The good, the bad, the ugly: The Browns had the Seahawks on the ropes

There was a lot of good, some bad, then it was all ugly in the last two minutes.

With a key opportunity to advance to 5-2 on the season, the Cleveland Browns missed a golden opportunity and folded down the stretch against the Seattle Seahawks. They lost the game 20-24. Head coach Kevin Stefanski and quarterback PJ Walker were having their best game of the season for the majority of the game, but both sides of the football ran out of gas in crunch time.

The Browns have now fallen to 4-3 on the season as the 1-7 Arizona Cardinals are set to come to town in Week 9.

There was a great deal of good in this game to take away! The run game got going, the offense sustained drives with frequency, and the defense locked down Geno Smith and company for the majority of the game. However, there were some bad and ugly in this game as well.

What was good? What was bad? And what was downright ugly from this loss to the Seahawks?

4 Downs: Browns blow a golden opportunity vs. Seahawks

The Browns had a great opportunity to beat the Seahawks with Kevin Stefanski and PJ Walker in sync for most of the game. Until they weren’t.

This one is tough to accept. The Cleveland Browns had the Seattle Seahawks on the ropes for all of the second half. They fell down 14-0 early, fought back, and dominated the time of possession the rest of the way. Head coach Kevin Stefanski called one of his very best games as the lead man of the Browns, and quarterback PJ Walker was making some throws you would not expect him to make.

Then the wheels fell off with two minutes left in the game. All-in-all, the Browns fell to the Seahawks in this Week 8 bout by a score of 20-24. With 5-2 right in their grasps, the Browns sit now at 4-3 on the season with the Arizona Cardinals next up on the docket.

What stood out most from this game? This one was a tough one to steal takeaways from, because for the better part of the game it played out just as Browns fans hoped that it would. Your backup quarterback was doing enough, the run game was going strong, the defense created two turnovers and stuffed Geno Smith and the Seattle offense on eight straight third downs.

Yet the Browns found a way to lose. Here is a gut-wrenching 4 Downs.

Week 8 preview and prediction: Seahawks vs Browns

Week 8 preview and prediction: Seahawks vs Browns

They’re here. They’re finally here! After 22 seasons of waiting, the beloved royal blue retro uniforms are finally making their return to action. The Seattle Seahawks will once again don their original threads as they host the visiting Cleveland Browns in a showdown between two 4-2 teams.

It’s been an interesting road to 4-2 for Cleveland. They started the season with a 24-3 beatdown of the Bengals, lost Week 2 to the Steelers because the offense couldn’t stop turning the ball over, had a similar 27-3 domination over the Titans, then got blown out 28-3 by the Ravens. But following their Week 5 bye, the Browns have been on a two-game win streak.

Cleveland handed San Francisco their first loss of the season by outlasting them 19-17 in a defensive slugfest. Then last week, they stole a win from the Indianapolis Colts in a wild 39-38 shootout. The story of the season for the Browns has been their elite defense, which was on a historic pace for allowing yards before the Colts came. Indianapolis has proven this defense can be attacked, but they should still be rather formidable.

As for the Seahawks, they took care of business last week by defeating the Cardinals 20-10, despite being -3 in turnovers. Seattle’s defense is making the case they deserve to be talked about more as one of the league’s better units, pitching a second half shutout against the Cardinals and holding Cincinnati to only 17 points at home.

The difference in this game is which offense do you trust to have better success against the good defense? For me, the answer firmly lies in who is throwing the ball.

Prediction: Seahawks over Browns 24-10

The edge at quarterback is decisively in favor of Geno Smith and the Seahawks. Browns quarterback PJ Walker has been involved in the last two wins for Cleveland, but he hasn’t exactly been the catalyst for the victories.

Smith and Seattle’s offense hasn’t looked like the well-oiled machine they were against Detroit or Carolina, and I don’t expect them to be lighting it up today either. Browns defensive end Myles Garrett is sure to make life miserable for Smith, but I do think they can make enough plays to overcome Cleveland.

As for the Browns, I predict the Seahawks are going to hone in on stopping the run, forcing Walker to beat them with his arm. Given how Seattle’s defense has been playing, and with the return of Frank Clark, I don’t think it will go too well for the XFL star.

Plus, call it a gut feeling, but the Seahawks should be playing with an emotional edge during their 90’s throwback day. The 12th Man has been waiting a long time for this, and will be fired up. It’s going to be a hostile environment for the Browns.

Deshaun Watson ruled OUT for Week 8 game vs Seahawks

It’s officially official. After a report earlier this morning about the uncertainty Browns quarterback Watson faces to play, the decision has been made. As reported by ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Browns have made a quarterback decision. Watson is out, and backup PJ Walker will make the start.

Watson’s tenure in Cleveland has been marked by controversy, horrendous play, and injury. Unfortunately for him, this is going to continue into Week 8 as the Browns travel to the Pacific Northwest to face the Seattle Seahawks.

PJ Walker has not exactly been lighting it up for the Browns, and has played rather poorly himself. But Cleveland has been winning with him under center. On Sunday, despite Walker going 15-of-32 for 178 yards and an interception, the Browns did survive a wild shootout in Indianapolis to earn a 39-38 win.

Additionally, when Walker started last week against the 49ers, he did do his part to help Cleveland deliver San Francisco their first loss of the season.

The Browns are defined by their defense, it’s easily been the backbone to their 4-2 start this season. It very likely won’t come down to the play of Walker – or Watson, if he was healthy – to determine the Week 8 game on Sunday. What will matter most is if the Seahawks offense can finally get going again, like they were against Carolina and Detroit.

Let’s look at wide receivers for Week 7.

Browns elevate QB PJ Walker with Deshaun Watson questionable

Is this a sign that Watson might not be able to go?

With quarterback Deshaun Watson questionable for Sunday’s matchup with the Baltimore Ravens, the Cleveland Browns have made a move for some insurance by elevating PJ Walker from the practice squad. This doesn’t mean that Watson won’t be active but it certainly means there’s a chance he won’t.

Watson did very little throwing this week as he deals with a sore throwing shoulder. The quarterback said he expects to play but it leaves you wondering just how effective he can be dealing with the shoulder injury.

In addition to the Walker elevation the team also elevated tight end Zaire Mitchell-Paden as David Njoku is now questionable. Njoku was involved in an accident in his backyard that resulted in burns to his arm and face. Outside of these two players, everyone else on the roster is healthy going into another AFC North matchup against the Ravens as the team looks to get another big victory before the bye week.

Chicago Bears stock exchange: Who’s up, who’s down after preseason Week 2?

With just a week to go before roster cutdowns, here are the Bears players whose stock is rising and falling.

Chicago Bears training camp 2023 has come and gone, and there’s only one more week to go in the preseason. In other words, meaningful football isn’t far away. The Bears have one more week to determine who deserves a spot on the initial 53-man roster, but after two preseason games, many players have already made their case.

Some have surprised with impressive performances, while others are falling behind. It doesn’t matter if they’re a projected starter or a reserve; everyone is looking to put their best foot forward to begin the season on a positive note. Going into the final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills this Saturday, here are the players whose stock is rising and falling in the debut of the Chicago Bears stock exchange.

Bears QB Justin Fields will not play Saturday vs. Colts

Justin Fields and other select starters won’t suit up, according to head coach Matt Eberflus

If you were looking forward to watching Justin Fields on Saturday, prepare to be disappointed. Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters on Thursday evening that Fields and other select starters will not play when the Bears take on the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. Eberflus said the joint practices the Bears had with the Colts proved to be enough work for the young quarterback.

Fields and the rest of the Bears are coming off two days of physical practices against the Colts. The Bears quarterback saw plenty of reps and will rest up before the third and final preseason game on August 26th. It will be the first preseason game Fields doesn’t play in his career. Backup P.J. Walker is expected to start for the Bears in his place.

It’s been a light preseason for Fields up to this point. Last Saturday, Fields and the starting offense saw just seven snaps against the Tennessee Titans but made the most out of them. Fields went 3-for-3 with 129 yards and two touchdowns, going to D.J. Moore and Khalil Herbert on long screen passes. The Bears won 23-17.

While Fields is the most notable player who won’t see action in Indianapolis, Eberflus mentioned other select starters will sit as well. It’s unclear as of now who he’s referring to but one can assume players like Eddie Jackson, Jaquan Brisker, Cody Whitehair, and Tremaine Edmunds won’t suit up as they deal with injuries. The Bears and Colts kick off from Lucas Oil Stadium at 6 pm CT on Saturday.

Bears stock watch: Who’s up, who’s down after two weeks of training camp

Training camp performances ebb and flow but here are a few Bears players whose stock is rising as well falling after two weeks.

It’s been an eventful training camp for the Chicago Bears since the players returned to Halas Hall nearly two weeks ago. But things have kicked up a notch over the last few days. Whether it’s been the increased physicality with pads coming on, players jawing with each other following a big play, or even a scuffle or two that’s broken out, something exciting has occurred during every practice.

That includes the performances of the individual players and their progress throughout camp, good and bad. Some have built on their strong starts while others may have dropped off a bit. Here are a few players whose stock has risen in recent days and some who have seen theirs dip.
