Walks are going to determine how this game plays out early on as both guys have walked at least 2 in each start. Philadelphia has been undone by home runs, and that doesn’t figure to be a large factor today against a White Sox team that’s 17th in MLB with 18.

I’m going to LEAN PHILLIES (-120) as they seem to be figuring some things out.

Run line/Against the spread

Both teams are 7-11 on the RL this season, which shows they have underachieved. They hadn’t faced each other since 2019 prior to Tuesday’s doubleheader, but the Phillies are 10-4 in the last 14 meetings. Philly’s 4 wins in their last 10 games have all been by at least 3 runs.

Over/Under

The Phillies are 7-3 O/U over the last 10, and the White Sox are 4-4-2. One went Over and one went Under Tuesday. The wind is blowing straight in at 13 mph, but we have a couple of walk-friendly pitchers and 2 bad bullpens. Philadelphia is 28th in bullpen ERA (6.30), and Chicago is dead-last at 7.04. Over/Under

The Under is 5-0-1 in Chicago’s last 6 nightcaps of doubleheaders.

Both of these bullpens have been awful so far. They own the league’s highest two ERAs (Phillies 6.83, White Sox 7.57), but they have both been severely BABIP-ripped so far (Phillies .353, White Sox .400). They aren’t terribly likable ‘pens overall, but they are better than advertised by their current surface numbers.

This play is fueled all around by BABIP and similar “luck” factors. Both starting pitchers have pitched better than what shows in their stat lines.

The Chicago weather report calls for a cold night with a double-digit wind blowing in. — upwards of 20 miles per hour — blowing out toward center field. In a second game when a frontline bat or two perhaps gets rested, BACK THE UNDER 8.5 (+100).

Moneyline

Wheeler is the better starter, but Lynn is attached to more value. Across Lynn’s 2022-23 seasons (24 combined starts), he’s allowed 16.1% of all fly balls to be booked as home runs. That’s a high mark. There is gopher-itis and then there is acute gopher-itis, and Lynn has a case of the latter. Expect Lynn to shave that 16% down to something closer to the league average (11.4% last season).

The Phillies have the better offense too, but these prices are closer to value for the home nine. PASS, but consider a partial-unit play on the White Sox if that tag reaches +110.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS. The RL pricing is better on the Philadelphia side but I’m not convinced its going to squeak out a win, and especially not one by multiple runs.

Over/Under

The Over is 7-0-1 in Chicago’s last 8 home games.

Both of these bullpens have been awful so far. They both carry Boeing ERAs (Phillies 7.19, White Sox 7.32) into this series and both have walked a ton of batters. While they have been hurt by high BABIP figures, they are bottom-third units at best.

Wheeler is a solid starter, but he’s gettable on the road (last 3 years: 3.70 ERA road vs. 2.19 ERA home).

The Chicago weather report calls for a cold night but one with a brisk wind — upwards of 20 miles per hour — blowing out toward center field. BACK THE OVER 8 (-105).
