(Old) Course history: Revisiting the 2015 British Open leaderboard at St. Andrews with 2022 betting odds

This week’s field of 156 players features 33 who made the cut the last time the Open was held at St. Andrews.

This week the home of golf is playing host to a milestone major.

The world’s best players are bound for the Old Course at St. Andrews for the 150th playing of the Open Championship, the final men’s major of the year. This year’s Open is the 30th to be played at the Old Course and the first time since 2015, when Zach Johnson won a four-hole playoff against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman.

The field of 156 players features 33 who made the cut the last time the Open was held at St. Andrews. If you’re looking to place a wager or two this week, this might be a good place to start.

2022 Mexico Open at Vidanta odds, field, best bets and PGA Tour picks

The PGA Tour is in Mexico for the Mexico Open at Vidanta and we have odds, best bets, and expert picks for you.

The Mexico Open at Vidanata was added to the PGA Tour schedule in January, and Vidanta Vallarta will play host for the next three years.

After a run of great golf and strong fields, this week lacks in the latter. Jon Rahm, who will be making his first start since the Masters, enters as the betting favorite at +450 and is the only player inside the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking.

The highest ranked player behind the Spaniard is Abraham Ancer, No. 20 in the world, who hopes to win in his home country.

There should be some nice value to take advantage of this week, so let’s get into it.

Golf course

Vidanta Vallarta | Par 71 | 7,456 yards

Key statistics

Driving distance: The landing areas off the tee around this track are quite generous, and with the lack of rough, the field should be able to fire away with the big stick.

Strokes Gained: Approach: At a new course, might as well bank on the guys striking it well right now.

2022 Zurich Classic odds, field, best bets and PGA Tour picks

Check out the odds, picks and best bets for the PGA Tour’s 2022 Zurich Classic.

Like the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, the annual trip to New Orleans is a great change of pace. The PGA Tour is headed to TPC Louisiana for the Zurich Classic, a team event where the format of play rotates between best ball and alternate shot.

Rounds 1 and 3: Best ball
Rounds 2 and 4: Alternate shot

The pair of Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman enter as the defending champions, while the betting favorites are Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa (+600).

Ryan Palmer has a new partner this time around after playing with Jon Rahm for the past few seasons (and Jordan Spieth before him). Palmer was able to grab World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Must be nice.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open odds, picks, PGA Tour predictions

Defending champion Carlos Ortiz will be in the field, as will stars such as Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau.

Coming off of Viktor Hovland’s win at Mayakoba, the PGA Tour heads to Texas for the 2021 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open.

Defending champion Carlos Ortiz will be in the field, as will stars such as Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau. Below, we look at the 2021 Houston Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

It’s not the strongest field of the year but there are still plenty of recognizable names teeing it up in Houston this week. Sam Burns is the betting favorite and is 14th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, while 23rd-ranked Scottie Scheffler is also in the field. Koepka, Burns, Finau and Tyrell Hatton are the only players in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking who will be playing this week.

The Houston Open will be played at Memorial Park Golf Course, which plays as a par 70 at 7,412 yards. It’s not a track that demands tremendous length, but it does require good ball-striking on approach to the green. Ortiz set the 72-hole scoring record last year with a total of 267 after the four rounds.

2021 Houston Open picks – Favorite

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Talor Gooch (+3000)

Gooch finished fourth at the Houston Open last year after firing a final-round 63 to pull within four shots of the eventual champion Ortiz. He’s in excellent form coming into this week, too, finishing in the top 11 in all four events so far this season.

He’s not great off the tee, hitting just 57.59 percent of his fairways, but he ranks sixth on tour in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green and sixth in SG: Around-the-Green, so he more than makes up for his struggles with the driver. He’s an excellent value at +3000.

2021 Houston Open picks – Contender

Harold Varner III (+7000)

Varner missed the cut at the World Wide Technology Championship this past week but had three top-35 finishes, including two top-16 finishes, in the three events prior. Varner’s final-round 65 helped him tie for 15th at the Houston Open last year as he climbed 13 spots Sunday.

He’s often overlooked as a mid-tier contender but this could be the week that he puts it all together and claims his first PGA Tour win.

PLAY: Free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

2021 Houston Open picks – Long shot

C.T. Pan (+10000)

Pan has tapered off after a strong start at the Fortinet Championship and Sanderson Farms, finishing T-57 and T-45 in his last two starts. He wasn’t helped by an opening-round 76 at the Zozo and a final-round 72 at the WWTC last week, so it’s more a matter of staying consistent because he can go low. His ball-striking from the fairway will give him a chance in Houston.

2021 CJ Cup odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

Feeling lucky this week?

The PGA Tour will stay in Las Vegas for a second consecutive event after Sungjae Im claimed the title at the Shriners Children’s Open last week. The CJ Cup will be held at The Summit Club in Las Vegas, with the first round of this no-cut event getting underway Thursday. Below, we look at the 2021 CJ Cup odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

The limited field at the CJ Cup is strong this year, with many of the top 50 players in the world attending the event. Dustin Johnson is the favorite, but he’ll have to contend with the likes of Justin Thomas, Viktor Hovland and Louis Oosthuizen, who is fifth in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele is also in the field in Vegas, as is 2020 CJ Cup champion Jason Kokrak.

The Summit Club will host this event for the first time. It’s a par 72 course that plays at 7,431 yards, a layout designed by Tom Fazio. Thomas has won the CJ Cup two of the last three years that it was held in South Korea, but it’ll be played on American soil again this week.

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 3:35 p.m. ET.

Favorite

Viktor Hovland (+3000)

Collin Morikawa (+1500) would be a good choice, too, considering he’s a member of The Summit Club, but I like the way Hovland is playing coming into this week and he’s a good value at +3000. He’s first in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and fourth in SG: Approach early in the 2021-22 season, once again proving to be one of the best ball-strikers in the world.

He does need to improve around the greens. He began to get better in that area last season, but he’s going to hit a ton of fairways and get a lot of looks at birdies. If the putter gets hot this week, he’ll have a chance to contend on Sunday. He finished T-44 at TPC Summerlin last week and will try to build on that performance.

Contender

Marc Leishman (+5000)

No one has started as hot as Leishman this season, going T-4 at the Fortinet Championship and T-3 at the Shriners last week. He’s putting better than just about anyone, ranking second in SG: Putting through two events.

There will be birdies to be found out there this week and Leishman is plenty long enough to get some short irons in his hands where he can be aggressive in his approaches. He’s 19th in SG: Approach after two weeks. At +5000, he’s a worthwhile bet as he tries to ride this hot streak.

Long shot

Tom Hoge (+20000)

Hoge bounced back from a missed cut at the Sanderson Farms Championship two weeks ago by finishing T-14 last week with three sub-70 rounds. He finished T-38 in his first appearance in this event last year. He’s not terribly long or accurate off the tee, but he’s gaining 1.00 strokes per round on approach to the green, which is 12th on Tour this season.

After missing a ton of cuts from April to August last season, he finished strong with a T-4 at The Northern Trust and T-49 at the BMW Championship in late August.

Tour Championship odds, expert picks and predictions for the PGA Tour’s final event of the year

Feeling lucky this week?

The 2020-21 PGA Tour season ends with this week’s Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. A field made up of the top 30 golfers in the season-long FedEx Cup standings will now compete for the $15 million first-place prize. Below, we look at the 2021 Tour Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

The Tour Championship begins with starting strokes assigned by the FedEx Cup standings following Patrick Cantlay‘s win at least week’s BMW Championship. Cantlay enters the week atop the standings with Tony Finau, winner of the previous week’s the Northern Trust, in second.

Cantlay will tee off Thursday at 10-under par with a two-stroke lead over Finau. Places three through five will start at 7 under, 6 under and 5 under, respectively. Spots six through 10 start at 4 under, 11-15 at 3 under, 16-20 at 2 under, 21-25 at 1 under and 26-30 will begin at even par. The odds and our picks include these starting strokes.

Favorite

Jon Rahm (+380)

Rahm will begin the week four shots off the lead at 6 under but that’ll be manageable for the Tour leader in total strokes gained per round on the field. His 2.57 strokes gained per round are a half shot per round better than Cantlay and 0.59 better than Bryson DeChambeau.

The Spaniard slipped from second to fourth in the season-long standings with a T-9 finish last week. It was his sixth straight international top-10 finish, excluding his forced withdrawal from the Memorial Tournament. He remains No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin ranking and the Official World Golf Ranking.

Rahm finished fourth at East Lake last year at minus-17, including starting strokes. It was an awful putting performance, but he has averaged 0.33 strokes gained per round with the flat stick this season.

Contender

Tony Finau (+700)

Finau’s a much better bet at odds nearly double those of Rahm and two strokes closer to the pre-tournament leader. He’s 17th in the Golfweek/Sagarin ranking but ninth in the Official World Golf Ranking following his win at the Northern Trust and a T-15 finish last week.

He’s tied for 10th in this field with 16 career rounds played at East Lake and has averaged 2.06 strokes gained on the field per round at this venue to rank tenth among the 30 golfers in attendance. He has just one win this season (and since 2016), but he has three runner-up finishes and three other top-10 showings in 21 events in 2021.

He needs to make up just two strokes over four rounds to force his third playoff of the year.

Long shot

Rory McIlroy (+2000)

It has proven risky to bet outside of the FedEx Cup leaders since the starting strokes format was introduced in 2019; however, McIlroy, who starts at 16th in the standings at 2 under, is worth a small-unit flier for a 20-1 return on your investment.

The two-time FedEx Cup winner has averaged 2.91 strokes gained on the field per round over 28 rounds at East Lake GC. After bemoaning the labors of the 2020-21 PGA Tour “super” season, McIlroy finished alone in fourth last week for his top North American finish since winning the Wells Fargo Championship in early May.

2021 BMW Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

Feeling lucky this week? Keep an eye on these bets for the BMW Championship.

The top 70 golfers in the season-long FedEx Cup standings following Tony Finau‘s win at the Northern Trust move on to Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland for the BMW Championship. Finau moved to No. 1 in the standings with his first win in more than five years. Below, we look at the 2021 BMW Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Caves Valley Golf Club is a new venue for the penultimate event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The Tom Fazio design measures 7,542 yards and plays to a par of 72. Jon Rahm, who remains atop the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, won this event last year but at Olympia Fields Country Club.

The top 30 in the standings after this week will advance to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club for the playoff finale. Some big names beginning this week outside of the top 30 include Kevin Kisner (31), Keegan Bradley (32), Sergio Garcia (44), Webb Simpson (52), Paul Casey (54) and Phil Mickelson (70).

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 4:40 p.m. ET.

Favorite

Bryson DeChambeau (+2000)

DeChambeau was the first two-time winner on the 2020-21 PGA Tour season but he has no victories and just three top-10 finishes in his last 13 events. He’s coming off a lackluster T-31 finish last week and enters the second-to-last event of the season ninth in the FedEx Cup standings.

Despite his recent (relative) struggles, and media silence, DeChambeau still leads all qualified golfers and players in this field with 1.14 Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee per round. The length and wide landing areas of Caves Valley are well-suited to his game and he recently tied for eighth at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational while gaining 0.85 strokes per round with the putter.

[vertical-gallery id=778067171]

Contender

Sam Burns (+5000)

Burns broke out in early May with his first career PGA Tour win at the Valspar Championship and followed it up with a runner-up finish two weeks later at the AT&T Byron Nelson. He returned to the front page of the leaderboard at the WGC-Invitational event with a T-2 finish before tying for 21st last week.

He comes into the BMW Championship 12th in the season-long standings but shares just the 24th-best odds to win. He’s averaging 0.67 SG: Approach and 0.52 SG: Putting for the season on top of 0.27 SG: Off-the-Tee per round.

[listicle id=778130090]

Long shot

Sergio Garcia (+9000)

The 41-year-old former Masters champ has struggled with the putter all season and missed the cut last week but Caves Valley sets up as a strong course fit. He trails only DeChambeau and Rahm among qualified golfers in SG: Off-the-Tee.

He should also be highly motivated this week while in need of a strong finish in order to advance to the Tour Championship. He begins the week at No. 44 in the season-long standings with his only win of the 2020-21 campaign coming at the Sanderson Farms Championship last fall.

2021 John Deere Classic odds, predictions and PGA Tour picks

Feeling lucky this week? These are the bets to keep an eye on.

TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, hosts this week’s John Deere Classic as the last tune-up to the 2021 British Open next week. A rather weak field is in attendance ahead of the final men’s major championship of the 2020-21 PGA Tour super season. Below, we look at the 2021 John Deere Classic odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Brian Harman is the top player in the field at No. 8 in the Golfweek/Sagarin ranking. Daniel Berger, at No. 9, is the only other golfer from the top 10 in attendance. Cam Davis comes in off his first career PGA Tour victory at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

TPC Deere Run measures 7,268 yards and plays to a par of 71. Five of the last six winning scores of the John Deere Classic were minus-20 or better. The 2020 tournament was canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Favorite

Russell Henley (+1800)

Henley was off last week after a T-19 finish at the Travelers Championship followed by his T-13 showing at the US Open. He returns to TPC Deere Run off of a runner-up finish in 2019 in which he averaged 2.11 Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and 1.93 SG: Approach per round.

Henley’s 46th on Tour in driving accuracy and tied for 14th in par 4 efficiency from 400-450 yards. His most recent of three PGA Tour wins to date was at the 2017 Houston Open, but he enters the week in strong form and is one of the top-ranked players in the field at No. 34 in the Golfweek rankings.

The weaker field should allow for a top finish after his late collapse against the world’s best at the U.S. Open.

Contender

Beau Hossler (+6600)

Hossler has rung up three straight top-25 finishes with a T-19 at the Palmetto Championship, a T-10 at the Travelers Championship and a T-25 at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. Once ranked as high as 64th in the Official World Golf Ranking, he enters this week at No. 288 but has been trending in the right direction in 2021.

He tied for 26th at the 2019 John Deere Classic with 1.48 SG: Putting per round. His putter has been the best part of his game this season.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Long shot

Bronson Burgoon (+12500)

Burgoon has averaged 0.85 strokes gained on the field per round over 12 career rounds at TPC Deere Run. Those three appearances include a distant runner-up finish to Michael Kim in 2018. He tied with three others that year, including 2018 Open champ Francesco Molinari.

The 34-year-old has missed three straight cuts, but he previously tied for 13th against quality fields at both the AT&T Byron Nelson and the Valspar Championship.

His two professional wins were on the Adams Pro Tour in 2012, but he has played well at this course and this is one of the weakest fields of the 2021 schedule.

Rocket Mortgage Classic predictions, odds and PGA Tour picks

Feeling lucky this week? We’ve got some picks.

The PGA Tour returns to Detroit Golf Club as it hosts the third running of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Bryson DeChambeau returns as the defending champion and 2021 betting favorite. Below, we look at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Detroit Golf Club measures 7,370 yards and plays to a par of 72. The Donald Ross design puts an emphasis on accuracy off the tee on the front nine, but the back nine is considerably more open and allows for plenty of scoring opportunities.

The two previous events have seen rather different fields and leaderboards. The inaugural 2019 tournament was won by Nate Lashley with Doc Redman as the runner-up. Last year’s edition was one of the Tour’s first events back from the COVID-19 pandemic with DeChambeau winning over Matthew Wolff.

Will Zalatoris (+2500)

Zalatoris, 24, is 15th in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings but remains in need of a win for full PGA Tour status and eligibility for the FedExCup Playoffs.

His missed cut at the U.S. Open was just his second through 15 events in 2021. That and a prior missed cut at the Wells Fargo Championship, have boosted his odds for this week. He’s third in this field by the Golfweek rankings but shares the fifth-best odds to win as a quality value play.

Zalatoris has a runner-up finish at the Masters and three other top-10 finishes on the year, including a T-8 at the PGA Championship. He’s still averaging 1.51 Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and 1.00 SG: Approach per round for the 2020-21 season.

Contender

Doc Redman (+5500)

Redman has fallen to No. 131 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) with six missed cuts through 15 events this year, but he tied for second against a weaker field at the Palmetto Championship and for 61st at last week’s Travelers Championship.

Course history is on his side with his runner-up finish in 2019 and a T-21 in the stronger field last year.

His approach game has been sharp this season, and he has been better with the putter of late. He also averaged 1.23 SG: Around-the-Green per round at the Palmetto as a considerable improvement on the weakest part of his game.

Long shot

Mackenzie Hughes (+15000)

Hughes tied for 76th last week following his Sunday collapse and T-15 finish at the U.S. Open. He lost a woeful 0.84 strokes per round off the tee last week; however, he remained strong around the greens and has been one of the Tour’s most consistent putters this season.

He didn’t play this event last year after a T-21 finish in 2019. He averaged 1.26 SG: Tee-to-Green and 0.84 SG: Approach per round in that appearance.

Mainly, this number is far too high for someone who was recently in the top 50 of the OWGR and has begun showing signs of old form after a stretch of five straight missed cuts.

Travelers Championship 2021 odds, predictions and PGA Tour picks

Feeling lucky this week?

The Travelers Championship returns to its usual spot on the PGA Tour schedule in 2021 as the follow-up event to the U.S. Open. A strong field is bound for TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. Below, we look at the 2021 Travelers Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Dustin Johnson returns as the defending champion from last summer. He’s the top-ranked player in the field at No. 5 in the Golfweek/Sagarin world ranking and recently tied for 19th at the U.S. Open.

Bryson DeChambeau is this week’s betting favorite at +1100 off of a disappointing T-26 finish in his defense of the U.S. Open. He shot an 8-over 44 on the back nine in Sunday’s final round, including a quadruple bogey on No. 17.

Favorite

Scottie Scheffler (+2800)

Scheffler missed the cut in his first appearance at the Travelers last year  despite averaging 1.34 Strokes Gained: Putting per round. He’s tied with Rahm for first on Tour in total driving this season and is coming off a strong T-7 finish last week.

He led last week’s field with 2.12 SG: Putting per round. For the 2020-21 season, he’s averaging 1.05 SG: Tee-to-Green and 1.42 total strokes gained on the field per round. He’s a quality fit for the course with TPC River Highland’s emphasis on accuracy off the tee and with a hot flat stick.

Contender

Bubba Watson (+5400)

Watson is looking for his fourth Travelers Championship title with his most-recent win coming by three strokes in 2018. He tied for 50th at Torrey Pines last week while playing 11 over on Saturday and Sunday.

He still averaged 0.52 SG: Off-the-Tee per round but struggled with his approach game. His missed cut at TPC River Highlands last summer was largely due to a woeful putting performance, but he was much closer to neutral with the flat stick last week.

Watson’s 50 career rounds played at this venue rank fourth in the field, and his 1.66 strokes gained per round are the fifth-most among those with at least 10 rounds played. He’s averaging 0.80 SG: Off-the-Tee and 0.97 SG: Tee-to-Green per round for the season.

Long shot

Guido Migliozzi (+10000)

Migliozzi tied for fourth at last week’s U.S. Open and will now play the first non-major PGA Tour event of his career. He enters the week at No. 72 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He won twice on the European Tour in 2019 and had back-to-back runner-up finishes before arriving in the U.S.

The 24-year-old Italian was sixth in the field last week with 2.83 SG: Tee-to-Green per round, and he was fourth among those who made the cut in SG: Around-the-Green.

Get him at this value price while you can, because they won’t last long if he’s going to play more regularly on the PGA Tour.
