Needed offensive and defensive stats for Cardinals in 2024; team captain reactions

Jess Root and Seth Cox talk about the Cardinals’ new captains and go over stats certain players need to hit in 2024 for success.

It is officially Week 1 for the Arizona Cardinals and they are preparing for the Buffalo Bills. At the start of the week, they named their team captains. Seth Cox and I discussed in the latest episode of the podcast how this year’s captains were chosen differently.

Last year, head coach Jonathan Gannon selected six captains. This time, players voted and four were selected — quarterback Kyler Murray, running back James Conner, linebacker Kyzir White and safety Budda Baker.

They were captains last year as well, in addition to D.J. Humphries, who is no longer on the team, and linebacker Dennis Gardeck.

We discussed how the Cardinals will also have game captains chosen each week as well.

After that, we talked about offensive and defensive numbers we hope to see individuals have in 2024. We think Kyler Murray needs 4,500 combined passing and rushing yards and 35 combined touchdowns, while I believe he needs to specifically hit the 4,000-yard passing mark.

With the absence of BJ Ojulari, we talked about how many sacks different players need.

Listen to all that and more in this new edition of the show.

The Arizona Cardinals made the moves they needed to make to get the roster down to 53 players. They cut many, placed others on injured reserve and even made a player trade. Many moves were expected. Some were surprising.

In a new episode of the podcast, Seth Cox and I go through every position on the roster, discuss who was cut, who stayed, what moves were perhaps surprising and why, and they discuss potential additions and whether players will likely return to the practice squad.

Cardinals preseason stock up, stock down; potential surprise cuts

Jess Root and Seth Cox have a lot to talk about in the lates edition of the podcast.

The Arizona Cardinals are less than a week away from when they have to cut their roster down to 53 players. They played their second preseason game, losing to the Indianapolis Colts.

With a lot to talk about, Seth Cox and I had plenty of topics to discuss in the latest edition of the podcast.

We started reacting to the good and the bad of the game, noting how quarterback Desmond Ridder’s play might have cost him a spot on the roster. In terms of positives, there was a lot to like with the play of linebacker Cameron Thomas, guard Isaiah Adams, safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson and running back Trey Benson.

The bad? That was tackle Christian Jones.

We also talk about what we think of the Cardinals’ strategy of keeping all their starters out of preseason games.

Lastly, we go over a few names that could be surprise cuts for the Cardinals or potential trade pieces.

WATCH: Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel interview Broncos coach Sean Payton

Chase Daniel and Dianna Russini recently spoke with Broncos coach Sean Payton on their ‘Scoop City’ podcast. Watch the full interview here.

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton spoke with The Athletic‘s Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel last week for a new episode of their “Scoop City” podcast.

Daniel is a former NFL quarterback who was a backup with the New Orleans Saints from 2009-2012 and in 2017, so he has an existing relationship with Payton. Thanks to that relationship, Daniel is granted access that isn’t typically given to members of the media.

Daniel sat in on a team meeting last Thursday before the team’s joint practice with the Green Bay Packers and he also sat in on a quarterback meeting. One of Daniel’s takeaways from those meetings is that quarterbacks coach Davis Webb will become an NFL head coach in the future.

You can watch the full podcast episode below, with the Payton interview beginning at the 17:10 mark:

A few notes:

  • Payton told a story he has told many times about how he liked that quarterback Bo Nix only had football items in his backpack at his pro day. Nix threw 82 passes at his pro day and 81 were “exactly on the right [correct] shoulder.” After watching 16 throws, Payton told general manager George Paton, “This is the guy.” Payton likes Nix’s ability to play in a “dirty pocket” and make off-schedule throws. Philip Rivers worked with Nix this spring and gave him a positive review to Payton.
  • Payton had Paton call the New York Jets when they were on the clock with pick No. 11 to stall and find out if anyone was attempting to trade up above Denver for Nix. Paton also called the Las Vegas Raiders at pick No. 13 to ask if they wanted to move up to gauge if they were targeting a quarterback.
  • Payton spoke highly about third-string QB Zach Wilson and told him, “My job is to make you millions, either with us or another team.”
  • Two weeks ago, Payton had the team’s three QBs give him their favorite plays from previous stops and they put them in the offense. He’s keeping tack of which play performs the best. Payton’s offense is evolving over time and he’s not locked into his 2006 playbook.
  • Payton is excited about the additions of defensive linemen John Franklin-Myers and Malcolm Roach and he’s pleased with how defensive line is playing this summer. Payton described the Broncos as “young and hungry.” He said the two great allies of a young quarterback are a good defense and strong running game, and he believes Denver will have both in 2024.
  • Payton told the story of how he got a Michael Jordan shoe sponsorship from the former NBA star.

Payton is entering his second year with the Broncos after going 8-9 last fall. His all-time head coach record is 160-98. He won seven division titles and one Super Bowl with the Saints before landing in Denver last year.

After a full week of training camp for the Arizona Cardinals, Seth Cox and I get together for a new edition of the podcast, reacting to what we have seen and heard in the first week.

What did we discuss?

We talk about the overall health of the team and how they had no injuries of all until Tuesday, when center Hjalte Froholdt suffered what appears to be a minor knee injury.
