Stepping up in place of Myles Garrett a common theme for the Browns defenders

Olivier Vernon, Denzel Ward, Sione Takitaki and others all stepped up to cover the hole with Garrett out due to COVID-19

One of the biggest takeaways from the Browns’ 22-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles was how reverent the Cleveland players were to Myles Garrett after the game.

Garrett missed the game after testing positive for COVID-19 late in the week. The NFL’s sack leader was a leading contender for Defensive Player of the Year and a darkhorse MVP candidate.

Fortunately, several of his defensive brethren stepped up with big games. Olivier Vernon bagged three sacks. Denzel Ward picked off one pass, broke up four others and created a pick-six for LB Sione Takitaki with a superb QB hit on Carson Wentz.

They all talked about stepping up to replace Garrett and honor their missing cohort.

“We all missed Myles,” Vernon said after the game. “We wish he could have been out here playing. At the end of the day, everybody played as a team, made the stops when we had to and made the big plays when we had to.”

Takitaki, who was a captain for the game, praised the line for its outstanding game even without Garrett.

“We knew that Myles was going to be out and I feel like those guys are like, ‘Let’s get it going. We are going to make sure that we are going to hold our own.’ I feel like they went out today and proved it”, Takitaki said in his Zoom.

Ward focused more on the team mentality that carried the Browns to the win, but he too missed Garrett.

“Definitely looking forward to getting Myles back whenever we can. He is obviously a big addition to our team. Guys stepped up today and made plays.”

Then there’s Baker Mayfield. The quarterback offered his own flavor on the situation, dropping his weekly hip-hop quote in the process.

“Yeah, obviously that is not a one-man job to fill those shoes. I know that is probably the most cliché thing, but it is just the truth. We had a ton of guys step up. When they knew that Myles was out, they knew they had to get funky on the field, and just like an old batch of collard greens, they just played well together,” Mayfield said.

Garrett could return in Week 12 if he can clear COVID-19 protocols in time.

Studs and Duds from the Browns win over the Eagles

Cleveland scored an impressive victory over a division-leading team on Sunday. The Browns vanquished the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles, 22-17, in a rainy FirstEnergy Stadium setting, improving to 7-3 in the process.

The Browns received key performances from several players in the win. There were also some unsavory performances that need to get cleaned up, as is expected in a game where style points were optional.

Here’s who stood out as studs and duds from the Browns in the Week 11 win.

Instant analysis: Browns defense, timely rushing offense save the day vs. Eagles

A pick-6, a safety and five sacks from the Browns defense carried the team to a win

No Myles Garrett? No problem. Garrett’s defensive mates stepped up in a big way and carried the Cleveland Browns to a 22-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in a rain-soaked FirstEnergy Stadium.

Cleveland’s defense dominated a mistake-prone Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia offense. From Sione Takitaki’s pick-six to start the scoring to Olivier Vernon’s safety — one of his three sacks of Wentz — the Browns defense consistently saved the day until the offense finally caught its footing.

After just 18 yards on 13 carries at halftime, the Browns run game got untracked. It took a fantastic effort from Nick Chubb on a 54-yard run to really get it rolling. Kareem Hunt finished off that drive with a fancy, leaping TD run of his own to effectively salt away the victory.

The defense deserves the credit, however. Missing Garrett, a viable Defensive Player of the Year candidate, the front stiffened impressively after a rough opening drive. Vernon dominated his individual matchup with Jason Peters. Young Vincent Taylor showed energy and effectiveness in the middle.

Denzel Ward added a late pick off Wentz, who played very loose with the ball security all day. The downfield coverage was solid all day long, on the few occasions where Wentz had time.

Baker Mayfield wasn’t great, but he made enough key completions to get the job done. He outshined Wentz, for those keeping score at home. The box score shows the Browns’ defense stepping up on third downs. Mayfield’s ability to hit just enough of those, combined with the long runs, overcame some poor special teams and an otherwise lackluster offensive effort.

This is the kind of sloppy game the Browns need to win. And for the second week in a row, they did it. It’s a nice step for a team that is 7-3 for the first time since 1994. Wins matter more than style points, though this one had some flair for Cleveland, too.

Watch: Nick Chubb’s nasty stiff-arm brings back memories of Jim Brown

Nick Chubb was not having a great game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11. The Eagles defense had done a fine job of bottling up the Browns’ Pro Bowl running back.

And just like that, Chubb broke off one of the most impressive runs of 2020.

That’s what makes Chubb so dangerous. He’s a home-run hitter out of the backfield and can punish tacklers who get in his way. Eagles DE Joe Ostman learned that the hard way.

Ostman is the man on the business end of this vicious stiff-arm from Chubb. It took several Eagles to bring Chubb down some 54 yards down the field.

This is a run that could have easily come from Jim Brown back in the day. Today, it’s Nick Chubb’s time to shine.

The Eagles have some COVID-19 issues of their own in Week 11

The Eagles will be without 3 players and 2 coaches in Week 11

The Cleveland Browns will be missing their best player, defensive end Myles Garrett, when they take the field at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday. Fullback Andy Janovich and offensive lineman Chris Hubbard will also be out after testing positive for COVID-19, as did Garrett.

The Browns’ foe in Week 11, the Philadelphia Eagles, have some pandemic-related issues of their own. The Eagles will be without three players and two coaches on Sunday.

Wide receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, running back Corey Clement and defensive end Vinny Curry were all placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list this week after the team announced a player tested positive. Practice squad WR Deontay Burnett is also on the reserve list.

In addition, two coaches will not make the trip to Cleveland. passing game coordinator Press Taylor and wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead have been ruled out due to COVID-19 protocols.

On the injury front, only safety Rudy Ford was ruled out by the Eagles. Offensive tackles Lane Johnson and Jason Peters do not carry injury designations into the game.

Browns final injury report for Week 11 has no players ruled out

The injury report has 2 starters listed as questionable

No players were ruled out due to injury for the Cleveland Browns in Week 11. That’s the good news from the team’s final injury report of the week, following Friday’s practice session in Berea.

Two players, right guard Wyatt Teller and linebacker Mack Wilson, are designated questionable for Sunday’s matchup at FirstEnergy Stadium against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles. Both Teller and Wilson were limited participants on Friday. Teller is still nursing a calf strain while Wilson continues to be limited with a hip injury. Both played in Week 10.

The injury list is different than the reserve/COVID-19 list, however. And that list remains populated with several useful Browns. Most notable is Myles Garrett, who will not play on Sunday after being placed on the list on Friday.

Right tackle Jack Conklin and kicker Cody Parkey are both still on the list. If they test negative for COVID-19 again before Sunday, Conklin and Parkey can be activated in time to play against the Eagles.

4 reasons why the Browns will beat the Eagles in Week 11

4 reasons why the Cleveland Browns will beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11

The 6-3 Cleveland Browns host the 3-5-1 Philadelphia Eagles in a Week 11 game that’s an important opportunity for the Browns to stick in the crowded AFC playoff race.

Cleveland comes in off a blustery 10-7 win over the Houston Texans in a subtropical depression at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Eagles lost to the New York Giants, 27-17, blowing a golden opportunity to run away and hide with the lowly NFC East title.

The Browns are favored to win at home. And they should feel good about their chances to come up victorious, even with the unfortunate late-breaking news that Myles Garrett will miss the game due to COVID-19.

Browns will still allow fans to attend Week 11 game vs. Eagles

Browns will still allow fans in attendance for Week 11 despite stay-at-home advisories for Northeast Ohio

The COVID-19 pandemic is raging throughout the country and has even breached the Cleveland Browns roster. Yet with renewed regulations and tougher restrictions being enacted in Ohio to try to combat the spread of the coronavirus, the Browns will still permit fans to attend Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the City of Cleveland have both issued stay-at-home advisories for residents that run through mid-December. However, the Browns remain confident in their seating and attendance protocols, which were approved by those same bodies earlier this year.

The Browns allow up to 12,000 fans into FirstEnergy Stadium. All the available seats were filled in the Week 10 win over the Texans despite inclement weather.

Odds watch: Browns open as 3.5-point favorites over the Eagles

The Browns have twice as many wins as the Eagles

[jwplayer n73ie9r3-ThvAeFxT]

The Philadelphia Eagles are in first place in the NFC East, while the Cleveland Browns are in third place in the AFC North. Yet the Browns are clear favorites over the Eagles for the teams’ Week 11 matchup at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Cleveland opened as 3.5-point favorites at BetMGM, a line that carries steadily across most sportsbooks. That’s a reflection of the team’s records and not the divisional standings. The Browns are 6-3 while the Eagles are 3-5-1.

The bookmakers see this being a low-scoring game, as has been the case with the last two games at FirstEnergy Stadium. The over/under is set at 47.5. Weather could be a factor yet again in Cleveland, helping keep the total down.
