Behind Carolina Chacarra’s spring-opening title at the UCF Challenge on Feb. 8 is an impressive bit of symmetry. The Wake Forest freshman’s closing round of 10-under 62 at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, matched older brother Eugenio Chacarra’s course-record 62 at Hapuna Golf Course in Kamuela, Hawaii, at the Amer Ari Invitational, which he also won three days earlier.

Carolina Chacarra’s closing 62 capped a 19-under 54-hole total that was good for her first college title and the 54-hole program scoring record in relation to par.

Chacarra’s final round was split between two days after tournament organizers lengthened Day 2 of the event to get ahead of approaching storms. She had six holes left on the final day, birdied three of them and ended up with the second-lowest 18-hole score in NCAA history.

In the fall, Chacarra, who is ranked No. 80 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, made four starts with Wake Forest. Her best finish was a T-5 at the Bryan National Collegiate.

College Performers of the Week powered by Rapsodo: Fred Biondi, Florida

Fred Biondi became the latest Florida player to claim the individual title at the Gators Invitaitonal.

Add Fred Biondi’s name to a long list of Gators to win at Mark Bostick Golf Course, Florida’s tricky home track in Gainesville. Biondi, a redshirt junior, claimed the Vystar Gators Invitational individual title on Feb. 13, becoming the 16th player in program history to do so. Biondi birdied his final hole and held off teammate Ricky Castillo by four shots.

Biondi put together rounds of 63-66-67 for a 14-under 196 total.

In the fall, Biondi competed just one time with the team, finishing T13 at the Isleworth Intercollegiate. He played the Sea Best Invitational, Florida’s spring opener, earlier this month and finished T-27. His opening 63 at the Gator was a career best.

Last month, Biondi represented his native Brazil at the Latin America Amateur, where a Masters spot was up for grabs for the winner. Biondi finished tied for second, one shot behind winner Aaron Jarvis.

“I’ve been playing really well lately,” Biondi said in a school release. “A couple good finishes not as good as I wanted last college event but they pretty good at Latin Am now, three weeks ago, and it’s been playing really solid and kind of everything came up together and was good to three together.”

College Performers of the Week powered by Rapsodo: Kaleigh Telfer, Auburn

The Auburn senior has been named one of the College Performers of the Week powered by Rapsodo.

Auburn senior Kaleigh Telfer picked up the third individual title of her career on Jan. 30 by starting the spring season with a victory at the Lady Bulldog Invitational, an individuals-only event at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Georgia.

Telfer’s bogey-free 67 in the opening round gave her an immediate leg up. After a second-round 74, she won by two shots with her 3-under total.

Telfer didn’t compete with Auburn in the fall but competed in LPGA Q-School, advancing to the second stage. She last won a college tournament at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in 2020.

“I loved getting back out on the golf course wearing the AU logo again after a couple months,” Telfer said. “I have been playing well at home, so it was really nice to see my game translate to a tournament.”

College Performers of the Week powered by Rapsodo: Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra, Oklahoma State

The Oklahoma State senior has been named one of the College Performers of the Week powered by Rapsodo.

[mm-video type=video id=01fvf8tzvt4n058hqpp8 playlist_id=01es6rjnsp3c84zkm6 player_id=01evcfxp4q8949fs1e image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fvf8tzvt4n058hqpp8/01fvf8tzvt4n058hqpp8-06d926c289c849cf2cd0c817c04eb735.jpg]

Oklahoma State lapped the field on the final day of the Amer Ari Invitational, going 24-under par to lock up the team title at 50 under total. The man responsible for most of those red strokes? Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra, the individual medalist after a closing 62 at Hapuna Golf Couse in Kamuela, Hawaii.

Lopez-Chacarra began his day on No. 4 and immediately made three birdies in his first five holes. His only bogey came on the par-4 ninth. He ended the round with birdies at Nos. 16-18, a birdie at No. 2 and an eagle on the par-5 third.

The round set a new course record at Hapuna. It also put Lopez-Chacarra in elite company. Past Cowboys to win this event include Matthew Wolff, Jordan Niebrugge, Jonathan Moore and current head coach Alan Bratton.

Jabari Smith, Walker Kessler earn SEC Honors

Love this team.

To cap off a historic week for Auburn basketball, Walker Kessler and Jabari Smith Jr. have earned weekly honors from the SEC.

Kessler was named the SEC player of the week after a dominant two-game stretch against Georgia and Kentucky. The sophomore center averaged 17 points, 6.5 rebounds and four blocks last week. He blocked six shots against Georgia and scored a game-high 19 points in Auburn’s win over Kentucky.

Smith was named SEC freshman of the week for the fourth time this season. Smith, Auburn’s leading scorer and star freshman, averaged 13 points and seven rebounds in the two games.

Despite his age, Smith continues to come through when Auburn needs him most, constantly stopping opposing runs with clutch baskets.

Auburn, ranked No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time in program history, will return to the court Tuesday at Missouri.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Jaguars: WR Michael Pittman Jr.

It was a tough loss, but Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. capped off another solid game.

With an infuriating loss to end the season, the Indianapolis Colts’ postseason hopes are now in the rearview mirror. Indianapolis had two weeks in a row to “win and get in” but failed both times and will now head back home empty-handed.

While no player really shining today, Michael Pittman Jr. made something out of nothing and was one of Indy’s only players that could move the ball. He finished the game with six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Pittman tried to keep the Colts in the game in the fourth quarter, but it was too late for any magic to really happen. He and Jonathan Taylor really shined in Year 2 and are proving to be the key weapons for the Colts moving forward.

A 9-8 result is not how many people thought this season would end up. This team beat a lot of good teams and fumbled the bag against other inferior opponents. This season had many bright spots but also left much to be desired.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Raiders: RB Jonathan Taylor

Colts RB Jonathan Taylor is the player of the game in the 23-20 loss to the Raiders.

In a tough and infuriating loss, the Indianapolis Colts (9-7) missed an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth, losing to the Las Vegas Raiders (9-7), 23-20.

While Frank Reich’s squad didn’t come away with the win, it was a historic afternoon for the second-year phenom running back Jonathan Taylor.

Taylor finished with 108 yards and a touchdown, eclipsing the 100-yard mark for the 10th time this season. In fact, this was the first game all year that Taylor reached triple digits rushing and the Colts did not come away with a win.

This game was also significant because Taylor broke the Colts’ single-season rushing record set by Edgerrin James in 2000. This is just another milestone in Jonathan Taylor’s young career and certainly not his last.

All is not lost. The Colts still control their own destiny and can get into the playoffs with a win next week in Jacksonville. If the Colts want to make a run in the postseason, they will need to keep feeding Jonathan Taylor and do a better job in the trenches.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Cardinals: QB Carson Wentz

Colts QB Carson Wentz pulled through when the team needed it most.

Take away four starting offensive linemen and three defensive starters (including an All-Pro) and tell me how many teams can win against one of the better squads in the league. The Indianapolis Colts’ 22-16 win against the Arizona Cardinals was all about overcoming adversity. All of those qualities were shown by Carson Wentz tonight.

He finished 18/28 for 225 yards and two touchdowns. While his stat line may not jump off the page, Wentz made throws in the clutch when the Colts needed a big play.

The play of the game came in the fourth quarter when Wentz stepped up in the pocket and fired a missile to Dezmon Patmon in the back of the end zone. While Wentz made some frustrating throws Saturday night, he came through when it mattered and is one of the key reasons Indy came away with the victory.

Sitting at 9-6, the Colts can still win the AFC South. It will take some help, but this team has the ability to make some noise if they make the postseason. With Jonathan Taylor running the rock and Carson Wentz slinging it, this offense can compete against any defensive unit in the NFL.

Cameron Jordan recognized as NFC Defensive Player of the Week

Cameron Jordan recognized as NFC Defensive Player of the Week

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”DhN1O4hFQk-1689745-7498″]

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan was recognized as NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 15 after his efforts against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, spearheading his defense’s historic shutout against Hall of Fame-bound quarterback Tom Brady. Jordan finished the day with two sacks, which put his career total at 100.5 — making him only the second defender in franchise history to pass the century mark.

Jordan was also credited with four quarterback pressures in total, four defensive stops, and a forced fumble. Pro Football Focus defines stops as:

  • On a first down, if the offense gets 45% of the way to a first down or less
  • On a second down, if the offense gets 60% of the way to a first down or less
  • On a third or fourth down, if the offense doesn’t get a first down

So it’s pretty impressive to see him playing at such a high level after missing a game while in COVID-19 protocols. When Jordan is playing his best, everyone around him is able to level up, too. Let’s hope he can keep up the pace as the season draws to a close.

Seahawks RB Travis Homer named NFC special teams player of the week

For his efforts, Homer has been named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Seattle Seahawks’ special teams unit has been balling out all season, but this past week’s win over the San Francisco 49ers was a truly next-level performance.

Leading the charge was running back Travis Homer, who scored on a 73-yard run during a fake punt on the first possession of the game. He also recovered a fumble by the Niners to open the second half. For his efforts, Homer has been named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

Homer has only played 140 snaps on offense this season, stuck near the bottom of Seattle’s depth chart at running back despite numerous injuries. However, he’s become a staple on special teams – playing 204 snaps – or 68% of the team’s total this season.
