Steelers QB Mason Rudolph rips Cincinnati Bengals defense

There’s nothing worse than being referred to as “vanilla” in the NFL. Just ask the Steelers offensive players.

There’s nothing worse than being referred to as “vanilla” in the NFL. Just ask Pittsburgh Steelers offensive players.

But Mason Rudolph did just that when comparing Pittsburgh’s scout team defense to the Cincinnati Bengals starters.

Rudolph was asked if practicing against guys like T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick benefited him during his years as a reserve.

“Yeah, it’s a great group to work against,” Rudolph said in a Wednesday press conference. “You know, we employ so many sorts of pre-snap disguise that it makes you play every snap with a sort of keen sense of awareness of where the safeties are moving… where’s Minkah Fitzpatrick. That prepares you a lot for other teams, other looks.”

The Bengals’ defense wasn’t a concern for Rudolph as it was for him practicing against the Steelers.

“And then when you get a team, Cincinnati was not using their disguise very well. When you get a team that’s maybe less, maybe more vanilla. You can take a breath and say, you know, I’ve seen harder looks at this in practice. So, one of the main benefits of playing here.”

Rudolph and Pickett both put up career numbers against Cincinnati’s 28th-ranked pass defense: Rudolph went 17-of-27 for 290 yards and two scores, and Pickett 24-of-33 for 278 yards. The offense would’ve had an even better outing the first time around if Diontae Johnson hadn’t dropped a touchdown and Jaylen Warren hadn’t fumbled in the red zone.

4 big takeaways from Steelers impressive win over the Bengals

Mason Rudolph and George Pickens carried the Steelers to a huge win.

Not only did the Pittsburgh Steelers snap their three-game losing streak on Saturday, they did it in impressive fashion with a blowout win over the Cincinnati Bengals. This means a sweep for the Steelers over the Bengals and they keep the playoffs in the picture with two games left to play. Here are our big takeaways from the win.

Bengals vs. Steelers viewing info to know.

The Cincinnati Bengals have a Saturday game again in Week 16, their second matchup of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers. They dropped the first game of the series 16-10 in Jake Browning’s first start of his career after Joe Burrow went out for the season. It was his one game in which Browning didn’t lead the team to a win so far.

Since that game, Browning has obviously become much more comfortable leading the Bengals who have won three straight games since then, keeping them right in the thick of the very competitive AFC wild card playoff hunt as one of four teams with an 8-6 record.

At 7-7, the Steelers are still trying to force their way into the playoffs, but they have been spiraling with four losses in their past five games after overperforming for most of the beginning of the year. Their most recent loss was a 30-13 beatdown by the Indianapolis Colts in which Mitch Trubisky took the reins as the starter and threw for just 169 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

With two tough games in the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cleveland Browns to finish the season for the Bengals, a win this week will be extremely important for the playoff race, especially in a scenario where they find themselves tied with the Steelers.

Here’s a quick look at viewing info and key details about the matchup, including the forecast and opponent info.

Steelers final injury report: 3 players ruled out vs. Bengals

The Steelers will be without two starters in the critical Week 16 showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Safety Trenton Thompson has been added to previously ruled out Kenny Pickett and Minkah Fitzpatrick for Saturday’s do-or-die brawl with the Cincinnati Bengals. Another safety, Elijah Riley, remains on injured reserve but has a questionable designation with an ankle injury.

Here’s the rundown from Thursday’s final injury report:

Steelers QB Kenny Pickett ruled out, Mason Rudolph to start vs. Bengals

Kenny Pickett has been ruled out for Saturday’s Bengals matchup, with Mason Rudolph starting.

It was never likely that Kenny Pickett would take the field on Saturday, less than three weeks removed from high ankle surgery, but Mike Tomlin officially ruled Pickett out today, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Pickett practiced on Tuesday for the first time since surgery and was bumped up to second team in Wednesday’s practice ahead of Mitch Trubisky and Trace McSorley, but they must’ve seen something they didn’t like today.

Tomlin named Mason Rudolph the starter on Monday, but said Pickett playing was “not out of the question.”

Pickett exited Pittsburgh’s Week 13 24-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals and underwent surgery the following day. It was initially reported that he’d miss four games, which could bring him back for the team’s season finale in Baltimore versus the Ravens.

With the Steelers all but eliminated from playoff contention, there’s no point in Pickett playing at all again this season.
