USA TODAY Sports is locking in Rutgers football for their bowl destination

Rutgers football is trending towards a particular bowl game according to USA TODAY.

It looks like there is no suspense for Rutgers football as far as their bowl game destination. The Scarlet Knights appear to be heading back to some pretty well-known turf.

According to Erick Smith of USA TODAY, Rutgers is heading to the Pinstripe Bowl. This isn’t a huge surprise, given that Smith has been very consistent in lining up Rutgers for a trip to the Bronx for well over a month.

The opponent, according to Smith, is ACC opponent Georgia Tech.

The Pinstripe Bowl, played at Yankee Stadium (Bronx, New York) is the closest bowl game to Rutgers geographically. It would provide the best opportunity for Rutgers fans to be able to travel in numbers for a bowl game.

Georgia Tech comes into this potential bowl game meeting with Rutgers at 6-6 (4-4 ACC). They’ve lost two of their last three games (although they were quality losses against a solid Clemson team and a tight loss to No. 1 Georgia).

Rutgers has not outright made a bowl game since 2014, their first year in the Big Ten. In 2011, they played in the Pinstripe Bowl for the first, beating Iowa State in a game that was the final one on the sidelines for head coach Greg Schiano during his first tenure with the program.

USA TODAY Sports has a bowl projection for Rutgers football

One bowl game is trending heavily for Rutgers football.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. –Rutgers seems locked and locked for a rumble in the Bronx and an appearance in the Pinstripe Bowl.

That is the latest projection – well, actually it is the most recent update from USA TODAY Sports and Erick Smith – as for where Rutgers will land this bowl season. For four straight weeks, Rutgers is being projected to the Pinstripe Bowl. And for the last two weeks (including this most recent update), Rutgers has been projected to play Georgia Tech.

The annual bowl game is played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Geographically, it is the closest game to Rutgers and should be a home field advantage for the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers had been linked with other bowls, including the Music City Bowl and the Las Vegas Bowl. But Saturday’s loss at Iowa seems to have dampened that outlook.

Now at 6-4 (3-4 Big Ten), Rutgers would likely need two more wins if they are to get a more prestigious bowl landing spot.

Georgia Tech is currently 5-5 (4-3 ACC). They’ve had an up-and-down season with two ranked wins but some bad losses. On Saturday, they lost 42-21 at Clemson.

Where is CBS Sports projecting Rutgers football for a bowl game?

CBS Sports has a projection for Rutgers football’s bowl destination.

CBS Sports is projecting a familiar bowl game for Rutgers football following this weekend’s loss at No. 22 Iowa.

Rutgers is now 6-4 (3-4 Big Ten) and hopes for a prestigious bowl game such as the Music City Bowl seems to be slipping away. CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm hasn’t changed his projection for Rutgers over the last few weeks, and he is sticking with the Pinstripe Bowl as the location.

In his projections, Palm has Rutgers playing Georgia Tech in the Pinstripe Bowl. This would be the third time that Rutgers is in this game, which is hosted by Yankee Stadium (Bronx, New York).

This year’s game is scheduled for Dec. 28. First pitch is at 2:15 PM ET.

(Yes, that’s a baseball joke, relax).

Rutgers first played in the game in 2011, beating Iowa State in what was the last game of head coach Greg Schiano’s first tenure with the Scarlet Knights. They then played No. 25 Notre Dame in the Pinstripe Bowl in 2013, losing that game.

[lawrence-related id=32022,32020]

Palm took a lot of shtick from Rutgers fans this past spring for projecting that the men’s basketball program would not make the NCAA Tournament. The CBS Sports college football insider was rather right on that one.

[lawrence-related id=32014]

Georgia Tech is 5-5 following a 42-21 loss to Clemson over the weekend. They have signature wins this season over ranked teams in Miami and North Carolina.

Geographically, the Pinstripe Bowl is the closest bowl game to Rutgers.

USA TODAY Sports has an old Big East rival in a bowl game for Rutgers football

Rutgers football has a good bowl projection from USA TODAY.

Rutgers football just can’t escape all these Big East rivalries. The latest bowl projection from USA TODAY Sports has Rutgers playing a team it knows quite well.

At 6-2 (3-2 Big Ten), it all seems real as Rutgers is bowl-eligible following Saturday’s 31-14 win at Indiana. And now all those bowl projections from the last few weeks finally have meaning.

According to USA TODAY’s Erick Smith, Rutgers is heading to the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 28 where it will face Boston College. The two programs were members of the Big East two decades ago before Boston College and Virginia Tech left to join the ACC.

Earlier this year, Rutgers won over Virginia Tech to improve their then record to 3-0 on the season. Rutgers has four wins on the year against Power Five competition.

Last year, using a late-game drive, Rutgers won at Boston College in the season opener for both programs.

The Pinstripe Bowl is geographically the closest bowl to Rutgers, as it is played in New York City (Bronx) at Yankee Stadium. Rutgers owns a 1-1 record in the bowl game.

Boston College’s head coach is Jeff Hafley, who was a member of the Rutgers coaching staff during Schiano’s first tenure with the program.

One of two bowl projections from ESPN this week has Rutgers heading to the Pinstripe Bowl.

USA TODAY is making a Rutgers football bowl projection (for a third straight week)

USA TODAY is making a bowl projection for Rutgers football.

The bowl destination remains the same for Rutgers football, but the opponent has changed in the most recent projections from USA TODAY.

In his weekly update to his bowl projections, USA TODAY’s Erick Smith has Rutgers locked in for a third straight week in heading to the Pinstripe Bowl. In the previous two projections, he had Rutgers playing Wake Forest in the game but he has updated that outlook this week.

Rutgers remains, but now they face Georgia Tech.

Rutgers (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) is coming off a tough 24-13 weekend loss at Wisconsin. After an upset win at Miami over the weekend, things certainly are looking up for Georgia Tech (3-3, 2-1 ACC).

Three weeks ago, Georgia Tech beat Wake Forest, the team Rutgers was projected to play in the Pinstripe Bowl. Wake Forest, coincidentally, was the team that Rutgers faced in the 2021 Gator Bowl.

[lawrence-related id=30973,30966]

That year, Rutgers was a last-minute replacement when Texas A&M had to pull out of the game.

In terms of bowl eligibility, Rutgers needs two more wins to be bowl eligible. They have not accomplished that since 2014, their first season in the Big Ten.

The Pinstripe Bowl is held annually at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Rutgers beat Iowa State in the 2011 game in what was the final game of head coach Greg Schiano’s first tenure with the program.

Where is USA TODAY projecting Rutgers football lands for a bowl game?

Rutgers football has a bowl projection from USA TODAY this week.

Rutgers is currently three wins away from bowl eligibility, with the Scarlet Knights already claiming two Power Five wins this season. Count USA TODAY among the media outlets believing that Rutgers is trending towards a bowl game.

And with outlets such as ESPN also projecting at least six wins for Rutgers (well, 6.3 wins to be exact), there is some genuine and legitimate optimism about the program heading to bowl eligibility for the first time since 2014.

On Tuesday morning, Rutgers received a projection from USA TODAY which sends the Scarlet Knights to the Pinstripe Bowl.

The opponent in the game is Wake Forest.

It is the same projection from USA TODAY that Rutgers received the week before. Rutgers is now 3-1 on the season following Saturday’s 31-7 loss at No. 2 Michigan.

The Scarlet Knights play Wagner this week.

In 2021, Rutgers served as a replacement team and played Wake Forest in the Gator Bowl. Texas A&M, scheduled to be Wake Forest’s opponent, had to withdraw from the game.

[lawrence-related id=30461,30459]

Rutgers has played in the Pinstripe Bowl twice. In 2011, they beat Iowa State in a game that was Greg Schiano’s final Rutgers game before leaving for the NFL and becoming head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Latest USA TODAY projection has Rutgers football in a bowl game

Rutgers football could be trending towards a bowl game according to USA TODAY.

Rutgers football is 3-0 and what was a pretty dire outlook from much of the national media is suddenly flipped. Rutgers is halfway towards bowl eligibility with nine games left in the season.

And suddenly, there is promise and potential for Rutgers to be .500 or better for the first time since 2014. This was also the last time that the Scarlet Knights not only won a bowl game, but were bowl-eligible outright.

According to USA TODAY’s Erick Smith, Rutgers is being projected for the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 28. They are being pegged to play Wake Forest.

Rutgers is well acquainted with the Pinstripe Bowl, having played in the annual postseason game at Yankee Stadium twice.

In 2011, Rutgers beat Iowa State in what was the last game of the Greg Schiano 1.0 era. In 2013, Rutgers lost 29-16 to Notre Dame under former head coach Kyle Flood.

It was Wake Forest, coincidentally, that Rutgers played two years ago in the Gator Bowl when the Scarlet Knights were a last-minute replacement team when Texas A&M was forced to pull out of the game.

[lawrence-related id=30268,30258]

Wake Forest won that game 38-10.

Like Rutgers, it is a 3-0 start for Wake Forest. They beat Elon in their season opener then rattled off wins over Vanderbilt and last week against Old Dominion.

They host Georgia Tech this weekend.

Notre Dame football: Tommy Rees through the years

Tommy Rees has spent roughly 1/3 of his life at Notre Dame. Here’s a look at his decade with the Irish.

Outside of a three-year window from 2014-2016, [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] has been associated with Notre Dame football since entering as a freshman in 2010.  He took over as the starting quarterback that season, guiding the Irish to wins in their final four games.

2011 saw Dayne Crist start at quarterback before Rees again took over the reigns along with Andrew Hendrix in helping the Irish to a Champs Sports Bowl berth.  Projected to be the starter in 2012, Rees was arrested at an off-campus party the summer before.  As a result he was suspended by Brian Kelly for the opening game that year and Everett Golson wound up leading the Irish to a 12-0 regular season that year.

Rees closed his playing career by helping the Irish to a 9-4 record and Pinstripe Bowl victory over Rutgers.  After getting into coaching as a graduate assistant on Pat Fitzgerald’s Northwestern staff in 2015, Rees spent 2016 with the San Diego Chargers.

Rees returned to Notre Dame in 2017 where he was quarterbacks coach for two seasons.  Since 2019 he’s been Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator.

In all, Rees has spent 10 years at Notre Dame.  Will it be more or will he take a prime coordinator job elsewhere?  Time will tell but as we wait, enjoy a look back at Rees as both a player and assistant coach at Notre Dame.

Penn State’s Rose Bowl victory gave the Big Ten a winning record this bowl season

The Big Ten is sending two teams to the College Football Playoff for the first time in conference history, but the storylines this bowl season extend beyond Michigan and Ohio State continuing to play for a national championship. Wisconsin’s new head coach, Luke Fickell, already stepped in and led the Badgers to a postseason win and Minnesota took care of Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl to get the Big Ten off to a good 2-0 start with both wins coming against power conference opponents.

We are keeping tabs on every Big Ten bowl result to see just how the conference stacks up this postseason. This list of Big Ten bowl games will be updated throughout the bowl season once games go final.
