BOOM! Ohio State lands offensive tackle in transfer portal

Meets a big need #GoBucks

Ohio State addressed a real need today by landing offensive tackle Phillip Daniels from the transfer portal. Daniels was the No. 4 rated tackle in the portal and has played the last two seasons at the University of Minnesota.

The 6 foot 5, 315-pound tackle hails from the great state of Ohio and is a Cincinnati native. He was a three-star recruit out of Princeton High School, the same high school that produced Paris Johnson Jr. who also happens to be Daniels’ cousin.

Growing up in Ohio, Daniels was a lifelong Buckeye fan but didn’t receive an offer from Ohio State. So he headed to the open arms of P.J. Fleck and the Golden Gophers. The pull to wear the Scarlet and Gray was too much as the young man committed to OSU after visiting Columbus on Tuesday.

Daniels becomes the first member to join the Buckeyes from the portal this season and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Ohio State will continue looking for more help on the offensive line and running back, two positions where the Bucks are expected to be thin going into spring practice due to graduation and early NFL draft declarations.

‘Commanders are one of 14 NFL teams to not….’

It’s been a while.

Warren Sharp took a moment Sunday evening to educate his readers that 14 NFL teams have not won a playoff game in the last five seasons.

I immediately thought, “Five years? Why stop there, Warren?”

Well, technically Sharp didn’t. He did actually say “5+ years.”

Commanders fans were already quite aware of this discouraging and frustrating NFL reality. You see, we are all too aware that this NFL franchise has not won a playoff game in well over five years.

Hey Warren, try 18 NFL seasons without a team playoff win!

That’s right, Washington NFL fans have not enjoyed a playoff win since Joe Gibbs 2.0 came out of NFL retirement because he loved the franchise so much he wanted to bring it back some respect.

Gregg Williams was the defensive coordinator, Don Breaux was the offensive coordinator, and Joe Bugel was the offensive line coach.

Quarterback Patrick Ramsey started the season opener, and Mark Brunell the other 15 games. Clinton Portis gained 1,516 yards rushing, including 11 touchdowns.

Santana Moss gained 1,483 receiving yards on 84 receptions (17.7 yards per reception) and 9 receiving touchdowns. Chris Cooley generated 774 receiving yards on 71 receptions and 7 touchdowns.

Ladell Betts returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. Antonio Brown returned one 91 yards for a touchdown. No, not that “Antonio Brown.”

John Hall and Nick Novak connected on 17 of 21 field goals and all 42 extra-point attempts.

Remember linebacker Lemar Marshall?

He led the team in tackles (101) and interceptions (4). Defensive end Phillip Daniels led with 8.0 quarterback sacks. He and linebacker Marcus Washington each led with 11 tackles for a loss.

What a year that secondary had, getting their hands on balls. Safety Sean Taylor led with 12 passes defended, and corners Walt Harris and Shawn Springs collected 11 and 10, respectively.

In fact, the defense was most responsible for the last playoff win in franchise history those 18 seasons ago, when Washington went down to Tampa and beat the Bucs 17-10.

Brunell was injured and unable to pass effectively, but Coach Joe was not putting Ramsey out there against the Bucs defense. The Washington offense totaled only 120 yards. But they won the turnover battle 3-1, including a Sean Taylor 51-yard fumble recovery touchdown run.

And so it was 18 NFL seasons ago when the Washington NFL team was the “Redskins,” and they last won a playoff game.

3 potential defensive assistants that could reunite with Jim Schwartz in Cleveland

Who could the new DC add to his staff?

The Cleveland Browns acting quickly this offseason to get their new defensive coordinator, hiring Jim Schwartz almost one month ago. Now both defensive backs coach Jeff Howard and defensive line coach Chris Kiffin have moved on leaving Schwartz the chance to add some of his guys to the staff.

The former Detroit Lions head coach has a long career and has worked with a bunch of talented coaches in his time in the league. I have three names that worked with Schwartz in Philadelphia when he was the defensive coordinator that he may pursue to come to Cleveland with him for the 2023 season.

Report: Jaguars expected to hire Brenston Buckner as DL coach

Brentson Buckner was a longtime NFL player and has been a defensive line coach in the league since 2013

New Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson has already added a defensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and it looks like he may be closing in on a defensive line coach hire, as well. According to a report from Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, the Jaguars plan to hire Brentson Buckner to fill the vacant role which was held by current Oregon Ducks defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi in 2021.

Buckner is a longtime former player, registering 12 seasons in the league before beginning his coaching career. He has spent the last two seasons as the defensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals and previously held the same position in Oakland, Tampa Bay, and in a previous stint with Arizona from 2013-17.

Wilson reported earlier that the Jaguars were also considering Phillip Daniels for the position. Daniels worked with Pederson in Philadelphia and was previously an executive in Washington but has been out of coaching since 2019.

This hire makes a lot of sense for Jacksonville, as Buckner is a well-traveled defensive line coach and is well regarded around the league. He could soon find himself as a coordinator candidate, but for now, the Jaguars seem to have landed a stud for the defensive coaching staff.

Eagles ‘considering’ hiring a familiar name for new defensive line coach

Philadelphia Eagles ‘considering’ internal promotion at defensive line coach

The Philadelphia Eagles once again need a defensive line coach and the organization won’t have to look far to find an internal candidate.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, special assistant Matt Burke is a name that could replace Phillip Daniels as a defensive line coach.

Burke, 43, joined the Eagles before the 2019 season as a defensive special assistant under Jim Schwartz, and his relationship with the Eagles defensive coordinator goes all the way back to 2004 with the Titans.
