10-year-old shot at HS football game in New Jersey dies

Micah Tennant, the 10-year-old wounded at a New Jersey High School football game Friday, has died.

The game started at Pleasantville and was interrupted in a horrific manner when shots were fired in the bleachers, causing panic.

Two other people, including a 15-year-old boy, were also wounded. The gunman was aiming for Ibn Abdullah, 27, who was the third person shot, police have said.

NJ.com reported Alvin Wyatt will now be charged with murder in addition to facing multiple other counts. Six people in all have been arrested in connection with the shooting, which drew national attention.

New Jersey politicians were quick to weigh in after Tennant’s death was announced.

Gov. Phil Murphy released a statement offering condolences to the Tennant family.

“No child deserves to have their promising life cut short, especially by indiscriminate and senseless gun violence,” Murphy said. “No parent deserves to bury their child. We will hold Dew’s memory close, and we will remember his name, as we continue our work to make New Jersey safer for all of our families.”

“This does not need to be our reality,” Rep. Jeff Van Drew, D-2nd Dist., said in a statement. “There are bipartisan legislative solutions that we can enact right now that will decrease the likelihood that another family has to suffer this profound tragedy.”

In Philadelphia during the day, Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz greeted players from the Camden HS team before play was resumed. Before the teams restarted the game a moment of silence was held for Tennant.

Camden was leading when the game was suspended and went on to a 22-0 victory.

After a shooting in the bleachers interrupted the Camden-Pleasantville football game, the matchup will finish at Lincoln Financial Field on Wednesday.

The Camden-Pleasantville high school football game, which was halted because of a shooting in the stands in the third quarter last Friday night, will be concluded at Lincoln Financial Field on Wednesday at 4 p.m., per a release from the NJSIAA.

The Central Jersey Group 2 semifinal was suspended with about 17 minutes remaining in the game.

“The NJSIAA would like to thank many of our member schools that offered their assistance, including the Black Horse Pike School District for its willingness to step in to host this game on such short notice and under difficult and unusual circumstances,” NJSIAA executive director Larry White said in a statement.

“It’s extremely unfortunate that a senselessly violent act has impacted this game, and there will certainly be a wide range of emotions along both sidelines. However, thanks to the Eagles’ generosity and community spirit, Pleasantville and Camden student-athletes and their families will have an opportunity to write their own ending to this game. They’ll compete on a world-class stage, sending a clear message that violence will not win.”

Three fans were injured in the shooting, including a 10-year-old boy who was left in critical condition and died Wednesday. Six were charged in connection with the incident, including Alvin Wyatt, 31, who was charged with three counts of attempted murder.

Each high school will be provided a defined number of passes to the game, which are specifically for players’ parents and family members.

The game will be closed to the general public.

The sectional final will be played on Nov. 30 at the home field of the highest seed remaining. No. 2 Cedar Creek made the title game with a 50-10 victory over Bernards on Saturday.

In a move that’s certain to bring some joy to everyone in the South Jersey community, the Philadelphia Eagles have offered and will host the N.J. high school playoff game between Pleasantville & Camden that was suspended because of a shooting last week.

The game will now be played on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field.

The game was originally played on Friday night and stopped with Camden holding a 6-0 lead with 4:58 left in the third quarter when gunfire originated from the Pleasantville bleachers.

Each school will be provided passes for players’ parents and family members; the game will be closed to the general public.

The Philadelphia Eagles will play host to the end of the NJ HS playoff game suspended Friday due to a shooting that wounded three people.

The Philadelphia Eagles stepped up big time Monday, offering to play host to the suspended playoff game between Camden and Pleasantville high schools. The New Jersey playoff game was suspended Friday when a tragic shooting occurred in the Pleasantville bleachers in the third quarter.

“Following NJSIAA’s statement on Saturday related to the completion of the game on Wednesday, November 20, at a neutral site, we can now announce that the Philadelphia Eagles have offered to host the suspended Pleasantville H.S. / Camden H.S. football playoff game,” NJSIAA executive director Larry White said in a statement.

It is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m ET.

The game was stopped with 4:58 left in the third quarter Friday when gunfire erupted in the Pleasantville bleachers. Camden held a 6-0 lead at the time. Pleasantville (8-1) came into the game riding a seven-game winning streak. Camden (7-2) has won four of its last five games.

Six men were charged in connection with the shooting at Pleasantville High School that left three people wounded. A wounded man, Ibn Abdullah, 27, was the target of the shooting and was charged because a gun was found on him when emergency responders went to his aid. He is in stable condition and will be undergoing surgery.

NJ.com reports one of the Pleasantville players will honor the 10-year-old who was wounded and faces surgery.

Ernest Howard, a senior running back/linebacker will wear the No. 10 jersey. He had worn No. 2 all season.

“I just wanted to honor him,” Howard said Sunday. “I thought about it and felt it was a nice gesture. We’re still planning on something else, but that will work out until the time comes for the next gesture.

“I don’t know him, but he doesn’t have the opportunity that we have (to play).”

New Jersey church serves as start of healing process for students impacted by shooting at high school football game

A Camden church held a special service for those who were impacted by Friday night’s shooting at the Camden-Pleasantville high school football playoff game.

When gunfire erupted in the closing moments of Friday night’s football game between Camden (N.J.) High School and Pleasantville (N.J.) High School, three were injured (one critically), six were eventually charged, and two communities were left stunned. On Sunday, one church moved forward to serve as a cathartic healing point for all, hoping to pave the way back to a sense of confidence and normalcy.

As reported by NJ.com, The First Nazarene Baptist Church in Camden held a special service on Sunday for anyone affected by the Friday night shooting. The service drew members from both sidelines and stands of Friday’s game, including school board members and coaches from Camden.

Pastor Dyheim T. Watson Sr. allegedly led the congregation in prayers for administrators, students and coaches for those at the game Friday.

“God, we plead your blood over our athletes … over our administrators,” Watson Sr. told NJ.com.

The Camden-Pleasantville football game was rescheduled in the aftermath of the shooting. Camden led 6-0 when the game was abandoned because of the shooting, though it remains to be seen when the contest will return to the field. For now, Camden is scheduled to take on Cedar Creek in a third-round playoff game Friday.

Report: Multiple people shot in bleachers at New Jersey high school football game

Multiple people were reportedly wounded in a shooting in the bleachers at the Pleasantville vs. Camden high school football game in New Jersey.

Gunfire erupted at a New Jersey high school football game Friday night, resulting in multiple wounds to people in the stands.

In the third quarter of the Pleasantville vs. Camden High School (New Jersey), about six shots went off in the bleachers, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

Reports from different outlets including Press of Atlantic City and ABC6 stated “at least two” people were wounded. Mike Frankel of Jersey Sports Zone tweeted three people were shot, and all the victims were in the front few rows of the bleachers.

Frankel also tweeted that one of the victims was a young boy appearing to be 10 to 14 years old.

Another victim was a female, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

No players were injured in the shooting.

Camden had been leading 6-0 with about five minutes left in the third quarter when the shooting occurred, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

Fans and players from both teams ran from the field, according to the Inquirer.
