and we think you’ll like it. We’d love if you gave it a shot.
