Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (44-79) and St. Louis Cardinals (62-60) play the finale of a three-game set Sunday at Busch Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Pirates vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Pirates LHP Steven Brault (0-1, 1.84 ERA) makes his fourth start. He has given up 3 ER on 11 H and 2 BB with 12 K over 14 2/3 IP.

  • Allowed 3 hits and a walk with 4 strikeouts across 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision on the road his last time out Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • Allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and no walks with a season-high 6 strikeouts over 5 IP Aug. 10 in a loss against the Cardinals at PNC Park.

Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright (11-7, 3.26 ERA) makes his 25th start. He has a 1.09 WHIP, 8.2 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 through 154 2/3 IP.

  • Had a four-start win streak snapped Tuesday after allowing 2 earned runs on 9 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts across 6 innings in a loss against the Milwaukee Brewers.
  • Has posted a 6-5 record and 2.79 ERA with 89 strikeouts across 100 IP through 15 starts at home.

Prediction

Cardinals 7, Pirates 3

Money line (ML)

The Cardinals (-220) will cost you more than two times your potential return which is a bit more than my personal money line limit of -180.

AVOID, and look to the run line instead.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The CARDINALS -1.5 (-102) are a much better play on the run line at near even money.

The Cards have been outscored 9-4 while losing the first two games of the series, but St. Louis is 4-1 across Waino’s last five starts, including a 4-0 win Aug. 11 over the Pirates. The Cards have covered the run line in five of Wainwright’s last six starts, including four times as a favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 8.5 (+100) is the lean as the Cardinals look to salvage something in this series. They should be able to make it happen against Brault.

While the Under is 3-0 in Wainwright’s last three starts, including a 4-0 win Aug.11 against Pittsburgh, the Over is 5-2-1 in the last eight for St. Louis following a loss. The Over is also 6-1 in its last seven in the third game of a series.

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (42-79) will look to put an end to a five-game losing skid when they take on the St. Louis Cardinals (62-58) Friday night. The two teams will open their weekend series at 8:15 p.m. ET at Busch Stadium. Let’s analyze the lines around the Pirates vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Pirates RHP Mitch Keller (3-10, 6.86 ERA) makes his 16th start. He has a 1.85 WHIP, 5.0 BB/9 and 8.8 K/9 through 61 2/3 IP.

  • Allowed 10 ER across 14 1/3 IP over three starts since being recalled from Triple-A, while recording a 2.02 WHIP and 5.7 K/9.
  • Has posted a 5.32 ERA with a 9.1 K/9 and 1.9 HR/9 through 23 2/3 IP spanning five road starts in MLB this season.

Cardinals RHP Miles Mikolas (0-0, 2.25 ERA) makes his second start of the season. He made one start in May and allowed 1 ER over 4 IP while whiffing 3 batters.

  • A flexor tendon injury cost Mikolas the 2020 season, and the forearm issue cropped up again following his season debut. He landed on the 60-day injured list, and in five rehab appearances over the past month he has a 4.07 ERA and 6.3 K/9 across 24 1/3 IP.
  • Mikolas recorded an excellent 2.83 ERA across 32 starts in 2018, but took a step back with a 4.16 mark in 32 starts the following season.

Prediction

Cardinals 6, Pirates 4

Money line (ML)

The Pirates come into Friday having lost 13 of their last 14 games, and their 18-44 road record is fourth-worst in the majors. They lost each of Keller’s last four starts by a combined score of 38-10, and his 6.86 ERA is third-worst among all pitchers with 60 or more innings.

The Cardinals won seven of their last nine games as they try to get back into the NL wild-card hunt but it’s difficult to project what they will get from Mikolas following such a long layoff.

The price is a little too steep here so PASS.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Pirates are 5-10 when Keller takes the mound, and nine of those 10 losses were by at least 3 runs. The Cardinals have been playing much better than the Pirates, and recently swept them in a three-game series in Pittsburgh.

While Mikolas is a true wild card, he has a better chance of success than his counterpart, who has struggled throughout the season.

Look for the CARDINALS -1.5 (-107) to take care of business and win by multiple runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Cardinals scored 6 or more runs in five of their last seven games and are facing a pitcher in Keller who has been getting knocked around all year.

The St. Louis offense should have another good day, while the Pirates aren’t likely to get shut down by Mikolas in his first start in three months.

OVER 8.5 (-120) is the most appealing play on the board in this game.

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (28-46) and St. Louis Cardinals (36-40) play the third of a four-game set Saturday with a 2:15 p.m. ET first pitch at Busch Gardens. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Pirates vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP JT Brubaker is the projected starting pitcher for the Pirates. He is 4-6 with a 3.77 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 9.0 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 in 71 2/3 IP over 13 starts.

Brubaker is coming off arguably his finest outing of the season. He allowed just two earned runs, three hits and no walks with a season-best nine strikeouts across 6 2/3 innings in a loss Sunday against the Cleveland Indians.

RHP Adam Wainwright is the projected starting pitcher for the Cardinals. He is 5-5 with a 3.74 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 8.7 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 86 2/3 IP over 14 starts.

Wainwright has won two of his past three starts, and he hasn’t lost since June 3. He also has lasted at least six innings with quality starts in each of his four outings in June, posting a 2.67 ERA. It’s easily his best ERA for a month this season.

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 5:05 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Pirates +125 (bet $100 to win $125) | Cardinals -155 (bet $155 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Pirates +1.5 (-155) | Cardinals -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under: 8.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Prediction

Cardinals 5, Pirates 3

Money line (ML)

CARDINALS (-155) is the play, although it certainly comes with some risk. The Pirates (+125) have picked up wins in the first two in this series, outscoring the Cards 13-6.

While St. Louis has lost five in a row, they won last time Waino was on the hill. In fact, they’re 3-0 in his past three appearances.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The CARDINALS -1.5 (+125) have been skidding lately, but Wainwright is the stopper, and he’ll get it done against the Bucs in this one.

Not only are the Cards 3-0 across his past three starts, but they have also won by two or more runs in each of those outings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 8.5 (-110) is the lean, ever so slightly. While the Under is just 2-3 across Wainwright’s past five starts, the Under is 5-1-1 in the previous seven assignments for Brubaker. Look for the bats to struggle somewhat in this matinee affair.

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (27-46) and St. Louis Cardinals (36-39) play the second game of their four-game series Friday at Busch Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Pirates vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

The Pirates won the first game of the series 8-2 Thursday as the top third of their lineup (2B Adam Frazier, 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes and CF Bryan Reynolds) went a combined 8-for-12 at the plate with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.

Season series: Cardinals lead 5-1.

RHP Wil Crowe takes the ball for the Pirates. Crowe is 0-4 with a 6.42 ERA (40 2/3 IP, 29 ER), 1.57 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9 and 8.4 K/9 over nine starts and one relief appearance.

  • Last outing: No-decision with 4 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB and 2 K in Pittsburgh’s 6-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians Saturday.
  • Crowe took a loss May 2 against the Cardinals with a stat line of 5 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 4 BB and 2 K.
  • vs. Cardinals on the current roster: 17 at-bats with a .176/.364/.412 slash line, 2/4 K/BB, 1 HR and 3 RBIs.

LHP Kwang Hyun Kim makes his 12th start for the Cardinals. Kim is 1-5 with a 3.60 ERA (50 IP, 20 ER), 1.32 WHIP, 3.2 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 this year.

  • Last outing: Loss, 1-0, with 4 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB and 2 K Sunday at Atlanta.
  • vs. Pirates on the current roster: 36 at-bats with a .250/.250/.389 slash line, 5/0 K/BB, 1 HR and 3 RBIs.

  • Money line: Pirates +145 (bet $100 to win $145) | Cardinals -175 (bet $175 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Pirates +1.5 (-140) | Cardinals -1.5 (+115)
  • Over/Under: 8.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Prediction

Cardinals 5, Pirates 3

Money line (ML)

PASS even though I “lean” to St. Louis’s First 5 Innings run line because the money line is too expensive given the Cardinals’ four-game losing skid and dropping six of their last seven games.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

“LEAN” to the CARDINALS -0.5 (-115) FIRST 5 INNINGS for a half unit since Kim’s advanced pitching numbers vs. current Pirates batters far exceed Crowe’s against current St. Louis hitters.

In fact, most of Kim’s pitching peripherals against Pittsburgh are better than Crowe vs. the Cardinals including FIP, opponent’s wOBA, expected slugging percentage, K% and exit velocity.

I’m taking St. Louis’s First 5 Innings instead of the full game because the Cardinals relievers have the highest BB%, xFIP and SIERA in the majors, so I’m looking to avoid that bullpen.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 5 (-125) FIRST 5 INNINGS for 1 unit because Pittburgh’s lineup is in the bottom-5 of the MLB on the road and vs. left-handed pitching in advanced hitting metrics such as wRC+, wOBA and hard-hit rate.

Also, St. Louis’s lineup isn’t much better than Pittsburgh’s. The Cardinals are 22nd in WAR, 25th in wRC+, 27th in wOBA and 21st in hard-hit rate.

The Under is also a “contrarian play” on a market that’s betting the Over heavily and the Pirates are 2-6-1 O/U in Crowe’s nine starts this season despite Crowe having a bloated ERA.

As with St. Louis’s First 5 Innings run line, the UNDER 5 (-125) FIRST 5 INNINGS is a way to avoid both teams’ overcooked and unreliable bullpens.

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (26-46) open a four-game road series Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals (36-38). First pitch is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET at Busch Stadium. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Pirates vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Chad Kuhl is the projected starting pitcher for the Pirates. He is 1-4 with a 5.66 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 6.9 K/9 and 5.7 BB/9 in 35 IP over 8 starts.

Kuhl has allowed 3 or more earned runs in five of his eight starts this season but is coming off his best game, allowing only 1 ER on 4 H and 1 BB with 4 K in 6 IP against Cleveland.

RHP Carlos Martinez is the projected starting pitcher for the Cardinals. He is 3-8 with a 6.62 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 6.2 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 68 IP over 13 starts.

Martinez has taken a loss in his last four starts and has an ERA of 15.34 in that stretch. The Cardinals are 4-9 with him on the mound.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Pirates +1.5 (-155) | Cardinals -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under: 9 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Prediction

Pirates 7, Cardinals 4

Money line (ML)

The Pirates have lost 11 in a row on the road and have only three wins in their last 15 games overall. Only the Rockies and Diamondbacks have fewer road wins than the Pirates’ 10. They are 4-4 with Kuhl on the mound.

The Cardinals are 5-14 in their last 19 games but have won their last four home games. They have lost five of Martinez’s last six starts.

Take the PIRATES (+125).

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Pirates are 32-40 ATS this season and 14-21 ATS on the road. They did not score a run in eight innings against Martinez on May 2.

The Cardinals are 37-37 ATS overall and 17-17 ATS at home. They have covered the spread in just 5 of their last 19 games and have not picked up an ATS victory in Martinez’s last seven starts dating back to May 2nd against the Pirates. Also, it’s impossible to ignore Martinez’s ERA in his last four outings.

Take the PIRATES +1.5 (-155).

Over/Under (O/U)

Six of Kuhl’s eight starts this season have had totals of nine or more, while six of Martinez’s last seven starts have also had totals of nine or more.

Four of the last seven games have gone Over the projected total for the Pirates and three of the last five for the Cardinals have also hit the Over.

Take OVER 9 (-110).

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (17-23) visit the St. Louis Cardinals (23-18) for a two-game series at Busch Stadium. Tuesday’s first pitch is slated for 7:45 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Pirates vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Cardinals lead 3-0 – they swept a three-game series in Pittsburgh April 30-May 2.

The NL Central rivals both had Monday off after returning from the West Coast. The Bucs are coming off a four-game split at the San Francisco Giants, while the Cardinals were swept in three at the San Diego Padres.

RHP JT Brubaker is projected to start for the Pirates Tuesday. Brubaker, who made his MLB debut last July, is 3-2 with a 2.58 ERA (38 1/3 IP, 11 ER), 1.12 WHIP, 9.6 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 7 starts this season.

  • Last outing: Win, 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K in 7-2 home victory vs. Cincinnati Reds May 11
  • Career vs. Pirates: 0-1, 3.86 ERA (7 IP, 3 ER), 10 H, 0 BB, 11 K in 1 start and 1 relief appearance

RHP John Gant is the Cardinals’ projected starter. The six-year veteran is 2-3 with a 1.83 ERA (34 1/3 IP, 7 ER), 1.63 WHIP, 7.6 K/9 and 7.1 BB/9 in 7 starts. He is tied for the MLB lead with 27 walks.

  • Last outing: No-decision, 5 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 K at Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday – the Cardinals lost 4-1
  • Career vs. Pirates: 4-2, 3.93 ERA (34 1/3 IP, 15 ER), 1.34 WHIP, 7.9 K/9 in 5 starts and 12 relief appearances

Pirates at Cardinals odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 7:05 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Pirates +115 (bet $100 to win $115) | Cardinals -140 (bet $140 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Pirates +1.5 (-175) | Cardinals -1.5 (+145)
  • Over/Under: 7.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Prediction

Cardinals 5, Pirates 2

Money line (ML)

ST. LOUIS (-140) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Cardinals, who must be happy to return home after dropping three straight at the Padres, have had the Pirates’ number recently. They are 23-9 vs. the Pirates over the last three seasons: 3-0 this year, 6-4 in 2020 and 14-5 in 2019.

The Pirates rank last in runs scored per game (3.45), and they’ve hit the fewest home runs (26) among all 30 major-league teams.

These projected starters faced off April 30 in Pittsburgh with Gant coming out on top 7-3. Gant scattered 3 hits and 5 walks in allowing just 1 earned run with 2 strikeouts in 5 innings. Brubaker yielded 3 earned runs on 7 hits with 0 walks and 7 K’s over 5 innings in taking the loss.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

ST. LOUIS -1.5 (+145) is worth a HALF-UNIT wager. The Cardinals are the third-best team when it comes to covering the run line. They beat the Pirates by scores of 7-3, 12-5 and 3-0 in the three games at Pittsburgh earlier this season.

ATS records: Pirates 19-21 | Cardinals 25-16

Over/Under (O/U)

Back UNDER 7.5 (-105) to win a QUARTER UNIT. The Under is 1-6 in Gant’s 7 starts, while it’s 2-4 when Brubaker takes the hill.

The fear is the Cardinals are on a 3-0 Over run, and two of the three games in the earlier meeting in Pittsburgh cashed Over tickets.

O/U records: Pirates 17-21-2 | Cardinals 19-18-3
